He seems fruity in and out of character. I don't mean to speak on him, he just don't seem masculine.

If this series premiered about 10 years after it did Anthony would have been a homosexual character. I agree that he was effeminate in that role, I don't know of him out of character though. The joke is that a black man (and an ex-con at that) has a platonic working relationship with 4 white women in the south. Taylor played in another series Buffalo Bill before this show and was in Dave's World after it, but I don't recall either series.

I suspect that there is a much higher percentage of homosexual men and women in entertainment than in the rest of society so Mr Taylor might well be in that numbering. The Thomason couple who created this series are big advocates of gay rights causes and use a lot of their shows to preach and evangelize their sociopolitical viewpoints.

His manner of speaking and some of his mannerisms made him appear gay, not to mention the fact that he became the partner in an interior decorating firm. (Let's face it - to most men, "decorating" means hanging a brassiere over the chandelier.) However, it seems like they took great pains in the series to portray him as hetero...remember that one ep where a woman claims her son is Anthony, Jr., and then his later love affair with Vanessa, and his marriage to Etienne.

On DAVE'S WORLD (an excellent series, by the way), Meshach Taylor played
Sheldon Baylor, a divorced plastic surgeon with a daughter, Carly (who was
played by two different actresses, Shannon Sharp and Angell Conwell).

This thread is super old and he has passed away already I know but I would like to chime in.
He's wasnt gay??!!
I never really was into designing women but my mother was a fanatic of the show so when I would catch the show from time to time I automatically assumed he was a gay character on the show and also probably gay in real life.
Now I am just now finding out that he wasn't gay?
This is news to me.
I know he is no longer with us, may he rest in peace, but I'm sorry, when I would see him on the show as a kid I naturally saw a big flaming queen. And I'm gay myself so I can spot one a mile away. I'm never wrong.
I just assumed he and his character were gay and I thought everybody else knew that too.
Wow, I feel like my eyes have just been blown wide open.
Guess you find out something new everyday.

I agree that he was effeminate in that role.

He wasn't "effeminate", he was "emasculated".

There were numerous episodes where he dated women or had a steady girlfriend (Vanessa). Yes I know some closeted gay men date and even marry women, but no, Anthony's character wasn't gay.

From 1989 to 1997, I lived in West Hollywood, California, which was (and is) a predominantly gay area of Los Angeles. In the early 1990s, I recall seeing him in WeHo quite a bit with a man. Now, they could have been just friends or an associate. They never held hands or anything, but I just remember seeing him a lot in the WeHo area and quite honestly, I just assumed he was gay.

Exactly.

Well just because he was married to a woman and had children doesn't really mean much anymore these days. Hello look at Bruce Jenner. He's been married multiple times to multiple women whom he actually did love and had several children in the process and now the man is a woman now.

Hmm... interesting. You know I wouldn't be surprised if maybe he was gay and was never able to really come out of the closet. He obviously was a much older man who grew up in a very different time than we or I did. Maybe he never felt comfortable enough to come out. And now he's gone. Very sad.
I hope he was atleast able to live the last few years of his life happy.
Stories like that really make me sad.

And not to be off-topic but I lived in the WEHO area as well from '99 to '04.
Guess we just missed each other by a couple years. lol :D
