On the "Inside Television's Greatest - Cheers" DVD these names were mentioned as people who auditioned for the role of Rebecca....

Madeline Smith
Sharon Stone
Kim Cattral

.... and we got Kirstie Alley?!

WOW. Sharon Stone? Well I don't like her. So I'm glad she didn't get the part. But no doubt that she would have made Rebecca a more interesting character.

Kim Cattral would've been awsome!

But wait. I remember a quote from Jim Burrows where he said they deliberately conceived of Rebecca as the opposite of Diane -- she would not be a waitress and would not be blonde, but instead a brunette. Yet two of those actresses are blonde (I'm blanking on Madeline Smith). Were they expecting any of those women, if they got the part, to dye their hair brunette?

And I actually kind of liked Kirstie Alley as Rebecca, before they started portraying her character as a special ed reject.

Cattrall could've easily dyed her hair

Rebecca was not as funny as Diane, but I don't understand all the hatred towards her character.

Because it's fun to hate people? Hm, I don't know.
I just think they could have come up with a much better character.

For myself (and a few others), the hatred transcends through Kirstie Alley into Rebecca. All we wanted was a Frasier episode.

The first half of Season 6 (before the obsession with Evan Drake), Rebecca was slick.
She was cold, she was mean, she was a bitch.... and for the first time, Sam couldn't get any.

Ohh wait, that sounds a lot like Lilith.
Maybe thats why I liked Rebecca when she was a bitch.

I agree that she was at her best as a bitch. I think I really started to dislike her in Yacht of Fools when we saw how low she would go for a rich guy...and then she practically caved in to Sam. Not cool. Too easy. Too desperate.

Yeah, Rebecca-the-bitch was DEFINATELY funnier than Rebecca-the-I-don't-have-a-life-please-feal sorry-for-me! character.

And about Kirstie Alley not guest-starring on Fraiser... that was cuz it was against her religion to not play the same character twice, right? If that's the case why could she play the same character in 150+ episodes in Cheers???

I think the whole thing with her religon was that it was against her religion to go on a show about psychiatry?

I do know that you're right, she doesn't want to reprise her previous roles. I assume her run on Cheers (the 150+ episodes) was one role and once the show ended, the role ended and now she doesn't want to reprise that character in a reunion (or, if her religion didn't prohibit Frasier, on Frasier, I would assume?) But what I don't get about that is why could she then do 3 installments of Look Who's Talking with John Travolta?

I don't think my post made any sense lol.

I guess because he is a scientologist as well.

Out of those options, she would have been the best.
Judging from her performance in Sex & the City, she would have been able to keep Rebecca's bitchiness alive.
