I always thought "supergroup" meant a band consisting of already-established, well-respected musicians.

I was ready to say The Traveling Wilburys.

when I was thinking "80's supergroup", I was thinking the lines of Asia, Travelling Wilburys, Mike & The Mechanics and others along that line.

I consider a supergroup to be a band that was really big. Led Zeppelin are always refered to as a supergroup.
