View Full Version : It's hard to understand Florida Sometimes
GARFIELDKOOL 10-02-2004, 11:01 AM The family was dirt poor. The black jesus episode where everyone was having good luck and she had a problem with it. When Michael came in and said, "I got five dollars!" Florida screamed,"OH nooo" 5 bucks? As poor as they were, that would have came in handy. Then the windfall episode where James found all that money and kept $2,000. for himself that nobody would have ever known about. She should have been overjoyed. Like the theme song says, scratchin' and survivn'. You can't scratch no harder than that. Sometimes I wonder if she liked being poor. I loved the Florida character, but in those episodes, she got on my, DAMN, DAMN, DAMN nerves.
isiahthomas 10-02-2004, 01:09 PM LOL@she got on your damn nerves hahahahahahahahahahaha. If i was James, i would've kept that $2,000.

What was really dumb was Florida refusing to do a TV Commercial for $5000 because she would be telling lies. Damm she was dumb.
bronxgirl 10-02-2004, 06:21 PM Remember How everytime James found away to make money she would always cry "JAMES THAT'S NOT THE LORD'S WAY!!" ohno:My favorite was when he had a chance to get them all out the prjects and Florida was upset b/c it was in Alaska!? Woman look around you you lived it the worst pj in the country! If that was my mother she would have been packing his bags before he could tell her what the job was LOL.
nerrad 10-05-2004, 09:13 AM That vita brite episode really did for me. Telling lies???? Just take the freakin' money. And why would they drink it.
CCRYDER1968 10-05-2004, 04:54 PM I don't know anybody THAT religious they wouldn't take a few grand!Hell,if she felt that bad about it she coulda donated $500 to the church and help a few people out!
laneyday 10-07-2004, 02:48 PM My dad was more religious than Florida and he WOULD have kept the money regardless. He would have convinced my mother that the lord sent it and meant for him to have it and gave the rest away out of good deed. That's reality. I don't think Norman Lear or whoever else was writing new what was really real when it came down to it.

Nobody in their right mind would turn it down.I would definitely look at it as a gift from God!
GARFIELDKOOL 10-08-2004, 10:16 AM That's why I don't understand Florida. It's not like the money was stolen. Or as they said back then, "Hot."
nerrad 10-08-2004, 02:29 PM However, she was all for JJ and Sweet Daddy Williams becoming partners. I was watching that episode last night on TVONE. The "Skank episode". James didn't like the fact that JJ is doing business with a hustler, but Florida was all for it. Of course I thought about this board while it was on.
GARFIELDKOOL 10-08-2004, 02:45 PM Now that you mention it, she was willing to let J.J. get bailed out of jail by a loanshark on one episode.
CCRYDER1968 10-08-2004, 02:47 PM Are you guys trying to say Florida was a hypocrite?
nerrad 10-08-2004, 02:55 PM Yep. She was an hypocrite. "James, this has got me telling lies". "James, what are you doing here when you are on television". As religious as she was, she didn't know that adultry was mentioned in the bible.
As James would say, "end of the first inning, score, Michael 1, Florida, nothing.
knl9674 10-14-2004, 03:11 PM i have to agree on this. florida got on my ever loving NERVES with that!
but actually, that was the premise of her character. she was a strong, christian woman trying to bring children up against all odds. the main reason florida didn't do a lot of underhanded things was because she was always so concerned with how the kids would interpret it. she was a strong believer in that ideology that it's not what you tell your children, but it's what you show them. she said in more than 1 episode about how she was trying to "raise a christian household." and i think this was very important to her.
this further proves, IMO, the whole point of the show. that you could have corruption, violence, poverty, lack of eduction....the worst of the worst stacked against you, but that doesn't mean you have to succumb to your environment. their home and how they chose to live their lives was distinctly different than what was just outside of their door. they guided their actions with love, respect, pride, value of family, high morale regard and ethical responsibility.
yes, she bugged me to not just take the $5k, but it wouldn't have been in character and it would have killed her conscience to do so.
just what i'm thinking....
