The series started it's run with Fonzie already knowing Ritchie. Way later on when they switched to live audience they had a flashback ep when the two characters first meet.

Richie "meets" the Fonz in his sophomore year - they show it in a flashback in episode #109 - Our Gang, which is in the fifth season

The episode was when Fonzies younger cousin (Chachi) Scott Baio wanted to join a gang claiming that his cousin Fonzie was once in one. Richie was concerned and told Chachi how stupid it was and set Fonzie example of how he met Fonzie and convinced him that his gang was using him. It was set in what we technically call a flashback sequence to 1957 ish.

The character of Ralph Malph also was introduced by Richie and at the time his best friend, Potsie as a new kid in the neigborhood.

Fonzie enters Arnolds with his his gang the Falcons and tells Richie to move from his table; the famous center booth at Arnolds. The story moves on as written that Fonzie wanted to rumble Richie and his friends in an alley. Of course the other two bonded by chickening out, Richie decides to face up to the Fonz and the rest is history between the characters.

Mind you, when the series started we picked up with Fonzie just making a few appearances and befriending Richie in many of those same situations. Fonzie, adjusting to a new and respected form of life that he didnt have before. The flashback episode was a classic because the cast had to dress like ( Richie with his lunch box) and act a few years younger then they were in the present setting of that season 5 which was set just about late 1959 early 1960.
