I was thinking about this the other day. Do you think Lucy would have been who she was, or actually let me rephrase that. Do you think her height in popularity as a sitcom star would have been the same had she ended up marrying Al Hall instead of Desi?

My thoughts are this, I think she may have gone on to being on a sitcom, but I don't think she would have ever got to be as big as she did with Desi. The way the studio, and the three camera design came together really made them. Also I don't think the show would have gone down in history without Desi's input into it. I do beleive Lucy would have had a name for herself, she was queen of the B's but I don't think she would have been the Lucy she is now. The chemistry between Lucy and Desi' Genius and their Love for eachother together building the Desilu Empire plus the chemistry between Lucy Desi Viv and Bill were unmatched.

Even though I still beleive Lucy had the drive and she would have stayed in the spotlight somehow, Lucy wanted to do anything to perform, But honestly I think she wouldn't have been the caliper of an actress or Legend as she would have if she had never married or met Desi. In a way he truly kinda was the wind beneath her wings, and they Loved eachother til the end of time.

Al Hall was Lucy's b-friend at the time she met Desi..He was a movie director back then. Desi was going out with a De Marco dancer at the time too; her pet name was Freckles. At a beach party, Lucy and Desi sighted each other and never went back to their regular partners.

I think Nostalgia is right. If Lucy would've stayed with Al she was going to be the Queen B forever. With Desi it was totally different; both had the drive and the passions set..All they did was put it together and tv history was born!

Thanks for the info. That is so cool! I'm so glad that Lucy and Desi got together, it's just sad that their marriage had to end.:(

Being divorced myself I can say that there are different types of divorcing: Physically, Mentally and both
In Lucy's case she may have divorced Desi physically BUT mentally she was always with him and viceversa. Many people don't recall that HE was the one that asked for the divorce first and just not to make a big scandal much worse; she filed the next day

But then she let Al Hall direct her and Desi in FOREVER DARLING. And she let Betty Grable co-star with her and Desi on their show, even though Desi had had an extramarital fling with Grable years before. Hollywood . . . strange place.

I am not sure about something maybe someone here can clarify this for me, was Al Hall MARRIED at the time of his engagement to Lucille? I heard he was, and was pending to divorce his wife AND he had children. Or maybe I am thinking of one of Lucille's other beau's. I am not sure ???

Yeah, I think in a way Desi was an unsung hero in Lucille's Life, granted we all make mistakes, Lucy and Desi both, but when all is said, he was the true love of her life and he gave her the lift she needed.

At least their divorce was amicable. My Aunt is going through the divorce from hell. It is settled, but the guy she was marrid to was an ass. Lucy and Desi stayed friends, well friends with benefits anyways :D and just as I was thinking the other day, if they had never met we wouldn't have known her for what she became really, she would have been Lucille.

I was reading an article in Talk magazine that I recently acquired and it has a bunch of accounts about Lucy from people she knew and even reading and re-watching interviews and having the opportunity to talk to some of the people first hand, Spending time with the Arnaz's at their ranch, the way they felt about family and friends and togetherness, the parties, and everyone was happy, Lucy would never have had that with Al Hall.

Ultimately it was a shame that things came down the way they did, and having to divorce, marked the end of so many things, and I think that accounted for a lot of the bitterness later on in Lucy's life. She NEVER had that{the parties, the togetherness, the family aspect] with Gary and as I said earlier and someone else did She would have never had that with AL HALL either.

I find it amusing that Henry Fonda once said, that too bad Lucy hadn't given him the time of day, but had she the Big empire would have been HENRYLU......somehow I doubt that

Yes she did let Al HAll direct her, but after having Desi, I don't thinks she still had anything for Al Hall. She could have been with anyone else, and later even being with Gary, her heart still belonged to Desi. After a while after the divorce, i honestly doubt he ever seen in Edie what he saw in Lucy, Now why people do the things they do in life is a mystery one will never understand, but even the mistakes we make in life, Love will always come through. You can't fool your own heart or deny your true feelings.

It's so sad that within a year of their divorce BOTH of them were remarried. But whether they were married or not, Lucy and Desi loved each other til their dieing days.

Yep. That is a love that doesn't happen too many times in a lifetime. And just like Desi once said, I Love Lucy is something, that happens Only Once in a lifetime, if you're lucky to have it happen at all.....I Love Lucy was never just the title.

Okay Jen, let's review:

1) No, Al Hall was NOT married when they were dating, he was divorced from an actress named Lola Lane. It is Pandro Berman you are thinking of. He wanted to give it all up for Lucy and she wouldn't let him.
2) Yes, Desi was the love of Lucy's life and vice versa, Gary wasn't the great guy everyone made him out to be, yada yada yada, moving on....
3) Just some advice: Be careful what you say and who you say it to. People twist things around and that's how rumors fly.

I was thinking about another thing having to do with her fame. What if she didn't dye her hair red. Do you really think she would have been percieved the same? I think it would change Lucy as we know her drastically! I mean, she would still be Lucy, but it just wouldn't have been the same!! Tell me what you think!!

That is definitely a good question, Jen. (ironically you and I are both named Jen and it just so happens that i have red hair too) ;)

Anyways here are my theories on it. I think Ultimately
the red hair thing was her trademark. I think she is just as beautiful as a Blonde or a brunette, but the red hair made a statement, and if it was anything Lucy loved was to make a statement. Lucy once remarked she didn't want to be just "another Hollywood blonde" plus she was soing a lot of movies in which she was a brunette or blonde and really didn't make the mark she was hoping for, but at least she was working steady, I think once she became a redhead it amplified her not only to producers, and directors, but to audiences, and just like the commentary in the Home movie, when she went red, people started calling her "that crazy red head". i guess it gave her career a little extra boost. The red hair isn't her talent, so I still think she could have been "Lucy Ricardo" without redhair, but it amplified the character, made her stand out. Personally I couldn't see Lucy Ricardo as a Blonde, she was already ditzy enough, and having been blonde, and as I always say, Blondes don't have
more fun, they have more questions ;) j/k
BTW Having Been a Blonde I can say that without Prejuduce. LOL

Mel,
Ok it was Pandro Berman, thank you for clearing that up.
I don't know how that could start a rumour or anything, like i said I was mixed up on the facts, I wasn't sure if it was Al Hall or not. But anyways thanks for clarifying that.

Thanks again for clearing that up. I didn't mean any harm by that remark, I was merely saying something in jest.
