I mean i know she was not easy on the eyes but wasn't she ok for Grady??-LOL I mean who else did they expect Grady to be involved with? A Beautiful Woman? Fred even said himself that Who would marry Grady? So if he felt that way why would he be laughing so hard when he saw how ugly Dolly was?

Because she was a pooch. It was a pretty obvious sight gag, in my opinion.
Similar to the time when Fred & Lamont first saw Betty Jean & started cracking up when they got into the kitchen....
Lamont: What are we gonna give her to eat?
Fred: How about a whale?

Lamont shouldn't laugh. He was a 35 year-old loser who needed his 65 year-old father to cook his meals.

I think Fred and Lamont laughed harder when Grady was telling the story of how they met at the J.C. Penney store. About Grady buying a tie to match his charcoal grey beard. I thought Fred would fall off his chair when Grady was telling that story.

Dolly was a dog, that's why! They deliberately made her plain but it probably wasn't hard. This same character played "Jackie" the airline stewardess on the episode where Fred & Lamont have to fly to St. Louis to bury a relative of Fred's. It's soooo funny when Fred finds out that no money is left over after they bury his relative. Fred talks about his "peanut shaped head", he had spot in his head where a puddle of water would be after it rained & Fred said that it's one less ugly person in the world.

The episode with Dolly is very funny. The reactions that Fred and Lamont have to her are priceless. As mentioned in an earlier thread it is much like their reaction to Betty Jean. Those scenes when Fred and Lamont actually laugh together really seem to get the audience going as well. I dont think that their reaction to Dolly is so much that they expected more from Grady, but that she actually comes in the door as if she is quite the catch.
