MulberryGal 08-26-2004, 08:37 AM Hey all,
I've been watching a lot of the earlier episodes recently as I got them on old videos and I started thinking that although the attraction between David and Maddie was obvious from day one, if you watch the episodes in order I also think that David really fell for Maddie very early on, almost from the pilot.
If you watch The Next Murder You Hear (series 1), David is jealous when Maddie is attracted by the dead radio host, and by the time we get to Brother, Can you Spare a Blonde (Series 2 opener) he is incredibly jealous of her feelings for Richie. This way before they even came close to kissing or anything else.
Perhaps that dance to Since I fell for you in the Pilot was the beginning of it for him. I don't think that Maddie actually fell for David until later tho even tho she found him attractive....
Any comments welcome!!

david&maddie4ever 08-26-2004, 11:11 AM That's a good point, Mul.
Dave was such a great character to me because, although he was supposed to be crazy and fun, he always seemed to know what he wanted out of his life before Maddie did. In that way, I think he was more mature than she was.
Sometimes Mads needed a little push, but I liked the fact that it took them awhile to establish that mutual feeling of love. It built up some great storylines for the show.
kismet 08-26-2004, 12:24 PM I definitely think he fell for her in the pilot.
She was intrigued by him in the pilot, but didn't fall for him like he fell for her.
He was a goner when she walked into his office, BUT he totally lost it in the dance scene in the bar.

Then comes marriage
Then comes a baby in a baby carriage...:happyface
It was like destiny was giving him a massage...
Dutchie 08-26-2004, 01:00 PM Yeah, it was def the Pilot. I could feel it in my stomach with that dance and the hug from Maddie when David saved her from the ladder aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw It was great!:D  :)
Tazmania 08-26-2004, 01:12 PM So funny! I just watched it again this week after a long time!
And YES! I definitely agree, he was swept of his feet when she walked in the first time in his office, but you could actually SEE him falling for her in the Bar, when they danced, the way he smelled her hair......aaah!
And what about the scene in the ofiice when they spend the night there, did anyone notice the 'LOOK' on Maddie's face for the first time, and he asks "why are you looking at me like that?" an she tells him she's surprised that he didn't ask her to come over to his place!
David: "Would you have gone for it? And then the silence.......
David:" 'course ya would have!"
She didn't say no, so in my opinion she was already getting 'there', if you know what I mean!
;)
Dutchie 08-26-2004, 01:15 PM where Taz? Where?
hehe:lol:
Tazmania 08-26-2004, 01:18 PM Look deeply into her eyes and you'll know WHERE!!

Great minds think alike, right Taz?! That's the scene when I think she became intrigued by him - with the harmonica, but I don't think she fell for him like he fell for her - but she definitely was interested.
kismet 08-26-2004, 01:35 PM How could he NOT fall for her in the dance scene in the bar?

Ok, about Maddie and David... I've always thought that Dave fell for Maddie before she fell for David. And you're right, you can see it since the pilot. And in her case, (I said this in another thread) I started to see her having real feelings for him in "Knowing her", when she was SO jealous about Jillian (Was that her name?). Maddie never shows her feelings, but you can definitly see her negative reaction about Jillian being with David. I also liked when he was spying this girl with the binoculars and Maddie makes him call her to apologize and when he starts asking this girl for a date Maddie hangs the phone, hehehe.
But there are a lot of moments to think of about this relationship, indeed. Too many, hehehe. Let's take it easy :D
Like everybody else has said, you saw the mutual attraction in the pilot, especially while they were dancing. But for David, it was in The Next Murder You Hear in the the bar when he admits he had hoped she would 'go' for him. Then in Brother, Can You Spare a Blonde? when he's watching Richie and Maddie dance. For Maddie, it was in Money Talks, Maddie Walks when they're flirting after they win the money and in the last scene when she tells Agnes she thought maybe she could 'show him a little piece of my heart.' By then they were both hooked.

MulberryGal 08-27-2004, 03:49 AM Yes CyBr! That was the point when I thought that maybe she cared too and it wasn't just one sided. I love Money Talks, Maddie Walks.. I LOVE ;) that bit where David leans in to kiss her and she just dodges him...but in a sweet way! sigh...
Another thing I noticed was that, Maddie was the one who showed him that she cared (like in "I'm glad you're my partner, partner" when she kissed him on the cheek in The Woman in the Iron mask). She did a lot of things like that in the early eps.

