Is it funny when Sitcoms making fun of their own show?

for example:Sanford & Son
Fred:Instead of calling it Steinburg & Son,why don't you make the show black and call it Sanford & Son

Producer:It would never make it

NewsRadio's third season finale was a special episode. It was hosted by Phil Hartman and it was about the news crew in outer space. Anyways when Phil Hartman was talking to us he said "For the six of you still watching ..." The show was low rated then, obviously.

Boy Meets World kind of did in a season five episode. Eric got cast in a show that was exactly like Boy Meets World, "Kid Gets Aquainted with the Universe".

"Sienfeld" made a few references to the show, most notably when George and Jerry started to develop their sitcom, which was "a show about nothing."

LOL yeah that is a good episode titled "Eric Hollywood" also in that whole episode is a parody of the whole show, even when Eric got a part on "Kid gets acquainted with the Universe" and the actors names were "Ben Sandwich(ben savage) and they mentioned his brother "Bread Sandwich"(fred savage), "Schneider Strong"(rider strong)

That's So Raven in the season 2 episode "He's Got The Power", when Eddie gets physic powers and a girl suggests that he gets his own tv show, Raven says "That's ridiculous! Who'd watch a show about a teen physic?"

Well, "Frasier" made fun of the show it was spun off from, with Diane's stage play about Cheers. Does that count?

Not really, because both Diane and Frasier knew that is was about their life at Cheers, not necessarily the show.

dont forget when Laurie Metcalf guested in the last season and said "do you know what it's like to play the same character for 20 years?", lol. Which was a reference to Kelsey.

not a sitcom, but on Queer As Folk, there was a show-within-a-show called "Gay As Blazes" that Emmett became obsessed with watching.

Just the Ten of Us "made fun" of their show several times.

In an ep. of "The Nanny," Maxwell hires a child actor from a sitcom called "Royal Flush" which was basicallly a parody of "The Nanny." Fran even comments while watching it, "How can she afford to dress like that on her salary?" Basically poking fun at Fran's own wardrobe.

On a sixth season episode of Roseanne where Dan in hanging out with Mark's friends, at the end of the episode, they show a shot from the pilot of Roseanne, only in Spanish and Dan says something like "That reminds me so much of my wife."

There was an episode of Roseanne when Tony Geary and Genie Francis(from General Hospital) guest starred as their characters on GH Luke and Laura, and they talked about how their son changed(a new actor took over the role), and Roseanne talked about how she doesn't recognize her daughter(I think that was when they were rotating between Lacey and Sarah.

That was funny!

not a sitcom, but in the last season of Buffy, there was a running gag about how each week the Summers' house would be trashed and the next week it'd look normal again, so they had Xander move in as a live-in carpenter because the house keep getting destroyed every week by attacks, lol.

In Whos the Boss?, in the episode "Sit Down and Be Counted" there was a commerical for a show airing on ABC with "Hank the Housekeeper" and it showed a preview of an episode simular to a WTB? episode..and it played the theme song, too

I believe the Late Show with David Letterman has made fun of itself, especially when it was (and still is today?) behind not only Jay, but also Conan.

I know the Late Show made fun of CBS while the "eye network" was having hard times.

I think The Simpsons have been making fun of their own show since the second season.

In the last episode of Boy Meets World, "Brave New World" (Part 2) - Cory actually mentions the title of the show "Boy Meets World- Now I get it."

Also, Charles in Charge referenced Scott Baio's connections with Happy Days at least twice. In one episode, Justin Whalin's character (Charles' nephew- sorry, can't remember the name) says "Wa, Wa Wa!" when meeting a pretty woman just the way Chachi used to say on Happy Days. In fact, when Charles repeats the "Wa Wa Wa?" phrase questioningly, his nephew says that Chachi on Happy Days used to say it all the time. Charles informs him that Chachi was a dork.

On another episode of Charles in Charge (the 100th. episode, "It's a Blunderful Life") Donny Most guest stars on the episode. (And of course, Donny Most portrayed Ralph Malph on Happy Days!) Donny Most plays a guy who wins the lottery and says "It looks like Happy Days are here again". Of course, since he bought the winning lottery ticket that Charles wouldn't let Mr. Powell buy, Charles then replies, "It looks like Happy Days just got cancelled."

Of course, there's many examples that could be named. There's been plenty of sitcoms that have made a joke about the setup for their own show and commented that nobody would watch it. I'm pretty sure this has been done on cartoons too.

In fact, there's an episode of Saved By the Bell called "No Hope With Dope" where Brandon Tartikoff (then head of NBC) guest stars on the show and mentions to the gang that a show about a high school principal and the kids that go to his school could be made for NBC. Everyone looks real hopeful, but then Brandon says, "Nah. It would never work." and everyone gets all disappointed. :-)

don't think anyone mentioned it yet, but in South Park's 100th episode (at least the 100th produced episode), "Cancelled", there were a lot of references about a fictional show called "Earth" making 100 episodes, and then talk about how shows usually go downhill once they've hit the 100 point anyways... all the while, this was the 100th episode of South Park (tho it was the 97th aired, Comedy Central thought it was strong enough to be a season premiere)

There was an episode of Will and Grace where Jack wrote a play about two characters ignoring him named Will and Grace.....they died and went to hell for ignoring him....

"Cheers" wasn't, but they did have one meta reference joke in "The Last Picture Show" (where the guys went to the drive-in... and made Frasier ride in the trunk). I think they were watching a Godzilla movie or something, and somebody comments that one of the actresses who was in a lot of them quit at some point. And Woody says something like, "I don't understand. Why would an actress just quit in the middle of a successful series?"

And the studio audience roared.
