sure why not? As is Arrested Development. I like sitcoms revolving around families, but not so much sitcoms that dumb down so a 7 year old can watch it and the parents won't be worried (ala Full House and most of the current batch of Disney shows)

Me too. ABC used to have the best family sitcoms around during the TGIF lineup. I also chose NBC because back in the old days of radio, NBC used to have shows that it was on the radio at the time before TV came along. One of the best radio sitcoms of the 40's during the golden years of NBC was "The Great Gildersleeve", "The Aldrich Family" and "The Life of Riley".

ABC, you've named all the family sitcoms basicly lol

but i have to say "Reba" on the WB is great

saying "The Simpsons" is a family series is like saying "Married With Children" is, sorry but they arn't, they might be sitcoms based on families, but family sitcoms are ones a family can watch together IMO Simpsons is not one of them.

If it wasn't for The Simpsons, when it comes to comedy, we'd be stuck with garbage like Full House.

Most of us who were kids when the show started watched it, so I don't see how it's NOT a family show. When the Simpsons started, it was geared to kids... and then it got more and more adult.

The reason I hate the simpsons so much , although I have been no part of this argument , is because It is getting worse , you gotta know when to stop. 16 Series is it now? Bart Simpson has been in the same grade for 15 Seasons , Each episode must represent 1 day!

I used to watch it when it came out (I guess I was a bandwagoner myself back in the day), but today I do not like the glorification of violence--the Itchy and Scratchyland episode in October 1994 was the first thing that gave me the desire to stop watching. I'll take Tom and Jerry--a REAL cartoon--any day (granted, it had some violence). Also, the X-Files (a show I never liked, BTW) spoof in January 1997 with Burns singing Oliver's "Good Morning Starshine" was pretty much the nail in the coffin. I don't understand why the media still praise this long worn out show.

One thing I read recently is that the Simpsons in one episode traveled to Dayton, Ohio (where I live!), but the local newspaper made no mention of it whatsoever. Just goes to show you ...

If it wasn't for The Simpsons, when it comes to comedy, we'd be stuck with garbage like Full House.

Full House is better IMHO. Not as good as Leave It To Beaver or Green Acres, mind you! Call me nostalgic!

Chambers

James, if you think there's glorification of violence on The Simpsons, then you don't get it. It makes fun of the glorification of violence in a way that'll actually make the audience think.

very true, I was in the fourth grade when Simpsons premiered in the 1989-1990 tv season. Everyone in my class loved the show. Some parents thought Bart was a bad role model for children, but still that first year (and maybe even the second) The Simpsons was mostly popular with kids... and then parents and other adults started watching the show, and as the balance in it's fanbase shifted, the show became more and more adult. But when the series originally started, it's following was mostly kids. There was the "Do The Bartman" music video and everything.

Bart items were everywhere and the items were basically ones for kids... whereas now a lot of the Simpson merchandice are ones adults can enjoy as well. I think the show shifted around season 3 when Homer replaced Bart as the true breakout character of the show.

no it wasnt i remember very well. it was always ment for an older crowd but kids tuned it. that doesnt make it one.. I remember one episode Bart went to a bar and bent over smacking his butt. yeah that's a great kids show,

anyways, EW refers to Simpsons as an "all age" cartoon, where as they don't FOTP, please.. That's bull. There is NO way FOTP is any worse with sexual jokes and whatnot

well, I think when they say "All Age", they mean it's a cartoon that ADULTS can also enjoy. Something like Pokemon really doesn't have a hardcore adult fanbase... while you'll see plenty of people in their 20's and 30's who have no children that are huge Simpsons fans.

that still doesnt make it one, *whistles*

because if it does then Beavis & Butthead was kids/family toon wasnt it? Kid shows like BMW might of referenced it (along with kids watching) but it's another case of a cartoon not ment for kids

it's kinda like X-Rated Material, it's not ment for kids but yet they watch or view it. obviously simpsons isnt that bad lol but i think you get what i mean

In my mind, A Family Sitcom is one a family can watch TOGETHER and was MADE for the the family.

You can't compare Beavis & Butthead to The Simpsons. B&B was made for the MTV generation - it may be fun, but it's hardly a "good" show that attracts people of all ages.

The Simpsons is great family viewing. It has several layers of humor. The kids like its cartoonish humor, its physical comedy, etc. The adults appreciate the depth of the show and its sophisticated humor. In just one scene, Homer gets his head stuck in the banister while Lisa quotes Pablo Nerruda (well, I don't quite remember what the scene was like, but it was something like that). There's something for everybody in that show. Even if you don't get all of it, you'll still be able to enjoy it. That's why it's perfect for families.

08-29-2004, 08:38 PM

B&B was made for the MTV generation - that is, teenagers and young adults.

The Simpsons was NOT made just for the MTV generation.

Matt Groening's thoughts:
"There's plenty of great, very funny stuff being done for immature adults, but there's nothing smart and funny for kids out there."

He created a show that could appeal to kids and adults. For me, that's what a family sitcom is. Not just a show that appeals to kids - but one that also appeals to adults.

gOoSe
08-29-2004, 09:01 PM
young adults are OLDER than 11 year olds. and im talking about the MTV generation back then, in the early 90's.

Family shows are created for the family and if its a true family show most families won't get offended. PERIOD!

Now show me something in the simpsons besides the creator's thughts that can prove it has plenty of kid and adult material. Not just adult material. Then maybe i'll agree.

watch most of the first 2 seasons... there's a lot of episodes from the first two seasons that families could enjoy. Bart going into the "gifted school", the first Christmas episode, the Call Of The Wild Simpsons episode, Bart The General is a good show about kids standing up to bullies, several others. Kids and Parents can enjoy those episodes, but on different levels.

First Two Seasons huh? Maybe..
I suppose it's kinda like 7th Heaven - a family show that grew into a show about who's sleeping with who for a season. But now it's coming around..

Unfortuantly i have seen more jokes in "Simpsons" that are not exactly fun for the whole family. I just do not see the Simpsons as a family show at all.

But we all have different views on what a family sitcom really is don't we?

the reason I dislike 7th Heaven is because it is very preachy. The same people who champion it are usually the ones who complain to WB for airing Charmed, and these are the same people who refuse to watch Will And Grace because they're "morally offended" by the fact a tv show depicts gay characters as something other than background hairstylists.

The show is way too goody-goody, and it preaches a message that offends just as many people as who might be offended by Charmed's message or Will And Grace's (even tho IMO, W&G has no message... it's Friends with the men being gay). Plus, the times I've watched it, I felt like I was watching Full House minus the laugh-track and minus the Olsen twins.

but almost all shows at one time, tend to try to teach us lessons, even BMW has done it :)

To each their own, I have always liked 7th Heaven, to me it's like the Little House on the Prarie for the present day :)

BMW did teach lessons, but it wasn't force-fed like on 7th Heaven and Full House. But Full House redeems itself with a slight amount of comedy.

As for LHOTP.... I never liked that either.
If its not funny or suspenseful, its not for me.

Shows tend to try to teach you a lesson because the Lesson you are being taught is likely to be something you can relate to.

Actually, I Find alot of stuff on 7th Heaven to be quite funny. But since its a Drama its just harder for some to see the comedy in it.

ABC, I think at one point in the '90s they were known for their family comedies; it's no wonder why they launched ABC Family.

ABC, by far, gave us the best "family-oriented" shows like The Brady Bunch, The Wonder Years, Happy Days, Full House, Step by Step, Family Matters, among many others. No doubt about it, it's ABC.
