WPIX is adding four '70s sitcoms to its Saturday night lineup effective 10/2 according to the NY Post and the NY Daily News.

8PM Welcome Back, Kotter
8:30 The Jeffersons
9PM The Odd Couple
9:30 Taxi

Oh, wow, this is great. 4 classic '70s sitcoms there. Though, The Odd Couple already airs 5 days a week, so they should air something else there like What's Happening!! or One Day at a Time. Welcome Back, Kotter is rare. WPIX is the only local airing it now, though it has a cable run on Goodlife TV. Nice to see Taxi back (it was airing 5 days a week until mid-September, then it disappeared).

This is pleasant news, indeed. I wonder if they are planning to put those shows on more than 1x a week or if this is just a one time thing? Most local stations strip their shows at least 5x a week and as much as 15-20x if they can get away with it. Jeffersons has enough episodes to have it one that many times a week.

A couple years ago they had an Addams Family marathon which suggests that at least at that time they had that show in their ownership and could put it into rotation. Maybe the marathon had poor ratings and they changed their minds.

That is an awesome lineup.

Any idea if these series' episodes are going in order?

Yuck. I wish the FCC would use their powers for good instead of evil for a change and do something about "bugs." Almost every network and cable channel now uses them, and four out of seven locals in my area have them.

WPIX would have my undying love if the episodes were uncut, but I'll take what I can get.

Maybe they should do some viewer's choice marathons...

My locals don't use bugs to run promos for upcoming shows, or to tell you what you're currently watching... yet. They just have their logos on the bottom right corner of the screen. And even worse is the fact that the logos are huge (especially KXLY, my ABC affiliate) and they're full-color (with the exception of my KSPS, my PBS, which has a smaller, transparent black and white logo).

The only holdouts right now are my UPN affiliate (KQUP) and my CBS and WB affiliates (KREM and KSKN, which are under the same owndership). But I have a feeling it won't be long before their logos are plastered on their signals.

I've noticed that 24/7 bugs started about twelve years ago with VH1 and E! (although I know CNN has been using them since the '80s), and the trend immediately started worsening.

I have this fear that one day, they'll invade our DVDs.

Tribune Broadcasting's The WB Television Network affiliate, WPIX New York, has decided to clear out its movies and repurposed WB shows Saturday night -- the netlet doesn't program Saturday -- to make room for a block of New York-themed 1970s sitcoms.

The "PIX at Night" block (not to be confused with PAX or Nick at Nite) launches Oct. 2 with a slate of Welcome Back, Kotter, The Jeffersons, Odd Couple, and Taxi.

Odd Couple already airs on the station at 2:30 a.m. and will continue to run there as well.

The move is a combination of several factors, according to a station spokesman. For one, A-list broadcast movie packages are harder to come by, with films often going first to the cable channel siblings of studios. For another, the flood of first-run, syndicated action dramas that had been a staple of the station has become a trickle. The third?--a creative program director.

Surprised they didn't simply mention audience interest in older shows like these. It is weird to see these types of shows in a time slot where they used to show stuff like Deep Space Nine and Xena Warrior Princess, but I'm not complaining. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing WBK again.

Our local WB station uses this freaking black box promoting the next show that takes up half the freaking screen. I think they've finally quit doing that after alot of complaints.

Also, WPIX has more in store for Halloween and beyond:

Starting at 8 p.m. Oct. 2, WPIX will run, in order, Warner Bros.' "Welcome Back, Kotter," Sony Pictures TV's "The Jeffersons," and Paramount's "The Odd Couple" and "Taxi."

Although all four shows taped in Los Angeles, they are set in New York. O'Neil said they all share "a New York sensibility."

Other sitcom oldies bought by WPIX include "The Munsters" and "The Addams Family," which will share a Halloween marathon. WPIX picked up "Bewitched" as a marathon stunt for next year as a tie-in to the theatrical version of "Bewitched," with Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell.

It would be nice to get WPIX. All of our stations in Louisville only show 1990's retread garbage that sucked when it was new and sucks now. They also shove 4 hours of news a day down your throat. I'm so sick of news, politics, and Iraq that I don't watch any news anymore and don't even care what goes on. They just can't get enough it seems.

I'm in New York and I still have WPIX. Looks like channel 11 is bringing back the classics for the first time since it was on WPIX back in the 70's and 80's.

I get WPIX on my satellite (I have Bell ExpressVu). It's about time we got The Jeffersons and Welcome Back, Kotter in Canada. I can't remember the last time either show was rerun “North of the Border”. Taxi has been (or still is) being rerun here as well as The Odd Couple.

I could tell you a few other shows that have been rerun in Canada but they'll come up in another post at some point later on.

Can someone tape me The Jeffersons? I'll pay

How exactly is it that I keep bringing it up? I didn't even start this thread and hadn't posted in it in over a week. We've been on good terms with each other so I don't know why you're getting on my case, but take the advice you gave me a few months ago: if it bothers you, you don't have to read the thread.

I started this whole thread and meant to add it to the general syndication thread and not make it it's own thread. I accidentally made it its own thread. But, WPIX is a station that is seen by many people outside of NY. It's available to almost all satellite subscribers and across areas outside of the NY tv market. So while I didn't intend to make this its own thread, I think it is justified.

I understand. WBK is the one I most wanted to see, I've already got the first two Jeffersons seasons on dvd and Taxi is coming out soon. So Kotter is the only one I was really interested in.

I caught this last night and I'm confused. Last week they aired the first episodes of all 4 series, but yesterday they went way out of order in each case (I didn't stick around to see which Taxi episode they showed, but my local paper's TV guide says that next week they'll be showing Elaine's Strange Triangle from season 3). My question is how does a viewer know which episodes of these shows they are going to air? TVguide.com doesn't give episode summaries as if even they don't know which episode WPIX is going to air. My local paper had a plot summary for last night's Jeffersons that was incorrect.

They aired My Dinner With Harry for the Jeffersons and an Odd Couple episode where Felix redecorates the apartment (I think that's from that series' 3rd season). I guess both of those would be consider all time fan favorites of those series as would that Taxi episode, but the Welcome Back Kotter episode was a pretty dull Xmas episode from the last season that didn't even have Gabe Kaplan in it. My ultimate question is what is the logic behind the order in which WPIX is airing the episodes of these shows? It's nice to see them again, but I'd prefer to know which episodes are coming on beforehand.

If they're going to air fan favorite episodes totally out of sequence the least they could do is do what Screen Gems TV Network did a few seasons back: put thematically similar episodes together and include some trivia before and after the commercial breaks to keep things fresh.
