show could have did without? Even though Ralph was pointless to me, he wasn;t seen that much and was funny sometime but i really think there was no need to create a character for George's Mother. We didn't see Louise's mother so why did we need to see George's mother? I don;t know who idea it was to add Zara Cully to the cast but it was defintely a dumb idea. The show could have defintely did without Zara Cully.

She did add a dimension to the show in that no other character got on Louise's last nerve the way she did. She's one of those characters that the viewers liked to dislike and she made George look likeable in comparison. The only problem was that Mike Evnas shouldn't have been pushed to the side the way he was when the series started. He should have been in every episode and should have at least appeared in the main titles.

I know, Mike Evans should have been in the opening credits since he, sherman ad isabel was in all the CBS Press Release Photos in 1975 when the show first aired.

Mother Jefferson. She didn't really add anything to the show.

I think they should've had Ralph and Mr. Bentley be one character, with there characteristics melded together.

I personnally liked every character on the show, but although Mr. Bentley was my favorite of the 3 listed -- he didn't add very much. He made the show better IMO, but it couldve definately worked without him.

I guess between the three...which is a hard choice...i would say mother jefferson because she worked my nerves just as she worked Weezy's.

I thought Mother Jefferson added a lot to the show especially the way she worked Louise's nerves. It was so underhanded and sly the way she would put Louise down. I found her character to be quite funny.

As for Mike Evans in the first season he was in the opening credits. He should not had been pushed aside. There would had been some good storylines between him and Jenny along with the Jefferson's and Willis' as well. It would had been nice for Mother Jefferson to have a love interest which they somewhat toyed with by way of Tom's father. That would had been interesting to watch George act out if that was to happen.

The only thing the show could have done without is the friendship of George and Tom. They were not funny together and they were unwatchable together. George's mellowing out was not easy to watch. The last five seasons, especially the last three, were not entertaining to watch. The character of Louise became more snobbish and self righteous. I love the character when she wore those hairbun pieces before she started wearing wigs and dressing more fancier.

I did not like Ralph nor Mr. Bentley. In my opinion those characters were too much and was on too much.

I didn't like Mother Jefferson when I was growing up when the show was in production but in hindsight she added a lot to the show in that she was like the villian of the series (she was worse than George in a way). I liked Bentley, Ralph was unlikeable but he added something to the show. Mike Evans was wasted in this series; no wonder he quit twice. As for Louise she did become much more snobbish as the years passed on, but in a sense I think that that change in her character and the George/Tom buddy thing were not that unrealistic considering how long the show played out. Louise would eventually begin to revel in her luxurious lifestyle and George would get more enlightened or whatever. Sherman Hemsley didn't like playing a racist so he influenced the change in the character.

Overall the show did get worse but I'd rather watch those mediocre last few seasons than any sitcom on the air now.

Ralph, the doorman.
