as a 24 year old, the Superman movies were a major part of my childhood years. I was always hoping Chris was going to be able to pull through and walk again. It is very sad to hear, especially since he was so courageous and willing to walk again.

RIP :(

Actor, Director and Activist Christopher Reeve Dies at Age 52

BEDFORD, N.Y., Oct. 11 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Christopher Reeve died suddenly at 5:30 p.m. yesterday of heart failure. He was 52 years old.

On Saturday October 9, Reeve fell into a coma after going into cardiac arrest while at home. Reeve was being treated for a pressure wound that he developed, a common complication for people living with paralysis. In the past week, the wound had become severely infected, resulting in a serious systemic infection. Reeve was admitted to Northern Westchester Hospital on Saturday evening and never regained consciousness. His family was at his side at the time of death.

Dana Reeve, Christopher's wife, issued this statement: "On behalf of my entire family, I want to thank Northern Westchester Hospital for the excellent care they provided to my husband. I also want to thank his personal staff of nurses and aides, as well as the millions of fans from around the world who have supported and loved my husband over the years."

"The family asks that you respect their privacy at this very difficult time, "said Wesley Combs, publicist for Mr. Reeve.

Reeve is survived by his mother Barbara Johnson and his father Franklin Reeve, his brother Benjamin Reeve, his wife Dana, their twelve year old son Will and his two children from a former relationship, Matthew (25) and Alexandra (21).

At this time, no plans for a funeral have been announced. Additional information will be released as soon as it is available. Please visit http:;//www.christopherreeve.org for the most up-to-date information.

For those who care to do so, the family has requested that donations be made in his honor to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation -- http://www.ChristopherReeve.org. Cards may be sent to the family in care of the Foundation at 500 Morris Avenue, Springfield, NJ 07081

George Reeves is the name of the actor who played Superman in the 1950s television series... which proves that this "Jack Be Quick" character is playing dumb. He/she obviously knows way more than he/she is letting on.

Let me add to our friend "Jack Be Quick" that it's one thing to "bust our balls" on a message board, but it's another (very inaproppriate) thing to do it in a thread dealing with someone's untimely death.

Please, quit pretending.

I'm devastated...truly truly devastated. I saw the Superman movies for the first time earlier this year and I thought he was such a cute person and I loved him, it was hard enough knowing that he was paralyzed. Than my sister...my 10 year old sister started watching the movies and omg that kid idolized him. She loved him so so so much. For her birthday this past Wednesday she got all the movies a Supergirl barbie, a Superman book, she has a Superman shirt and hat and shoelaces, she would get anything with Christopher Reeve on it, she loved him. Let's just say she took it really hard today, especially only being 10, and the baby in the family.

I'm in shock, I can't believe it. I don't think it's fair, with all the progress he made. He's someone that should always be remembered. And so to prevent me from crying harder than I am now I'm gonna stop.

RIP Christopher Reeve...you were Superman

“Today, we lost a man who was truly America’s hero – Christopher Reeve. Teresa and I were privileged to have known him as a friend and were deeply saddened to learn of his death. We send our prayers to his loving wife and steadfast partner Dana, his children, and the entire Reeve family. He was an inspiration to all of us and gave hope to millions of Americans who are counting on the life-saving cures that science and research can provide. He met every challenge with a courage and character that broke new ground in this struggle. As Christopher once said, ‘So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.’ Because he had the strength to carry this cause, I know one day that we will realize that inevitable dream.”—Sen. John Kerry

This morning I went to pick up yesterday's Seattle Times for the obituary of my mother, and I was shocked to read that Christopher Reeve had passed away as well. He was such a brave man in the face of his tragic injuries.

Christopher Reeve, you will always be our

SUPERMAN.

A shame to see someone who fought hard and heroically through such a trying ordeal lose his life suddenly to something that was apparenlty not related to his main battle.

You have to hand it the Christopher Reeve for remaining in the public eye after going from famous strong man to severly injured and physically weakend man who could barely breath well enough to speak. Very Courageous, Christopher Reeve. He took on a courageous mission on behalf of millions of others who suffered from and faced a similar fate to the one he was living.

Let's hope that his work will be carried on by others with even more vigor than before.

RIP Christopher Reeve

I was saddened to hear about Christopher's death. I thought the work he'd been doing for spinal cord research was really great, and hopefully it will continue to grow in his memory. The remake of Village of the Damned with him was really good, but he'll always be Superman.

I remember watching all of his Superman movies when I was a kid. He was so good as Superman, that I used to put on a red blanket, blue pants, red shorts, and a blue shirt, and pretend I was Superman.

He was my favorite Superman.

His legend will live on through his movies, and his legacy will live on through his unfortunate handicap. He was a fighter who was determined to walk again.

Earlier I posted that Chris Reeve's death was "apprarently not related to his main battle", (paralysis). I've since learned that it was. I read the following about what caused his death.

"Reeve was being treated at Northern Westchester Hospital for a pressure wound, a common complication for people living with paralysis. In the past week, the wound had become severely infected, resulting in a serious systemic infection."

The infection is what prompted the coma and then the cardiac arrest.

Reeve had a recurring role on "Smallville." I wonder how they're going to handle his passing?

My favorite Christopher Reeve movie was Superman II. The two scenes I liked most from that movie was when after giving up his Superman powers, Clark Kent and Lois Lane drive to a cafe where Clark is then battered by a truck driver. And then at the end of the movie, Clark Kent returns to that cafe after regaining his Superman powers and gets his retribution against that truck driver. After making the truck driver hurt his own hand by allowing him to punch him, he spins him on the stool and then slides him across the counter into a pinball machine. Clark then apologizes to the owner for all the damage, gives him some money in compensation, and finally explains that he has been working out.

It upset me so much to see him hurt Clark after he decided to give up his powers.. but it was great when he got that truck driver back.

does anyone here remember that superbowl commercial a few years back. It was for Nuveen and it said about spinal cord injuries. Then, you saw Chris come out and start walking. I really thought he was walking when I saw that commercial and then I found out it was computer-generated. If anyone was going to walk again it was going to be Superman.

Getting back on point, does anyone remember this commercial?

From Chris Reeve's biography:

the boys (Chris and his brother) also spent substantial visitation time with their father, who writing under the name F. D. Reeve, is a noted novelist, poet, and scholar of Russian literature. While with him, Chris and Ben were exposed to a stimulating intellectual environment that included Sunday dinners with F. D. Reeve's friends: Robert Frost, Robert Penn Warren, and Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Meanwhile, Reeve's stepfather, Tristam Johnson, generously paid tuition for the boys to attend an exclusive private school, Princeton Day School, for the academic challenge.

Holy heck. Those are some incredible people to be exposed to!

Kitt, this is off-topic, but where did you get that Superman picture from?

I thought that the 1940's cartoons, the George Reeves (1950's), Christopher Reeves (1970's-80's) Dean Cain (1990's), the newer cartoons, and the guy from Smallville (2000's) were the only men who played Superman.

Also, are those films any good?

I remember him in that.

I also remember reading in Emma Thompson's production diary (for Sense & Sensibility) about the day she found out about the accident. I remember she sounded really upset about it. She called it a "Black, black day."

:(

My favorite role of his was as Prince Charming in Faerie Tale Theatre (anyone who's gone to my homepage can guess why). I first saw him in that when I was four. And I had the hugest crush on him. I wanted to be Bernadette Peters, and have Chris battle Beverley D'Angelo just to give me a kiss. ;)

My favorite appearance of his was at the Academy Awards right after his accident. Everyone saw him and stood up applauding. He had a grin on his face that made him seem like he'd never been so happy.
