View Full Version : Smoking in sitcoms
jamesanthony 09-09-2004, 06:15 PM Other than Whoopi Goldberg last season is there a character in a recent show that regularly smokes? There was a character on the X-Files who smoked nd was named accordingly. Smoking has become a lot less common on TV. I remember on I Love Lucy it seemed that the only time Lucy didn't smoke was when she was pregnant. Archie Bunker smoked in the 70s. Two shows from the late 60s that I recall were Get Smart and Mission:Impossible. In the former Don Adams smoked all the time in the first 3 years and seemigly not at all in the last 2. In Mission most of the regular cast in the first 4 years smoked but after 1970 none of them did, although guest stars who played villians would.
I believe that the FCC banned cigarette commercials from TV in 1970.
Penny Lane 09-09-2004, 07:10 PM Rob And Laura Petrie
Darin Stephens and Larry Tate
Lucy and Ricky
Millie and Jerry Helper
Andy Taylor
They all smoked. It was not unusual back then.

I didn't know Laura Petrie smoked. Not too many female characters smoked on TV. Did Lucy smoke in The Lucy Show? I don't think she did on Here's Lucy. Barbara Bain smoked a lot in Mission Impossible but that was a drama not a sitcom.
Yeah I know smoking was very common on TV in the 60s but I was wondering about characters from the last 10 years or so.

Yes, I remember one episode in particular that Laura smoked. She and Rob were in the car going home after dinner and Rob asked Laura if she wanted a cigarette. She replied that yes, she would love one.
No, Lucy didn't smoke in any of her later series' that I know of.
barwars 09-09-2004, 09:06 PM Rebecca Howe smoked on Cheers.
Also.... (cigar) smoking was done a lot on Cheers, Frasier and Seinfeld.
spunkygirl 09-09-2004, 09:30 PM this probably doesn't count, but Chandler on Friends smoked, not regularly he quit then started again, then quit then started again
Adamantium 09-09-2004, 10:20 PM Bill McNeal was a smoker on "NewsRadio." They even had an episode where he tried to quit, but couldn't. However, his fourth to last episode, Bill did stop. First he went to tobacco and then to the Patch.
James 09-10-2004, 02:20 AM On The Wonder Years, two-episode character Cara (Episodes #70 and #92, specifically) was a smoker.
Petrie Malone 09-10-2004, 03:05 PM Rob, Laura, Sally, and Alan from the Dick Van Dyke Show smoked occasionally. I'm not sure about Mel or Buddy, but the entire cast did cigarette commercials for Kent. (Some of the commericals can be found on the DVD sets as bonuses and easter eggs.)
Penny Lane 09-10-2004, 03:30 PM Roseanne smoked cigarettes in one episode and marijuana in another:lol:
Lady T 09-10-2004, 10:51 PM Ron Harris and Nick Yemana both smoked on Barney Miller
Dean Winchester 09-10-2004, 10:55 PM Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) was an on-again, off-again smoker on Sex And The City, I think she finally quit smoking for good around season 4.
Don Johnson as Sonny Crocket smoked in the early seasons of Miami Vice, and then quit. I think the producers, or whomever, asked him to quit because he had become such a pop icon. I guess they thought he was setting a bad example in a time that smoking was being hit hard as being the bad habit that it is. Hard to say if the Miami Vice producers had the best interests of their audience in mind, or if they thought that Crocket's smoking might put him in disfavor of the audience. I for one was pleased that both Sonny and Don ,lol, quit.
I honestly have not been able to recall any currently running main characters who smoke. Does HBO count? I think some of the characters on Six Feet Under smoke. Probably some on the Sopranos also.
On MTV's Real World an astounding amount of the little brats ;) in all of the various editions of the show smoke.
rossnrach4ever 04-08-2005, 02:39 AM Carrie Bradshaw smoked at the beginning until she dated Aidan...she also shared cigarettes with her lover Big and Stanford
Chandler smoked whenever he was stressed...he smoked when he was in Tulsa because he actually lit up in front of Monica during a fight.
and I don't know if it counts or not...Ross smoked pot in college....
