I think the 8 year old getting suspended for having a butter knife and 5 year olds getting suspended just for playing w/ imaginary guns is stupid....I mean as long as somone's not hurting or trying to hurt someone wtih a knife, or has a real gun.

Even if he attempted to use it as a weapon, the only way it could really hurt someone would be jabbing it in an eye, which could also be done with a finger or a pencil. They would have to not allow people to take their hands out from their pockets or something to be fair.
PENCILS are much more dangerous, and the school provides those! They must be wacked to think that bringing a piece of plastic to school is worse than what they do.

I dont blame them for taking action, though suspension is a little extreme. But you can thank all the other kids who set off school violence for making society this way. I must be the only one happy they looked into this. Id rather have them take away the knife and notify the mother, than to have them say, 'Oh its just a butter knife for his sandwhich', then the kid goes around trying to stab people with it.

That's like saying, "Well if a kid likes watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, he's gonna end up wanting to kill robots and bad guys for a living." I played with lots of water guns, etc. when I was little. I was just educated enough to know playing with real guys is bad.

The child never should have been suspended. He's just a kid, and he was doing as he was told. With that said, I think any mother who sends her child off to school with any kind of knife is an idiot.

Joking aside, I dont really see a problem with kids playing with toy guns, if they're taught the difference between whats real and what is not. Its over the newspaper all the time about kids who accidentally pull the trigger of a gun and kill either themselves or someone else, when they thought it was a toy.

This world gets more ****ed up by the day.

So very true, but a few people have ruined it for everyone. There are parents out there who aren't teaching their kids the rights and wrong, and what's real and what's not when it comes to guns and weapons. Growing up my sister in law wouldn't let my nephew even point a toy gun at anyone

I can understand schools being cautious, no suspension is not the answer, but at least the school did do something, I know if they hadn't and the kid was playing around and cut or stabbed someone, people would be saying "why didn't the school do anything, don't they care?" :)

Parents need to educate their children very thoroughly on the importance of gun safety. It's vital that they know the difference between real guns and make-believing with toy guns. If they are taught right, it should never be a problem.
