DETROIT -- Police are searching for a man who opened fire inside an in-home day care center on Detroit's northwest side Tuesday, killing a 3-year-old boy and injuring two women.

The child initially was hospitalized in critical condition after the morning shootings. Police spokesman James Tate said in the afternoon that the child had died.

A seven-month-old child, who was dropped during the incident, also was taken to an area hospital, said Detroit Police Chief Elly Bully-Cummings.

Cummings said the shootings “appear as though this was not random,” but would not release any other details.

Neighbors say the incident happened around 8 a.m. on Woodbine Street. A man came to the door of a home and asked if it was a day care center, police said. He then walked inside and opened fire.

The victims are identified as Annette Rice, 41, who runs the state-licensed day care facility, Annette's Ltl Tots, out of her home, and Sherita White Griggs, 22, Rice's niece. Police would not release the 3-year-old boy's name.

Police are searching for a man in his early 20s, weighing 200 to 220 pounds and wearing dark clothing.

some people should just die. if you must kill someone don't do it unless they deserve it.

People who injur children are the most evil people around. What kind of twisted mind can take pleasure out of harming innocent little kids?

I agree that a man like that deserves death, but it should be
carried out by the state, not by private citizens.

There was a Detroit paper in the break room at work today and I read that they are now saying that although the 2 adults injured were shot the child was actually beaten to death.

Oh sorry, I'll have to edit that. The two adults that were injured were shot but they said in the paper that the 3 yr old was actually beaten not shot.