Belair 04-08-2005, 04:29 PM There was an episode of The Nanny where Fran smoked briefly.
rossnrach4ever 04-08-2005, 11:57 PM I forgot an episode of the Partridge Family where Reuben was trying to quit smoking and Danny was going on a diet...also for friends ...rachel tried to smoke when she first got hired at RL ...to fit in....also joey's late agent estelle smoked....heavily....
rossnrach4ever 04-09-2005, 12:00 AM I guess if we are saying favorite, Emma...she is so sweet and the best little baby...that poor kid though if she ever finds out about half the stuff her parents have done ...well can we say scarred...
gidgetgrape 04-09-2005, 12:03 AM Roseanne tried to quit smoking in season 4 of Roseanne.
treky 04-09-2005, 02:45 AM this is offtopic: but my girlfreind smokes, and I WISH she'd stop!
(she is trying; though; and she only does it every now and then)
Carrie on The King of Queens also smoked on some episodes.
catlover79 03-05-2007, 08:33 PM All the guys on Bewitched smoked like chimneys. It makes me sad to see Dick York light up on camera, knowing that one day he'd die of emphysema. :(
Harris and Yemana both smoked on Barney Miller, as someone else pointed out. I think there was a bet between them that Harris would give up smoking if Nick would give up betting. :)
Tia and Tamera smoked in an episode of Sister Sister. They kept it up a couple of weeks and decided to give it up (along with their friends) at the same time Ray and Lisa found out.
joan davis fan 03-06-2007, 02:21 AM There was an episode of Alice where Vera smoked. It was the episode where the characters were giving up their nasty habits. In Vera's case she took up smoking after attending a Bette Davis film festival.
For the record, ads for cigarettes were banned on 1/1/71 even though a few TV stations like Baltimore's WJZ-TV and Pittsburgh's KDKA actually banned them as early as 1969. I think they were banned in Canada even earlier than that.
Ads for cigars I think were taken off the air either in the late 70s or early 80s
while ads for smokless tobacco such as chewing tobacco were banned in 1986.
Heather987 03-06-2007, 02:33 AM The Cosby Show - Vanessa had a friend over that smoked in one episode and Theo said he and Cockroach smoked and got busted (not sure if that was another episode or not that showed them smoking or just a reference)
Roseanna- Darlene smoked in one of the early episodes, again when Roseanne went to visit her at college when she was with Jimmy
Roseanne started smoking in one episode and quit in the same one, smoked pot with Dan and Jackie
Mark smoked when he was dating Becky but never saw him after they were married
That 70's Show - They showed the kids in the circle smoking pot or supposed to be, Kitty smoked I believe
Married with Children - Peggy smoked occasionally
Other characters off the top of my head that either smoked or tried it....
Rachel on Friends and her boss/co-worker
Chandler - Friends off and on
Brenda - 90210 for at least one episode
Valerie - 90210 for at least one episode maybe a few others dont remember
Phoebe - Friends in a what if episode
The oldest boy on Home Improvement smoked Pot - was not onscreen but admitted to doing it and had a stash hidden
Greg on the Brady Bunch tried it and one of his friends I think also did (okay not so much a newer show though)
Stephanie - Full House when she went to Junior High and maybe her friends I think at least in one episode
Jamie - Mad about You admitted she quit smoking to get pregnant dont remember if she did it on camera though
Many reality show people
Gimme A Break - The father smoked a pipe I think or maybe a cigar
Steve Douglas on My Three Sons smoked a pipe.
Scoobiedoo30 03-06-2007, 03:33 PM Archie All in The Family
catlover79 03-06-2007, 03:34 PM Did Ward Cleaver smoke?? I don't think so, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it was Mr. Rutherford.
Did Ward Cleaver smoke?? I don't think so, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it was Mr. Rutherford.
It seems like there were a few episodes that showed him smoking, Ward that is. I can't remember about Fred Rutherford.
mrsmatthewperry 03-10-2007, 08:21 PM Yep Chandler smoked also Rachel smoked in one episode and so did Ross and Mon's dad. Mon's ex Richard smoked cigars.
