View Full Version : Question for people under 30 years old
TVFactFan 10-13-2004, 07:51 PM There was a survey on talk radio this morning about hw many people under 30 like black and white movies because it was said most people born after 1974 are not into black and white movies. Well I was watching black and white movies at the age of 8. And i love Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis Black and White Movies from the 1950's.
Nighthawk76 10-13-2004, 09:50 PM It depends on what the movie is. I love Hitchcock movies, and I don't care if they are in black and white or color. It all depends on the stroy. A good story is a good story, and it should not matter if it is presented in B&W or color.

I feel the same way. If it is a good movie, I don't care whether it's color or B/W. I love many of both.
I was born in 1982. I'm a film student, and I'd take any b/w film from the 30s and 40s over half the junk that gets released today.
Hmm, I've got enough time for a movie before I go to bed tonight. What shall it be, All About Eve or Scary Movie 3? ;)

I'll go along with that, but in fact, I think there are several films that are better because they're in black and white. Could you imagine seeing Casablanca in color? Eek, that would be horrible! There's something really magical about the silver touches that color films miss. That's why there are still b/w films made long after the color technology came out: Paper Moon, Psycho, Shindler's List... even Kill Bill! :)

Tough choice there.

Very true. However, there are some films like Vertigo in which the color plays a very important role in the movie. Vertigo would not have worked nearly as well in black and white. Neither would have Lawrence of Arabia.
ThirteenInchEscape 10-14-2004, 01:12 AM A director is an artist, I will leave it to their discretion what is the best way to portray their film.
webuster 10-14-2004, 12:23 PM I'm not realy prejudiced towards either type of film. I'll agree with Liza that I'd prefer many black and white films over the crap released now. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf was released in the early sixties and shot in black and white, as well as Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? I think the black and white works well for both, especially 'Virginia Woolf'- it helps capture the darker atmosphere of the film.
Kazza 10-14-2004, 03:23 PM I'm almost 30yrs old and I LOVE silent films!

True, but let's not forget that color technology was present when all of those movies were made. The first color film to win Best Picture was Gone With the Wind in 1939. It was more expensive to make color films, but it was not an impossibility. So normally I'd say there's a reason why the filmmakers chose to shoot on color or black and white. There are very few b/w movies I'd prefer to see colored.
CliffClavin 10-14-2004, 05:26 PM I myself don't care if a movie is in b & w or in color I just care if I like it or not.
Colorized films that were once black & white bother me.

I personally like to pretend that they don't exist ;)
CliffClavin 10-15-2004, 12:54 PM Maybe I should start doing that too.;)
Van_Smack 10-15-2004, 05:50 PM That bothers me too -- I'd rather them just keep it in black and white.

Emily, you are girl with very sophisticated taste. Most 22 year olds would not be as open minded concerning movies as you are.:)
CliffClavin 10-15-2004, 06:38 PM Well I'm a male who is 15 & I love LOTS of movies from Drama to Horror from any year.If I like it doesn't matter what year they came from & come on...there MOVIES, movies are a fun experience.
Zuzzy 10-15-2004, 07:05 PM I like black and white movies, the older, the better :) I've been getting into really old musicals lately.
Doo Dah 16 10-15-2004, 07:16 PM When I was about seven years old, I decided that movies in color were no good and that all those in black and white were. I know better now.
Most movies in black and white took place at the time they were made or before, and the b&w makes it really feel that they are taking place then. I mean, a World War Two film would not be the same in color.
It's all good, though. Movies just tended to be better back then.
My favorite movie is in color, and my second favorite in black and white.
By the way, the Wizard of Oz looks awesome with both-each tone really sets the mood.

Aw man, I LOVE that channel. It's absolutely my favorite one. And... we don't... get it here! :o I'm so depressed about that. What can I do, I just watch AMC. Not half as good as TCM though. :(
And yet when the football players wanted Cartoon Network... why is that a priority over the film students getting TCM? Don't answer that.
