I'm asking because CATM had done so well in the Friday Night Time slot in the 1974-75 season but I read NBC wanted to move the show to Wednesday Nights in jan of 1976. So i was wondering what was different in season 2 because I didn't see any other show on CBS or ABC that was giving CATM competition on Friday Night. THe NBC top programmer said the show was not doing well on Fridays in fall of 75. So just wondering what was different in that season.

ANSWER:
THE STUPIDITY OF THE PROGRAMING DEPARTMENT!!!!

All three of the networks in the sixties and seventies were NOTORIOUS for STUPID programing decisions. That is the reason a lot of good shows fell by the wayside and eventually got the axe. Hollywood was and still is notorious for trying to push their pet projects at the expense of others, even if the others were proven products. THIS more than anything else drove the viewers and the fans of many hit shows absolutely NUTS. I grew up in this time period and remember it all like it was yesterday. CATM wasn't the only show to fall victim to this MADNESS. Don't ask me to explain it except to say it all had to do with POWER and EGO. (on the part of the powers that be!)

Then it looked like nothing changed because after the show was moved to Wednesday Night, it was moved right back to Friday-lol

I think Chico and the Man was moved to Wednesdays during its second season because CatM ranked at #3 during its first season and continued to rank in the Nielsen Top 10 early in its second season.

When Chico and the Man was moved from Fridays to Wednesdays, a new sitcom titled The Practice (which starred Danny Thomas and is not to be confused with the ABC series of the same name) was placed in the post-Sanford and Son timeslot. In the fall of 1976, CatM ended up back in the post-Sanford and Son timeslot, and The Practice was moved to Wednesdays (and would ultimately be cancelled at midseason).

Looks like Donny and Marie helped kill CATM once it returned to Friday nights in fall of 76

If Freddie didn't kill himself, they might have moved the show to a better night.

NBC continued the show without him, so there's no reason to believe that if he had lived the show wouldn't have gotten a 4th year anyway, perhaps on a better night.

Maybe they have a reason for what they do.

We can be glad Chico ran 4 years, if you wanna count its last season without him.

i think I get it, if you feel you have multiple hits why not spread them around the week instead of having them all airing the same night
