I remember those cartoons in the late 60s when WOR-TV in New York ran them in the morning. Who could forget the opening with Costello bellowing "HEYYYY ABBOTT!!?" The cartoons featured the voice of Bud Abbott as himself and Stan Irwin as Costello.

Hanna-Barbera animated them, and RKO-General was their production partner
(that's why WOR in New York showed them in 1967-'68; Channel 9 was an 'RKO-General station') in association with The Jozak Company. Pretty good cartoons...but hearing Bud Abbott so gravelly and frail! He needed the money....

It was a first-run syndicated series that debuted in the fall of 1967. In fact,
many early Hanna-Barbera series premiered in the lucrative syndicated market
(HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, QUICK DRAW McGRAW, YOGI BEAR, WALLY GATOR,
TOUCHE TURTLE, LIPPY THE LION, MAGILLA GORILLA, PETER POTAMUS).
Usually, they were half-hour shows with a single sponsor (e.g., Kellogg's and
HUCKLEBERRY; Ideal Toys and MAGILLA). Among the exceptions were the five-
minute shows like TOUCHE TURTLE, WALLY GATOR, LIPPY THE LION, and
ABBOTT & COSTELLO (although in some markets these were expanded to a
half-hour, often on a children's show with a live host).

A few things about Bud Abbott during the period of those animated cartoons....

Bud's wife Betty said that making those cartoons was the best thing for Bud during his later years. He had suffered a stroke and his speech was somewhat thick and slurred (you can tell that in the cartoons), but providing the voice for those cartoons gave Bud a reason to get up in the morning. Betty said how she loved watching Bud tying his tie and combing his hair in front of the mirror (still looking very dapper), getting ready for a day at the studio.

Because of his stroke, sometimes you couldn't understand what Bud said when he spoke a line....his speech wasn't clear. Whenever that happened, the director and recording engineers never humiliated Bud by saying "We couldn't understand you....Read that line again!". Instead, they would blame the necessary re-take on a technical problem with the equipment: "Bud, we had some trouble with the mike and we didn't get that last line....Could you do it again, please?". From all reports, Bud Abbott was treated with the utmost respect and dignity during the making of those cartoons.

If only the finished product had been a little better....

I remember watching Bud Abbott being interviewed while he was in a supervised home somewhere in or near Hollywood. This had to be in the late 60's or early 70's - sometime before his death in 1974. Lou had died 15 years before in 1959.

He spoke of the breakup of himself and Lou - which brought tears to his eyes and mine. He came across as a very sincere and likable man. All in all, it wasn't the sad day for me as it could have been. He still looked slim, dapper and sharp.

I still miss their tv show - the one with Sid Fields, Hillary Brooke and others

I have the complete run of this cartoon, it's not great, but hey, I love anything A+C.
