Hey, anyone who wants GMail, I have 6 invites to get rid of. It is Google's beta e-mail system and it rox! You get 1000MB of space (Yahoo gives you 100, Hotmail gives you 6...)

Well, I love it. It came (for me) at a great time because my parents are switching ISPs and on sept 9th, my satx.rr.com e-mail won't work anymore.

Thanks in advance!! they dont have the greatest instructions in laymans terms, but:

to setup your email client to use the program use the following settings:

POP3 server (incoming mail): localhost
SMTP server (outgoing mail): localhost

username: your gmail username (without the @gmail.com)
password: your gmail password

So all I have to do is type in "local host?" Please excuse me for my ignorance, but I am most definitely illiterate when it comes to these things, LOL! :lol:

But if this is the case, it didn't work. :( it should just be "local host" (or 127.0.0.1), but there could be a number of reasons why it might not work - which email client are you using, do you have a firewall or router? do you have any other programs that might use or block the pop3/smtp port? do you access the internet through a proxy? does your Antivirus scan email traffic?

You might try looking for any of those as possible problems, or look through the help forums for the program, at http://jaybe.org/forums/ (i'm really not the expert on this topic)

I just noticed that I have about 150 invites to GMail if anyone's interested....

GMail probably WILL go public in the next couple of months (if not sooner) - but if you want to get an account NOW send me a PM.

For what it's worth, if you go to Google.com in Internet Explorer, you have a random chance of getting a link to a free Gmail invite.

I've YET to see a link come up during ANY Firefox/other session - leading me to believe Google isn't offering them to alternative browser users since, well, if you're using an alternative browser chances are you're technically inclined enough to already be within the Gmail circle

I tried to get "loismustdie@gmail.com" when it first came out, but it was already taken. :(

its totally free - there is no money you have to pay, and the big deal is that it isn't the same pushy overated Hotmail (which hasn't been any good since MS bought it out) or Yahoo!

you don't HAVE to use the space, but why not take advantage of it?

Yahoo! gives users 250MB mail storage, same as Hotmail. :) Hotmail had 2MB for quite a few years before the e-mail expansion in September 2004.

I got Gmail to work in my outlook express. I can send and receive messages from outlook.
Also somehow I got 50 invites, I sent some out and it went back up to 50, anyone know why that is?

I absolutely LOVE Gmail, honestly. I've had netscape, aol, and yahoo in the past and they don't compare to Gmail IMHO. Plus, I love the Gmail notifier- it's similiar to AOL where you get alerted of new mail(not a voice that says "You got Mail!" but it lights up blue and a snippet of the thread will pop up, telling you who it's from and a tiny bit of the convo). I think that's so cool. However, the pop up goes down right away(like, it won't stay there until you check it) but the icon will remain blue until you check it.

Plus, you get a lot of storage, you don't HAVE to delete anything(anything in your trash will be deleted automatically after 30 days, but I like to delete it right away anyway), and you can "star" conversations(groups of emails from certain people) and file them away to look at later. I love it.

I have enough email accounts thank you. In fact this reminds me. I had better check my Yahoo account. I haven't checked it in weeks! It has probably been discontinued. I never used it anyway! :lol:

My first Yahoo account was 6MB. The other 3 I got later were just 4MB. Now they're all 250MB, and the highest I've gotten to is 6%.

Just PM me your name(first and last) and email addy(preferablely a different one than you used the first time or it probably won't let me)....maybe Gmail was undeveloped last year(didn't it just come out recently too?) and it may have had a few bugs. The people who are in charge of Gmail, + the people who got invites.

The invites are free - all they need is your name and your current email, then the invite gets sent to that email and you can sign up for a Gmail account from there.

I have two accounts - I first signed up w/ Gmail in June of last year, and now I have 100 free invites left.