Dutchie 08-27-2004, 08:49 AM yeeeeeeeaaaaaah those early ones where the greatest. It wasn't that complicated back then:)
CindyK 08-27-2004, 01:31 PM I think this question was similar to a discussion that took place over on the message board at Moonligthing Central on this thread.
http://boards.eesite.com/board.cgi?boardset=smkmoon&boardid=b5&thread=6&spec=4637548
Where there were many really good answers posted.
From what I see in the episodes, David definitely fell hard, fast. Maddie was much more cautious....and it took a while for David to win her over. I think she liked him, thought he was cute....but was wary to trust him completely. It was sometime second season for her....because by the time the third season begins in The Son Also Rises...she "misses him."
Things obviously heated up a lot right from the start of the 3rd season and boiled over at the end. But I think we've listed lots of evidence that they each fell for the other as early as the beginning of the 2nd season (and David maybe even earlier).
Of course neither would ever admit it that early!
CindyK 08-29-2004, 02:05 PM So what did we decide here??? Who had the hots when and where? Or is this one of those what came first the chicken or the egg questions??
Tazmania 08-29-2004, 02:14 PM Pilot, David first
Maddie crossed the line in Witness.
adyjdy 01-05-2006, 03:40 AM I know this is an old thread... but I just discovered the forum, so I'm going to put in my two cents anyway. I don't think David fell for her as early as most of you seem to think. I've gotta say it was right around "Brother." That look on his face while Richie and M are dancing said it all. He had it BAD for this woman. Not only that, but the selfless act of borrowing $37K that I assume HE would have to pay back to his brother later... WOW! Interestingly enough, IMHO his moment of falling and realizing he's falling (not one in the same for these two characters as we all know) are in the same episode. I think David realizes he's got it bad when she hugs him to say thanks for the money and he resists, even cuts short her embrace. He has, "OMG, I'm in BIG trouble here!" written all over his face.
neon000 01-05-2006, 03:01 PM Interesting. I'd say it's obvious the way David feels in the dancing scene in the pilot. You don't act like that around somebody you sort of mildly feel okay about. ;)
While "Brother" really brings this to the fore with David again, there is also an intriguing little incident with Maddie in the same episode that may not seem to mean very much at first, as it's so understated, but I think is pretty important in hindsight:
Richard and Maddie are at M's house, and they're just done with their trivia game. It's the moment before David busts down the door.
M: Richard, I have a terrible confession to make.
R: Maddie...you've only known me eighteen hours. You can't be tired of me already...that would be a female land-speed record.
M: I'm not tired of you. I like you. It's...
R: David?
M: (nodding) David.
R: (resigned) David.

I think this is much more important than it first seems because, one, we know Maddie is much more secretive about her feelings than David most of the time, so if she says anything like that, you can go ahead and assume it must be pretty important to have finally come to the surface; and two, here she is saying that she won't be able to see Richard anymore, and look who's the reason! (Of course, Richard has not been forthcoming with the fact that he'll have to leave soon anyway, but Maddie doesn't know that yet so of course that can't be part of the reason.) So she cares about the possibility of David not being able to 'deal with' the two of them together. Or getting into a fight with him about it, or something. That's what it sounds like to me. Oho! :o Read even a third way, you may see it as the expression that she does not want there to be a barrier between her and David. Look at the phrase, 'terrible confession to make.' ;) She may be just exaggerating for the purpose of the apology, but still...in this show, everything has different layers of meaning.
I've seen that episode umpteen times, never thought much about or even really noticed that particular instance before, but when I watched it just a few days ago, I nearly jumped out of my chair.
adyjdy 01-05-2006, 10:45 PM Yeah, I don't quite know what to make of that scene. I'll be the first to admit that I really have trouble getting a read on Maddie and what she's feeling most of the time.
That said, I just watched this one last night, and caught something interesing. Did you notice that the day after the dinner with Ritchie, Maddie comes into the office, almost asks D how he feels about her and Richie get the money and then immediately leaves to go back home? She says, "I'm not going to hang around here today." Then why did she come in at all?!? Perhaps to see how D was feeling. Perhaps.
kismet 01-06-2006, 09:34 AM I have always thought that David was interested in Maddie the moment she said "Hello".
He wanted her when they danced in the bar. David wanted to plant some major kisses on Maddie's neck and lips. He was hooked - he knew they were made to be together.
He was in love with her by the time Brother Can You Spare A Blonde came along.
