From the IMDB:

Director Bryan Singer has finally ended his quest to find an aspiring star capable of transporting Superman into the 21st century - he's settled on little known actor Brandon Routh. X-Men film-maker Singer signed up to direct Superman Returns in the summer and announced he was searching for an unknown actor to fill the Man of Steel's red boots - a role made famous by the late Christopher Reeve. And he deems 18-year-old Routh - whose resume is limited to a number of appearances in TV shows like Will & Grace - the perfect choice to reprise the comic book role, according to Britain's The Sun newspaper. Meanwhile, The OC star Mischa Barton and Topher Grace from That '70s Show are also reportedly in negotiations to play Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen respectively.

So, let me get this straight, Jimmy Olsen will be older than Superman?

there was only one bigscreen Superman, and he is dead now.

Why revive the film franchise when it crashed and burned with "The Quest For Peace"? Let the Reeve movies stand on their own and not try to do it again, it's not like how the various tv shows cover different aspects of him, like his love-life (Lois And Clark) or his early years (Smallville). Let the four Reeve movies be the only Superman movies.

The thing that bothers me the most about this new Superman flick is that there is a perfectly good Superman TV show on right now that deserves to be spun off into a movie when the show runs its course. "Smallvile" is a great series, and it's a slap in the face to the cast and the creators of that show that Warner Brothers wants to ignore them and crank out another summer comic book blockbuster.

According to a report on IESB Singer & Spacey may be reteaming for Superman.

The role of Lex Luthor won't go to an unknown, at least not according to Kevin Smith on a recent interview with the NY Post and other reliable sources. Kevin Spacey is Bryan Singers number one choice to become Superman's arch nemesis.

Bryan Singer and Kevin Spacey have been friends ever since the pairing up in the breakout hit The Usual Suspects. Official announcements should be forth coming from Warner Bros. in the next few days.

Here's a bit of news that's not really official or confirmed yet that was posted over at superherohype.com and http://www.supermanhomepage.com

October 18, 2004: Casting Decision Close on Lois Lane
The casting of Lois Lane for the up-coming Superman movie is by no means finalized. Another report released today by JoBlo.com http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=5582 states...

Our source, who requested anonymity, claims that director Bryan Singer has whittled the casting down to four candidates and at the top of that pack is Evangeline Lilly, who has been in auditions for the part for the past few weeks. The name might not ring a bell immediately (it didn't for me) but then our scooper told me she's the star of ABC's current hit series "Lost". Lilly stars as Kate, the mysterious and sexy former criminal stuck on the island. The 25-year-old actress started as a Ford model and sequed into acting, though "Lost" has been her only major part. Our scooper also says that the other three actresses up for the part of Lois Lane are "name" actresses with the current debate being whether to cast the unknown (Lilly) or a more recognizable actress to offset the newcomer Brandon Routh as Superman. Singer reportedly wanted to cast two relative unknowns as Superman and Lois but hasn't made a final decision yet.

(ugh I don't think so, she doesn't have that Lois Lane look, IMO they should cast Elizabeth Durance as Lois in the movie too)

I agree with you to an extent but the creators of Smallville have messed up Superman history so badly that IMO a spinoff movie wouldn't work cause of the damage they've done to Superman's history :(

Aw, c'mon, they haven't ruined Superman. I think they've done a great job of reinventing and updating the story.

I'm not too thrilled they brought Lois Lane into the mix this season, but other than that, it's been a great interpretation of Superman.

Don't get me wrong, I love Smallville, but even Smallville fans are saying they've messed up Superman history. Since when is Metropolis in Kansas? ;)

This is a great interpretation you are right, Tom Welling is great as Clark and someday he would be a great Superman if he ever wanted to do it :)

Superman-V.com has finally updated:

quote:12-31-2004 -KATE BOSWORTH IS LOIS LANE + CAST/SUIT RUMOURS

After several screentests WB look like they have found their Lois Lane. Reliable sources inform us that Kate Bosworth has won the role of Daily Planet's feisty yet incident prone reporter. After many young actresses screentested alongside Bradon Routh - with Elisha Cuthbert, Claire Danes and Keri Russell all believed to have come close it was Bosworth who Singer decided on. Kate who recently starred in Beyond The Sea now joins an impressive looking cast believed to be Shaun Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen, Spacey as Lex Luthor and Brandon Routh as Superman.

Kate is an excellent choice for Lois and our mock up gives you a glimpse of what she could look like as Miss Lane.

We have heard rumours of a cast get together in January and a possible photo shoot to go with an announcement of the full cast but take that with a pinch of supersalt. There have also been some more mumurings ofJude Law joining the cast with General Zod and John 'Metallo' Corben mentioned as possible roles. Again take a rather large pinch on that one.

Some suit details are also leaking through - expect to see some more darker colours for the costume and a 3D Superman symbol. S-V have created a visualisation of a modernised Superman costume - click here to check it out.

Apologies for the lack of updates recently. Have no fear S-V should be back up and running as normal for the new year. Have a good one!

Oh and one more thing. Keep your eye on Bluetights for something supercool happening supersoon! =)

I'm boycotting the new Superman movie.

Smallville should have been spun off into the new Superman movie franchise.

Understandable, but Tom says he doesn't want to be Superman. And the producers of the movie don't want to do Smallville the Movie, they basically want a continuation of the Superman movies

A stupid move on both parts. Like it or not, Tom Welling will always be remembered as playing Clark Kent, the young Superman.
I just wish they would carry the show over into a movie. The series is laying some incredible groundwork for a feature film spinoff.

That's very true.

I guess what the producer said was if you go into this movie with knowing Chris as Superman then that's your point of reference, if you go into this movie knowing Tom as Clark, then that's your point of reference.

So far what I've read is the movie is called "Superman Returns" it's basically ignoring what happened in Superman 3 and 4 it's kinda like a sequel to Superman 2 is what I'm reading. That's what they're basing it on.

I did read that Tom did audition for the movie, but then decided he didn't want to do it. :(

Kate Bosworth? Eh.

Wasn't she in two of the most horrible films of all-time? (Blue Crush and The Rules of Attraction)

Mischa Barton as Lois Lane? I'm not a fan of them redoing the movie as it is, but COME ON, Mischa Barton as LOIS LANE?! First of all, this cast is SO YOUNG. Mischa Barton does not give the impression of someone who would fit into the fast-paced newspaper world. I love the OC and she drives me crazy in that role as it is. The thought of her playing Lois Lane kinda reminds me of a 3 year old playing dress up in their mother's clothes.

I like that. Good observation.

Filling the cast with Hollywood's young "Flavors of the month" will not do the film any good.

 Great way to put it.I really dont think she's a strong enough actress for the role.I dont think she's a very good actress at all.
