View Full Version : Glitch in "Weird Science"?
To those of you who've actually opened and are enjoying the ALF set (myself included), instead of just complaining and crying about the fact that 120 seconds or less have been cut from each episode while refusing to buy or open their set...did anyone else notice a small glitch in the last few minutes of "Weird Science" on Disc 3? It's the scene near the end where Willie & ALF are in the kitchen discussing Brian's project. Anyway, lines jump on the screen for about 5 seconds. It's a minor distraction, although for $34, I expect the whole set to be perfect video/audio wise...if nobody else's set has this, I may try returning it or getting a disc replacement...
This should be a really simple question for anyone who has watched to answer...I need to know, time is running out to exchange the whole set or get a disc replacement...I'd really appreciate input!
tazz765 09-28-2004, 06:02 AM Yes, this glitch is on my set too.
Ant-Lox 09-29-2004, 09:14 AM i looked for it and found nothing, do you have the time when it happened in the episode?
Well, it's a little reassuring that's it's on someone else's set too. Beyond that, it sucks that it's there...for over $30 it should have been perfect...
Anyway, no, I don't have the exact time. It's on Disc 3 in episode "Weird Science" near the end w/ Willie and ALF in the kitchen talking. The same line thing happens for a split second in the "Do You Remember" 2-parter in the flash back where ALF comes into the bedroom as Santa...does anyone know what that problem is considered? Is it like something to do with compression, or the disc changing layers or something?
theshark8777 11-27-2004, 01:12 AM Could it be something like the Punky Brewster ones where it was on tape and not film, and there was a tape problem.
LightrideBoy 11-30-2004, 12:32 PM That seems likely. I would have thought laser encoding would have fixed it. Laser encoding is one of the best things to happen to media, imho.

Honestly, my copy didn't have any of the problems that you mention in your posts. "Weird Science" and "Try to Remember" played perfectly audio/video wise...
Actually, I watched that ep a while back again and the problem didn't seem as severe as I described. It's still there, but is much less noticeable. This could also be partly because my dvd player is a lower end, $45 "Yamakawa" model. I'm sure it would play better on a higher-end, progressive scan player...
Jeff003 01-23-2005, 11:56 PM I have a Toshiba which cost $179 and I saw the same thing on several episodes.I don't remember if it happened in that episode but I did see what you described in others especially the one where they think alf ate the cat it happened when he was at the pound and he just got out.It looked like the picture jumped or frame changed. At first I thought it was pixilating but maybe it was just the transfer.I saw it in several episodes.
Another thing I've noticed is that in "Border Song" in the first scene after the opening credits, when Willie's on the phone (trying) to speak Spanish, on the bottom of the screen there are some weird jumpy lines that last for a while...it's not too bad, but again, this all should have been perfect. The "Here's Lucy" dvd set, for almost $6 less than what I paid for this, has absolutely gorgeous transfers that look like they were filmed yesterday but are well over 30 years old...
theshark8777 02-02-2005, 05:34 PM Part of that also could be because they were "filmed" and not taped as Alf was.
