Last I heard, he doesn't say whether he's gay or not so that the audience can believe any character he plays.

He talked about that on Letterman. He says that he doesn't tell whether he is gay or not because he want people to stay focus on the characters that he play on Will & Grace and other movies that he may be in.

I don't know if he is gay or not.

I would not doubt that he is gay in the least. I guess he didn't say it at first because he was afraid of typecasting, but look at him now. He and Megan Mullally are the two most typecasted actors appearing on any sitcom today. Who can see them playing anything else but Jack and Karen?

My guess? After W&G gets cancelled and the actors fade into oblivion (notice how none have done movies?), Hayes comes out and the world does a big "right, whatever," like after Rosie came out.

They've been in movies not huge blockbuster ones

If Sean Hayes was actually straight, he would say so when asked this question by the media. After all, what straight actor/movie star would decline comment when asked about his/her sexuality? Nobody of course.

Gay TV stars and movie stars don't have it as easy. Playing a gay part forever puts them in the gay stereotype role and they are never able to further their horizons as an actor because they aren't taken seriously in a straight role. Rupert Everit is the perfect example. You rarely see a part from him that isn't as the gay best friend.

There's not a doubt in my mind that he is gay. The Advocate, a popular gay magazine, has posted that the gay population has known that he is gay for years and when he finally has no choice but to come out, it will be old news.

We've had this discussion on here before I beleive and no one really knows. He won't answer that question and like many have said before he doesn't think that is important. But many people think he is by the way he is on talk shows and interviews. But we really don't know. and I guess he feels it is none of our business.

has nobody in here seen or heard of "Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss"? It was a movie Sean did pre-W&G (with goatee too) and he was gay in that as well. However, he was nowhere as flamboyant or over-the-top as he is as Jack.

I dunno if he's gay or straight, but there's a possibility he is if he was doing indie gay movies before tv.

I don't think it really matters. I mean, if he is gay, do we see him as a different person? As long as it isn't killing someone (and it can't literally kill someone) then it isn't doing any harm. I mean, if we knew he was straight, would it change our idea of his character? Or if he is gay, would it change our idea of him?

And Debra was in "Along Came Polly"... not a huge role, but the only reason why Polly came into the picture! LoL!

considering W&G is a show with several main gay characters, I don't see why if Sean Hayes came out and said he was gay would bother people. It's not like this is 7th Heaven or something else that might be right-wing Christian. People who watch W&G have at least somewhat of an open mind towards gays and lesbians.

either way, the performance is what matters. Cynthia Nixon from Sex And The City recently revealed she's a lesbian, but it doesn't change anything about her performance on the show.
