View Full Version : "Listen Up" Premiere
barwars 09-20-2004, 09:08 PM Ohh god this show sucked.
Throughout the entire show, I was truly feeling sorry for Jason Alexander (and to a lesser extent Malcolm Jamal-Werner). This was terrible.
I did however find it funny that the wife is played by the red-headed nun from "Sister Act"
besides that, complete bummer.
I hope Center of the Universe is better.

:yeahthat except I didn't really feel bad for Jason. He has a producer's credit so he's partly to blame too. But once it was over, I said "the curse continues"

haha, I liked Watchie Ellie, that wasn't too bad.
I never saw The Michael Richards Show
and as for Bob Patterson -- I enjoyed it 10 times better than this.
db108108 09-20-2004, 10:22 PM I like the first season of Watching Ellie, but I watched the second season premiere, which was "new and improved" and it was RANCID. It magically became just like every other sitcom on the air, only not as funny. The uniqueness the first season had was evaporated.
Another bland, family sitcom. The soccer song was an all time low Jason.
Wendy Makenna, who plays Jason's wife was much better in another short lived FOX show that shouldn't have been cancelled "Oliver Beane." She's just wasted here.
Oh, a note to all family sitcoms; can we please move away from the "pissy teenage daughter who's embarrased by her family" cliche?
It's getting a bit stale.
Better luck next time Jason.
;)
Skywalker 09-20-2004, 10:31 PM It's the Seinfeld curse
Will and Grace Fanatic 09-21-2004, 12:36 AM I think this show is pretty good. It's no Seinfeld but decent enough. I hope it does last.

Me neither.
I can't support bad TV.
treky 09-21-2004, 04:14 PM :yeahthat
It's possible I was predisposed to hate this because it took the place of "Yes, Dear," but even after struggling for things to like about "Listen Up," I couldn't find one. There is no chemistry among anyone in the cast, and that is the worst sin a sitcom can commit. Even though it got good sampling and built on "Still Standing," I have a hunch Jeff Martin's going to have two sports sitcoms on his belt that were both cancelled a month into the fall season.
For the record, I thought the first season of "Watching Ellie" was terrific. The second season was unwatchable. And I have nothing against multi-camera sitcoms, but that retooling went over about as well as if HBO told Larry David to start shooting "Curb Your Enthusiasm" in front of a studio audience.
Mr. Television 09-21-2004, 05:50 PM If I would have talked to my father the way that daughter talked to hers, I would have got smacked and I don't think I would still be on the soccer team. As for the show I thought it was alright but nothing special.

I agree completely with both parts.
As much as I dont like Everybody Loves Raymond.... at least it isn't stupid.
Listen Up, however, is.
Mrs. Ducky 09-21-2004, 07:30 PM I watched it. It wasn't that great but I'll probably watch it more.(never judge a show by it's first episode)
Ritterfan98 09-21-2004, 11:23 PM I watched it was alright not the greatest. I thought it was going to be allot better than what it was. However i did notice that the daughter was played by the same actress that played Missy Rory's girlfriend on 8 simple rules..Did any one else pick up on that? Oh yeah and the skinny pre-nun from sister act was in it too.
dawsongirl 09-22-2004, 02:40 AM  Guess I'm glad I went to bake a cake after Still Standing was over.
Sosafan21 09-22-2004, 05:34 AM I thought it was okay, still to early to say it was a bust, one of the few brand new sitcoms over the past 5 years that kept my attention(thru the 30 minutes) and had me looking foward to next week.
CCRYDER1968 09-27-2004, 09:05 PM Ok,I watched the first episode and didn't like it so I gave it a second chance tonight...I'm sorry! I just don't like it.I find the teenage daughter annoying, not entertaining.Plus, none of the characters interact well with each other. It's like they are just actors doing a part(well, duh! Technically they are,but you know what I mean:D )I was hoping well for Malcom Jamal warner...oh well, maybe next time! And Jason Alexander...let's try another one...I'll keep my fingers crossed till you get another hit:)
p.s...given the time slot, though, the show may very well hang in there.
Ritterfan98 09-28-2004, 10:21 AM i totally agree with you. i didn't really like the first epidode i have not seen the second yet i have it on tape but i am debating wheter or not to watch it. It looked like a promising sitcom but i don't think anything can help this show. I find it to be not in tune with itself. There is no Chemistry. The daughter is whinny..i still remember her from her 8 simple rules days..she was quiet and better!!! I do not know if this show is going to make it but i think a lot of peole are tuning it off. i think i will stick with Raymond and 2 1/2 men.
The ratings last night made me cry. Why ARE people still watching it?

Because of the time slot...those of us that want to watch Raymond and 2 1/2 Men are "forced"(ok,not really)to watch it.
barwars 10-04-2004, 08:47 PM and all it does is get worse....
headsup for CBS:
kill
it
now
Montana Ponine 10-05-2004, 09:25 PM Actually I thought last night's episode was quite an improvement...it was decent, I thought. I wasn't going to watch it, but I'm glad I did. I got a kick out of the whole basketball/licorice thing.

*Lol* Yes I did laugh at that bit. Last night's episode was my first taste of Listen Up. I thought that it was okay, but it could be much better. I will stick with it and see if it improves or not.

I caught the episode on 10/4 and it was ok, bland basically.
Then:
I watched 2 minutes of the show last night and as soon as the daughter acted pissy and embarrassed- again- and Jason Alexander complained that he and his daughter used to be so close- AGAIN- I turned it off and I will never watch the show AGAIN.
CliffClavin 10-12-2004, 01:30 PM why?
dlemond 10-12-2004, 01:35 PM Originally posted by CliffClavin

Because they are harping on the cliche over and over- I mean 2 episodes in a row where he basically complains about the same thing- his daughter doesnt want to hang out with him.
I can almost swear he said the exact same line, something like "I don't understand, we used to be pals"
Come on, 2 episodes in a row?
And that means it is going to be a running theme throughout the show. As TJL said, haven't we've had enough of that pissy daughter who is embarrassed by her family?
Plus, the show is just not very funny.
Bob's TV Treasures 10-15-2004, 09:24 AM I agree. The SEINFELD curse continues. Jason Alexander is in another bomb...wait, I take that back...bombs go off, this just goes on and on. If it wasn't sandwiched between STILL STANDING and RAYMOND, it would've been the season's first casualty. BRING BACK "YES, DEAR!!!"
Hell, bring back "Bob Patterson." Seeing Jason Alexander taking a dump or having an ill-timed erection are starting to seem mighty appealing all of a sudden.
Marvo301 10-29-2004, 04:19 AM The premise of the show has good comedy potential. Unfortunately the show is very poorly written. The dialogue is juvenile. A talented cast is wasted on this lousey material!
sonyab 11-02-2004, 12:40 PM Ouch most of you hate the show.. Well I hope you don't hate me but I love the show. It always cracks me up. He reminds me of George Costanza.. I think the Seinfeld Curse is broken!!! Okay go ahead and hate me.. :(
CCRYDER1968 11-02-2004, 07:36 PM We don't hate you! We just hate this show!
sonyab 11-03-2004, 11:00 AM hehe okay.. :) So I guess you don't watch the show anymore?
michael9607 11-03-2004, 03:52 PM I love the show cause it carries over George's zany Seinfield personality. I'm not sure it'll be on much longer as last show was already a rerun after only 3 or 4 shows. I am looking forward to Seinfield on dvd in November!
Be Blessed!
:)
