View Full Version : Let's Do It Again (1975)
Jefffalan 10-04-2004, 08:35 PM Did anyone see the Bill Cosby/Sidney Poitier movie "Let's Do It Again" from 1975? It has both John Amos(as a gangster) and Jimmie Walker(as a prize fighter). It was made during Good Times' original run and is a very funny movie. Sort of a black version of "The Sting". John Amos is great as the Tough-Guy gangster Kansas City Mack. Worth a look.
boechsner 10-05-2004, 02:27 AM Plus the awesome, title song, "Let's Do It Again" sung by the Staple Singers. It hit #1 in the Billboard charts in 1975.
nerrad 10-05-2004, 09:06 AM Love that movie. In fact I still watch both ' Do it again, and Uptown Saturday Night. But John Amos WAS great as KC Mack. More trivia: The bald guy w/ Mack gang appeared on Good Times. Remember when Florida and Willona went to this club. Florida and "Bubba Top" began talking, then they danced.
GARFIELDKOOL 10-05-2004, 10:43 AM Loved it. Along with Uptown Saturday Night.
knl9674 10-14-2004, 03:49 PM L-O-V-E-D this movie.
even if it does remind me how much of a hypocrite bill cosby is.

I saw both Uptown Saturday Night and this one (there's a 3rd film in this series that came out in 1977 but I forgot the title of it). This film has more than a few blaxploitation elements to it, so I can see why Cosby would come off as being hypocritical.
On another note, Jimmie Walker looks like a jackass (the animal) in this movie. The poster for the film has him looking like a real donkey. In Good Times he practically looked dashing in comparison.

The beef with Bill Cosby is didn;t allow his kids to watch Good Times, The Jeffersons, or Sanford and Son because he felt that those shows presented blacks in a negative way. So i guess the hypocrite comment was made because of the type of role cosby played in Let's Do It again or how the movie featured blacks. I don;t know for sure since I never saw the Movie but i would like to see it one day.
Jefffalan 11-06-2004, 02:18 PM You HAVE to see this movie. John Amos is awesome in his role and has quite a few memorable moments. I think it just came out on DVD.
Jefffalan 11-06-2004, 02:20 PM For what it's worth, I like ALL those 1970s shows(Good Times, Sanford and Son, Jeffersons) MUCH BETTER than the Cosby Show. They are so much more entertaining and funny to me. IMO.;)

I agree, The Cosby Show does not is on the same level of entertainment as those other 3 shows.
GARFIELDKOOL 11-08-2004, 11:37 AM Bill Cosby got some nerve! GT, the J, and S&S are not negative black shows. They are based on reality. I'll bet his double standard ass watched those shows. If it wasn't for these shows, there would be no Cosby Show. One of the worse of those 70 sitcom episodes is better than the best episode of the Cosby Show any day. So Bill Cosby, go to hell and stop acting like a sellout!!!!

Bill Cosby sort of played a hustler type of character in the movies he did with Poitier, but there was redeeming value to each one. I don't remember Uptown Saturday Night as well as the others, but in Let's Do It Again, the characters tried to earn money for their organization/church, and in A Piece of the Action, they ended up as teachers at a community center. Even though they came out during the blaxploitation era, Cosby would probably say that the images in those films weren't as negative or stereotypical as others. All three movies were released on dvd this past January, so you NEED to at least rent them and check them out. Let's Do It Again is my favorite, followed by Piece of The Action. I only saw Uptown Saturday Night for the first time when I bought the dvd. I didn't get into it as much as the last two.
GARFIELDKOOL 11-08-2004, 03:30 PM Uptown Saturday Night was very good. I liked it better than the other two. This movie was pure street and Bill Cosby co-starred in it. He should not criticize Sanford and Son, Good Times, the Jeffersons. The word nig-a was used in that movie, so Bill should stop being so double standard.
marvin g 11-10-2004, 06:00 PM I thought it was interesting that a character in the movie was named Biggie Smalls!
bronxgirl 11-11-2004, 07:18 PM That's where Christopher Wallace AKA BIGGIE got the name from, ironically he had to change it to "Notorious B.I.G" when another unknown White Rapper already had the name.of course that guy 's career never went anywhere.

I was actually familiar with that guy before B.I.G. came along. Just when Notorious B.I.G. started getting some play, I remember hearing about this hot rapper named Biggie Smalls and I say no way, it couldn't be the guy I was thinking of. Not the white, blond haired rapper. It turned out to be someone else, B.I.G. It's interesting that the original guy managed to have the legal rights to that stage name and it didn't affect B.I.G.'s success at all.

That's where they get it from, those movies from the 70's. Foxy Brown got her name from the Pam Grier movie.
isiahthomas 11-13-2004, 04:45 PM Let's Do It Again movie is very funny. Jimmie Walker had me rollin when he was training. Ya'll know he can't whip nobody's ass as skinny as he is hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Remember how he hit the punching bag in the movie? LOL.