Mr. Lawrence, Gidget's dad, smoked a pipe.
Janice 03-15-2007, 12:23 AM Dr. John Becker of Becker smoked regularly.
Zebra 3 04-02-2007, 02:18 PM Yeah I know smoking was very common on TV in the 60s but I was wondering about characters from the last 10 years or so.The 60s sitcom Hogan's Heroes (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=71) which was set mainly in a German WWII POW camp had a fair amount of cigarette and cigar smoking.
The 70s crime drama Kojak (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=575)'s Lt. Theo Kojak was a heavy smoker which at times would substitute it with his trademark lollipop.
The current crime drama The Shield (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=523)'s Det. Shane Vendrell and Capt. David Aceveda are cigarette smokers.
The current Canadian sitcom Bob Gratton: ma vie, my life's Méo always has a cigar in his mouth.
The current Canadian mockumentary Trailer Park Boys has all kinds of smoking.
Dr. Thong 04-02-2007, 06:46 PM Yep Chandler smoked also Rachel smoked in one episode and so did Ross and Mon's dad. Mon's ex Richard smoked cigars.
I know Joey lit up one time practicing for an audition, which prompted Chandler to start smoking on one of his on again/off again smoking jags.
Phoebe smoked in the alternate universe episode.
Rachel indeed smoked trying to fit in at Ralph Lauren.
Monica lit up one of Richard's cigars after they broke up.
So Ross is the only character I don't remember smoking. In real life, David Schwimmer was the only cast member who didn't smoke.
catlover79 04-02-2007, 06:57 PM Didn't Lou Grant (MTM) smoke, too? I'm pretty sure Murray did.
Kristen 04-03-2007, 05:05 AM Didn't Lou Grant (MTM) smoke, too? I'm pretty sure Murray did.
You see him and Murray smoking cigars at Rhoda's wedding (not the wedding itself, during the rehearsal dinner the night before!). I don't think you ever saw him smoke on TMTMS, although I'm sure there were refrences to it.
- Kristen
I seem to recall Mel on the tv show Alice smoking a cigar on some of the shows.
Coffeecup 04-05-2007, 05:05 PM Not a sitcom but a drama. Columbo with his cigar.
Scoobiedoo30 04-12-2007, 04:56 PM Bobby In King of Hill smoke a Cigarette infact the episode is airing tonight at 5:00 pm Central Time on FX
Zebra 3 04-13-2007, 04:43 PM Bobby In King of Hill smoke a Cigarette infact the episode is airing tonight at 5:00 pm Central Time on FX
Not only Bobby smokes in the episode Keeping Up With Our Joneses, but his parents Hank and Peggy as well and their crazy neighbour Dale smokes regularly.
noveel 04-13-2007, 07:27 PM The main character smoked a pipe once a Major Dad
Also on Alice, Vera took up smoking after going to a Bette Davis Film Festival.
Dr. Thong 06-25-2007, 07:02 PM Also on Alice, Vera took up smoking after going to a Bette Davis Film Festival.
Good thing Bette wasn't smoking crack in those movies.
catlover79 06-25-2007, 07:06 PM James Evans Sr. of Good Times carried a pipe with him on occasion, but I don't know if he ever smoked on camera. Willona smoked in one episode - the one where she and Florida go to the bar. That's also the episode where Flo meets Ben.
On Seinfeld, George smokes in front of Susan and chokes when he tries to inhale.
Scoobiedoo30 06-25-2007, 09:14 PM Archie in All in The Family
catlover79 06-26-2007, 01:28 AM David Kane (One Day at a Time) smoked in a couple of episodes.
blue4t 06-26-2007, 07:07 PM Seinfeld: Kramer becomes addicted to cigars and it ends up ruining his looks. Another episode, he brings in Cubans to make cigars and they end up being Dominicans.
Gemini_89 04-11-2016, 09:20 PM Facts of Life:
Jo smoked a cigar in the episode, "Just My Bill", they didn't show it but it was implied. I doubt it was her first time either. It just fits in with her character anyway....
