I remember reading about his death in the Nashville airport during Memorial Day weekend 1990. He was said to have died in his sleep. I saw a few months ago on TV Land what may have been his last acting job. In an ep of MacGyver that aired early in 1990, he played a villainous character. He looked a bit heavier than he had when he appeared on Alice, and he was wearing glasses by then.

No one thought anything of it at the time as 1.) The actor had heart surgery in the past 2.) The actor always looked middle aged or older even when he was young. He starred in both movies and TV. An autopsy did show some high levels of potentially dangerous substances which were likely administered without the actor’s knowledge.
