I buy a DVD yesterday and there were 2 discs that wouldn't play so i take it back today so i could get another set. So i come home with a brand new set and still there are two discs that won't play. So should I go back to the store for third time? They will look at me like i'm crazy if i come back again. This is why i hate DVD's they are overrated and i hate buying them. I'm so pissed off right now

Do you see season sets tv series being released on VHS? DVD is the catalyst for all this stuff being released in the first place. There are movies that have made more money from dvd sales than they did at the box office, so I disagree with anyone who thinks dvds are overrated. You can have problems with video cassettes just as easily (if not more often) as you would with dvds.

No one forced you to buy them did they?

It's more than likely your DVD player, have you used the cleaning stuff on it? You do, like with VCR's have to keep them clean too

That's the frustrating thing, either i buy shows on DVD and deal with the aggravation or don't buy them. I wish shows were released on VHS bcause I never have problem with VHS. The problem i'm having today with What's Happening is after the Columbia Tristar Intro is finshed, that's when the menu is supposed to appear on the screen but it's just a black screen after the Columbia Tristar intro is done.

It's not the DAmm DVD player. I already said i'm not having any problems with the 5th season of Sanford and Son. I bought both What's Happening and Sanford and Son at the same time yesterday. So it looks like i will have to get Different Strokes in exchange for What's Happening

TV shows on VHS would cost too much especially for season sets(I know, I bought some tvshow tapes and paid about $25 a piece and they only had two episodes on each tape)

Sounds like you got a bad copy take it back(again) and exchange it, if it still does it, return it for full refund, and go buy it from somewhere else.

My A Team DVD did that, the picture would scramble, it was the DVD, I had to take it back, and it was fine.

It still could be your DVD player. Do you leave it on all the time?

It could be the copy of the DVD you got, it could be any number of things. I would still go out and buy something to clean your DVD player with, then try playing the DVD again and see if that helps

On Disc 1 and 2 of What's Happening, after the columia tristar intro, the screen never goes to the menu for episode selection. Only on the 3rd Disc you see the menu after the CT intro. So all the WH DVD must be like that at Tower Records. So I will have to get another show and it looks like it's going to be Different Strokes

Angela you are not making any sense, for the last time I'm currently watching my Sanford and Son DVD without any problems. So it has to be the DVD not my DVD player. If it was my DVD player then Sanford and Son would be doing the samething.

It could still be the DVD player. A player can play one DVD fine while not being able to play another. I don't know the technical reason for it, but it does happen.

I thought about doing that but i see no point in going to my mom's house to play that particular DVD on her DVD player because I won't be able to watch there if it plays and i'm not going to buy a new DVD player so i can see What's Happening. So the DVD will be returned and i have to buy the DVD at another store

or you could always rent a copy of it, and see if it does it.

I completely agree, although I do sympathize with Solomon's anger (it has happened to me before)

However, anybody who thinks VHS are superior to DVD (in a way other than price).... is just being ignorant.

That might be your problem.
Some DVDs just dont work in some players.

My first player was $50 too, but it broke in about 5 months. I bought a Mintek one for about $80 shortly after and have been fine with it since.

The first DVD Player I had was a piece of crap, the power button wouldn't work on the remote, I exchanged it for another one, and it did the same thing, it was a Magnavox. I returned that one, and got an RCA one at RadioShack, I've had it 3 years now and have had no problems with it. IMO RCA is the best out there.

I have a Memorex DVD player and I've had it since '02. I think it was $100-150 (not sure) and it works just fine....Solomon, I agree with everybody else here, it sounds like it's your DVD player. You have a piece of **** DVD player - get a REAL one. :lol:

Solomon, I read something once, that said some DVD Players have trouble reading certain DVDs, there's just some kind of coding or something that it has trouble with.

Yeah the DVD Player couldn't read Disc 1, and 2 but was able to read Disc 3. That's why i don't rush to buy DVD's anymore when a TV show is released because it's always a problem. Unecessary Aggravation.

I was thinking about getting a new DVD player but i only would use it when a tv show is released which is not that often. I guess i can go up to 80-85 dollars bt i'm defintely not going over a hundred dollars.

Damn that sucks...I've have no problems with my TVDVD's so far, and i brought this cheap $100 dvd player/ surround sound combo around last year....the onlproblems with dvd's have just been the occasional case of a disc not in its place in the packaging, and all the way home you hear the disc rattling wondering if its okay

I always try to find a disc that is in its place, but I have had that happen before.

