5, it was because the black guy who played Officer Smitty starred in a New Prison Comedy called "On the Rocks" that premeired in the fall of 1975 which lasted until May of 1976. And Hal Williams then returns to the Show in season 6.

I never saw on the rocks because it was a short-ived sitcom. It lasted a year and I on;y know about it because i do a lot of reading about TV shows from the 70's. Some people criticized the show because it sent out the message that prison was a fun place to be-lol

BTW: why in the hell was a character created for Hoppy's mother?-lol Never made any sense

Sounds like an interesting show.

I have no idea why Hoppys mother was a character on S&S. I will say this though, I honestly thought it was a man playing hoppys mother, she was ugly

I agree. I also feel that if Hal williams left the show, they should have just gotten rid of the Hoppy character. Especially since they were a team

I don't know why they kept hoppy. I guess the producers thought he was funny or something

To me, hoppy was only funny when he was with Smitty, when Smitty left Hoppy was boring.

I think when Smitty returned in season 6, he was coming to the Sanford home by himself. I don't remember them being together in season 6.

I've only seen a few season 6 episodes and I don't recall seeing Smitty and Hoppy together.

Did they ever make an appearance on the spinoff The Sanford Arms?

Nope, besides Aunter Monster, the other characters from Sanford and Son that appeared on Sanford Arms was Grady and Bubba.

Was Sanford any good? I know Lamont wasn't on the show but you still had Fed and Rollo.

The last time that Smitty and Hoppy appeared together on Sanford and Son was on The Odd Father episode from the 5th season; but Hal Williams did return in the 6th season of Sanford and Son in an episode called, Here Today, Gone Tomorrow...

Yup Rollo was still there and Fred was Wild. I think Sanford was better than the 6th season of Sanford and Son.

What was wrong with the 6th season of S&S? Did the writers just run out of ideas, or did the addition of Lamonts girlfriend and her son kill the show?

My problems with the 6th season

1.Too much Esther
2.No More Julio
3.Not Enough Rollo

In 1977 I guess it couldn't compete with Donnie and Marie and Wonder Woman.

I liked Hoppy when he appeared alone in "Fred Sanford has a Baby". It was really funny when he fainted in Fred's living room.
