I think it's so sad that CBS never gave the cast a proper sendoff after so many years.

I wonder how they would've said goodbye?

I prefer that it ended the way that it did (although I never saw the last episode). We posted earlier that they couldn't really do anything all that spectacular to end it. I liked that they kept the characters going in commercials/Fresh Prince etc. The two parter Laundry is A Tough Town which was produced at the end of year 8 but actually broadcast at the start of year 9 would have been a good finale (and considering how the show declined after this they might have been smart to call it a day at that point - but the show was #3 in the ratings so they weren't about to cancel it then).
