View Full Version : Annoying Edited Opening Theme Songs

When a sitcom appears on syndication or cable TV, their opening theme song is often cut down to 15-30 seconds from the original broadcast length.

Good Times, The Golden Girls and Family Ties shows are like that. Does anybody else hate this? What other syndicated sitcoms are there, where the opening theme is chopped in half?

"Full House" had the most annoying edited opening theme song for seasons 1-7 in syndication. "The Golden Girls", "Family Ties" and "Sex and the City" (TBS version) has it. I go with the full openings, I think.:)

yes. TBS butchers the opening credits, it doesn't even have the opening shot of Sarah Jessica looking away from the camera, and doesn't start until "HBO Presents", and it seems rushed too.

With "Cheers", sometimes the opening theme song would begin with the chorus section: "Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name...."

:cuss: Boy Meets World!!!!!!!!!! Disney doesn't even use the Seasons 1-3 openings, they use the Season 4 opener for Seasons 1-3 which makes no sense, cause the Seasons 2 and 3 opener are shorter than the Season 4 opener

N@N does that with Who's the Boss? They use a syndicated version every so often, they don't use it alot though

I have the "Sex and the City" DVD's with the long HBO opening before TBS butchered it.

 yep sure do ;)

 I love the first season opener :)

It's weird with Disney using the 4th season opener, cause it shows the second Morgan for a season that has the first Morgan

I prefered the early Morgan.
BMW is one of my favorite series, but the themesongs weren't all that good IMO.
The Season 5-7 wasn't too bad, but the others, blah.

I like second Morgan better, she IMO fit the role better.

I like all the openers, but Seasons 5-7 are my fav :D

personally, i'd rather they cut the credits/opening than cut scenes, but the one that irks me the most is when Bosom Buddies started using the closing song for the opening instead of Billy Joel's "My Life"

:cuss: When USA carried Bosom Buddies they had a different song as the opening song, the song went something like this, "When You Try To Shake The Blues" and it was sung by a female singer. I used to watch Bosom Buddies in reruns years before on a local station and they did use Billy Joel's song, "My Life" as the opening song. I also remember the closing theme being an instrumental of "My Life" as well.

I have that song "My Life" from the Billy Joel CD. I also heard that song on the radio too.:) That was the theme to "Bosom Buddies".

me too, it seems like TBS took a 40 second opening down to 18-20 seconds, they really rush through the credits.

How about the opening theme to Perfect Strangers, when they took out the part that went "No matter what the odds are this time, nothing's gonna stand in my way! This flame in my heart, a long lost friend, gives every dark street a light at the end!" (or similar)?

OK, here's a REAL annoyance: Remember the 1980-81 show I'm A Big Girl Now? There were some words that were eliminated just before the last part that started "The games I played". This was back in the EARLY EIGHTIES!!!

I remember when TBS aired it (and Oxygen earlier this year for a two-day marathon), they used the My Life theme song with a instrumental version of When You Try to Shake the Blues as the closing.

On the subject of "My Life," I listened to a sample of the Bosom Buddies theme on this site and it's definitely not the original version by Billy Joel, even though some people think it is.

Now maybe it's my memory playing tricks on me, but I could have sworn they used a 60-second cut of the Billy Joel version when I watched the show as a little kid (including the "I never said you had to offer me a second chance" portion of the chorus).

So here's my question - did they originally use an edit of the Billy Joel verison and have to stop using it for legal reasons later on, or did they start out with the newly-recorded version by the other artist?

Here's a comparison of the two.

My Life - Billy Joel (http://home.comcast.net/~aka909walrus/mylife.mp3) (1978)
My Life - Lame rendition from Bosom Buddies; artist unknown (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/sounds/BosomBuddies1.wav) (1980?)

That Bosom Buddies talk reminds me of another show. When "Get a Life" aired on USA in 2000, they did not use REM's "Stand" theme song. Not sure why, maybe for legal reasons. I HATE legal reasons. They keep us from enjoying TV shows and TV on DVDs.

the "lame-edited-non-Billy-Joel" version was what they originally used (at least that's the version that I recognize) - but it was still WAY better than "Shake it Loose", the song they use in current syndication eps, and originally appeared as the instrumental closing theme.

Ah, okay, thanks. I guess you just can't always trust your memory from when you were little.

And I agree. That "Shake It Loose" crap is horrible.
