I think a person who ends up homeless would think twice about being homeless if shelters were taken away so they wouldn't have a place to stay cause there are too many lazy homeless people at homeless shelters. Whenever i go to liquor stores & corner stores in the ghetto for my cigarette merchandiser job, it sickens me that there's always a bunch of black men standing in front of the liquor store talkin to each other about nothin & it makes customers scared to go into the store when they see that. The owners of the stores are obviously too scared to tell these people to get away from their store. I think people who are homeless have a mental problem or they're just lazy & don't wanna work. I don't see how anybody would wanna be broke & not have any money, food, a place of their own, clothes, shoes. I think homeless shelters need to stop serving homeless people food & giving them a place to sleep. If this was to stop, it would make homeless people get out there & bust their ass to get a job.

That's a little harsh, Isiah. While there are a number of people who may be taking advantage of the shelters when with a little determination and work they could be making a life for themselves, there also are people who through no fault of their own have found themselves out on the street and need the shelter until they get back on their feet again.

I'm sorry but this is the most ignorant post I have ever read in my life. Do you think it was by choice for them to be homeless? It's not as black and white as you make it sound. There's so many reasons why people can be homeless.

It's not easy for homeless people to get jobs either, no one wants to give them a job because they have no fixed address, and don't have the money to buy clothes for interviews and things like that.

you're overgeneralizing them. it's not their fault some of them ended up homeless, and no one's gonna hire anyone like that for a job anyway.

Okay, Isiah, it is pretty clear to me that the logical people in here are not going to change your mind, so I should probably not waste my time. And I'm not trying to call you "illogical," but man... you are way off base about the homeless.

For starters, the majority of the homeless are severely mentally ill or have serious drug and alcoholic addictions that prevent them from "getting off their asses" and finding means to support themselves. It's not as easy as you paint it out to be. You think people really want to be homeless? Absolutely not. It's a horrible, vicious way to live.

I hope I do not need to go in detail as to why the mentally ill and addicted homeless people are unable to lift themselves out of their situation. You should already know by now a few things about such problems, and realize it is almost impossible to help themselves. Now, about those who are homeless without mental issues: it is still very very difficult for them to change their situation too. Like it has already been said, work for them is not easy to find. What place is really going to want to offer a position to such a person when there are many other applicants who are not homeless and are regarded as "better" than those homeless who do apply? Being homeless is a huge stigma and no one wants to get near it.

And forget about your disscusion of shelter's making it easy for them to avoid getting off the streets. Spend a while in a shelter. They are hell on earth--people get mugged, beat up or even worse in those places. And besides, homeless people do not have those shelters 24 hours a day, which is probably why you see these homeless people ON THE STREETS so often. That's where they spend most of their lives.

Also forget about saying that they should have never gotten homeless in the first place. Sometimes extraordinary things occur in life that people have no control over. Some have no family or good friends, and once they lose their original job and are unable to find work, they find themselves without a home, without money to support themselves in any way, and boom--they end up on the streets! Some are runaway kids who choose the streets over being abused at home. Whatever the reason for non mentally ill people to be homeless, there is always a reason, and no one really wants that life for themselves. But you should note that "laziness" is certainly not a good way to describe the problem.

Well said Kat, plus shelters only allow you to stay for so long, a few days maximum, so shelters really don't do much.

I think you need to have compassion for some of these homeless
people because some of them cannot help their circumstances.

You know it is possible to not be able to find work, it's not always that they are "too lazy" :o

I work at a Pet Store and day after day we have this one Homeless man come in and talk with one of our birds and cuddle it and mingle with us. The other day he started talking with us and said that an owner of another Pet Shop down the street offered him a job AND a place to stay until he could make enough money to get a place of his own! He was so excited, but was more so skeptical on why the man had even offered it to him. So he said he asked and the man told him, "I was homeless once too. Someone helped me... and look at me now. You could do the same."

Sometimes all people need is a helping hand.

Sometimes all people need is a helping hand. That is a very nice story. That's how I feel about the homeless--they can't very well pull themselves out of their situation unless they are offered help from others. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to happen often.