I'm really starting to prefer DVD's over VHS. I can't even list all the times I've had VHS tape mess up.

the bad thing about DVDs is that in most stores if you open it they wont refund your money even if its defective, usually they give you a new one which you already know about or they may give you store credit, if you ask for a refund they may tell you its your player thats the problem, and you may be in for a fight if u want a refund. Good Luck and i understand your problem i have been thru this.

True, but I had a problem with my A Team DVD, the first time I bought the Season 1 DVD, the 3rd disc wouldn't play, so I exchanged it, and the second set(the third disc) wouldn't play either, so they let me return it and I went and got it somewhere else.

Do you know after i came back home Saturday with the other What's Happening DVD, I still had a problem and had to go back t Tower Records today on my lunch break to return the DVD again. So this time I said I would get another show so i got Different Strokes in exchange for What;s Happening and when i came home from work, I STILL HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE DIFFERENT STROKES DVD-LOL So i had to go back to the store this evening which was my 3rd time in 4 days and this time i DEMANDED a refund because i was not coming back to that store again. DVD"S SUCK

I don't know if it's the dvds at this point. If you keep having the same problem with different dvds, I would think it's the player and not the dvds themselves. If it's happening that often, you can't keep having that much bad luck at finding a set that will play correctly. Maybe you should try a more prominent brand name player than Cyberhome. I never even heard of that until this thread.

It's your DVD Player, go and get you one that's a bit more expensive, I like RCA myself, I haven't had a problem with my RCA DVD player. :)

It's not the DVD Player because SAnford and Son season 5 played fine. I just know not to ever buy a DVD from Tower Records. That is the first tme i ever had a problem with a DVD not playing.

No it's the DVD's in Tower Records, not my DVD Player. Explain this, I accidently left a disc f Sanford and Son on my VCR for 4 months and it was very DUSTY. I wiped off the dust and put it in the DVD and that particular Disc played fine. Now i take a brand new disc out of the Different Strokes case and put it in and nothing happens. So i will say it one more time. IT"S NOT MY DVD PLAYER!!!!!!!!-lol

LOL-i forgot it was on top of the VCR. I thought it was inside the case. But dusty and all, it still played inside the DVD Player unlike those crappy tower records DVD's

You can't say..."Well. my Sanford and Son DVD plays just fine" and use that as a determinent to say, "well then all DVD's should play fine." Every movie, TV show, pre-recorded, and commercial based DVD disk is coded differently with different functions and features. I have several DVD's that came out pre-2000, where the quick features menus don't work by pressing the menu button. Disks made after Y2K, no problem whatsoever!

These manufacturers code their disks perhaps 100 different ways. It's similar to burning CD's with software that worked just fine in Windows 98. You upgrade to Windows XP, and the trusted software just stops working with a new OS. You can't predict the future when you look at the 100's of ways that disk manufacturers can code the data on these disks.

Expect to get what you pay for in a DVD player, VCR, or DVD Player combo. If you go out and get a DVD player for $50 for some "blue-light special" you are likely going to have problems playing some disks. Spend the extra $50 so you can get $100 or higher DVD player from a reputable manufacter. If you are really into this technology, go up another $100 and go to a specalty store where you can get a quality system. These little cheepy players at $50, a lot of times will not work playing all types of DVD's.

Put your DVD player in standby mode when not using it and keep the disk tray closed. If you are putting it in a cabinet, arrange your cable/dish components with the largest equipment on the bottom to the smallest on top. Try not to put anything heavy on your DVD player. (A small cable box in a cabinet situation should be about the weight limit on top of your DVD player) It's also important to allow for proper ventilation in a cabinet situation.

If your disks skip or don't play right at certain spots clean the disk gently with a soft, lint-free cloth and wipe the disk in a straight (not circular motion) from the center of the disk to the edge. (Just like you would an audio CD.) Sometimes the cheaper players are more sensitive to dust/dirt particles and don't have the built in error-compensation circuts built into them Remeber for single-sided disks, the data that is read is on the NON-LABLE side.

Get yourself a decent player. You can go to a specialty shop, get a price and than see if they will give you a deal, or go to Best Buy and see what they have with regards to the same make/model that you want.

You get what you pay for.
