View Full Version : The Supremes
musicradio77 09-12-2004, 07:00 PM Our Motown 45th Anniversary Artists Avatar of the Week is back to stay. So this week, will feature on of Motown's biggest super female group, the Supremes. The group began in the Brewster Projects back in the late 50's consisted of Diana Ross, Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson. The group signed with Motown in 1961 and released their first single "I Want a Guy", it flopped it first followed by "Buttered Popcorn". The first song made it to the Top 10 was "When the Lovelight Shines Right Through His Eyes". In 1964, their first #1 hit "Where Di Our Love Go" was a success. It was wriiten by teams of Holland-Dozier-Holland. The group did successfully with other big hits like "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Back In My Arms Again" and other big #1 hits. In the late 60's Florence left the Supremes and replacing it with Cindy Birdsong. The group continued with their hits like "Reflections", "I'm Living In a Shame" and a duet with the Temptations on "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me". Diana's last single was "Someday We'll Be Together" was a #1 hit at the end of 1969. Diana left the Supremes in 1970's to go solo. I'll have more on Diana's solo career next week. The Supreme did well in the 70's with Jean Terrell as her replacement with songs like "Up the Ladder to the Roof", "Stoned Love" and "Nathan Jones". The Supremes offically left their seperate ways in 1977. The group came back with Diana for a reunion concert. It flopped. That's was just another story.
MissZero 09-12-2004, 07:03 PM Good choice...I loooove The Supremes

It was good that it worked out like that. I think it's fitting that the last #1 single of the 60's was a song from that decade's top American group titled "Someday We'll Be Together". Seemed like a perfect way to say goodbye to the decade and to the group with Diana Ross.
musicradio77 09-12-2004, 09:13 PM Next week, will feature a solo career of Diana Ross.:)
isiahthomas 09-13-2004, 11:51 AM Diana Ross had a huge ego problem & i'm surprised The Supremes lasted as long as they did. Her & Mary Wilson didn't get along which led to the group breakin up & Diana didn't even go to Florence Ballard's funeral cause i heard her & Diana were at odds with each other. Diana Ross looks ugly as hell on the album cover of Mahogany soundtrack hahahahahahahaha. Whenever i see that album cover, it scares the hell outta me LOL. That album has the song Ain't No Mountain High Enough on it.
Bob's TV Treasures 09-13-2004, 12:25 PM You missed one important supremes record...
They made one on a small Detroit label called LUPINE Records under the name "The Primettes." It's LUPINE #120 ("Pretty Baby" backed with "Tears of Sorrow"). It currently sells for around $800.00, and at that time, the group was a
QUARTET.

isiahthomas 09-13-2004, 08:24 PM What album of her's was Ain't No Mountain High Enough on?
Dean Winchester 09-13-2004, 08:32 PM Ain't No Mountain High Enough was on Diana's self titled debut solo album from 1970.... not to be confused with her self-titled 1976 album which had Love Hangover

I love Diana but she does have an ego...I remember a few years back she performed in my area and they had to put a special carpet down because she refused to step on the linoleum (sp?)
isiahthomas 09-14-2004, 10:51 AM LOL@Diana didn't wanna step on linoleum hahahahahahahaha. She got issues. She ain't nobody special with that long ass weave of her's LOL. Remember when she got busted by the police in Arizona earlier this yr for drunk driving? LOL. I know she felt stupid.
Bob's TV Treasures 09-14-2004, 11:47 AM Same woman who had a number one hit with a song called
"Love Hangover" gets pulled over for DUI. That's funny.

Can you post a link to that picture please?
isiahthomas 09-16-2004, 10:27 AM Go to Artistdirect.com & see the picture of her. Her album is self titled that has a ugly picture of her on the cover. It came out in 1970. I wish i knew how to post pictures cause i would post the album cover of her. I didn't know Reach Out & Touch Somebody's Hand song was on that album.
Is this the picture of Dana Ross you're speaking of?

I think that's a cool cover, just because it presents a dressed down image of Diana Ross. She was seen as glamorous even with the Supremes and of course she would overdose on the hair and sequins in later years, so it's nice that they used such a natural picture of her for this album cover.
Yeah, she looks all right to me, but I don't know if that's the one I.T. was telling us about or not.
isiahthomas 09-16-2004, 01:57 PM Yeah Kitt that's the album cover i'm talkin about. She looks like a kid from Africa in that picture hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. She is definitely ugly on that album cover.
Pitooey 11-22-2009, 11:48 AM I'm bringing back this old thread only because I watched a Supremes bio. on PBS today. (Taped)
When I saw The Supremes my head went down memory lane reminiscing the 3 singers singing I hear a symphony etc. Those were the days....... I enjoyed seeing Diana sing. She just mesmorized me as a young girl. They were dressed to the nines. Of course lots of stuff happened over the years but Diana is a gem. Her voice was beautiful. I'm forever glad for her success. I might just go out and buy some old Supreme music just to hear her lovely voice.
