In the episode where Lamont wants to get in touch with his African roots and tells fred that Lamont was a slave name,
Fred tells him that he was named after a Negro League pitcher named Lamont Lomax(sp.?). Did such a pitcher ever exist.
I think Fred said Lamont pitched for the Homestead Grays.
I can find nothing on the internet about such a pitcher, however, I just have a feeling that if it was included on the show as the basis for Lamont's name that there is truth in what Fred Sanford said.

I don't know if a pitcher ever existed. But I do like this episode because the african princess Lamont was trying to woo {Leggy Peggy from Uptown Saturday Night} put Lamont in his place. She told him he was disrespectful to Fred and should apprieciate him. It was about time someone did that.

Lady: Hello Mr. Sanford - I am Olaeya (sic?)
Fred: Well, it's probably the water!
