Police: Retired Cop Accidentally Kills Teen Grocer
NEW YORK -- A Queens grocery store clerk was killed when a retired police detective's pistol fell from his waistband and fired, police said.
New York City police said 18-year-old Manuel Chamelta was hit in the chest by the bullet as he stood behind the counter of the Astoria Food Mart at 11:50 p.m. Monday.
Chamelta, who came here from Mexico two years ago, died at Elmhurst Hospital Center.
Reports identify the retired detective as John Malik, who told investigators it was a freak accident.
Malik said he was reaching for his pager, which had gone off, when his gun fell off his hip and discharged. Malik called 911.
Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said the case is under investigation.
