I believe the first season of Charmed is greenlighted for September 2005. The deal Paramount had with TNT over this show prevents a DVD release until Sept 05, after it has aired on TNT for 3 years exclusively.

Image seems to take one series at a time and just roll with it, with releases every couple months.
I like this strategy, although I wish theyd take something like 10 or 20 series at at time.;)

even tho it'd take longer to wait for for your show to be released... I like this idea better. As opposed to Columbia which floods the market with so many releases and then forgets about some of their titles like The Jeffersons and Mad About You

In a way, so do I. As long as its only one (or a few) companies that take this approach. But what I really like about it is that they already finished "my" show.

As for Columbia forgetting The Jeffersons and Mad About You.... don't get me started.
That includes The Larry Sanders Show too.

well, what doesn't make sense is that Columbia gave MAY a season 2 DVD release, and then abandoned it. At least release season 3 before abandoning the franchise, the third year was it's most popular ratingswise (it was like #12 that season) and a lot of fans regard that as it's finest season as well.

I think ALL shows started on DVD should finish. Not everything has the audience of a Simpsons or Seinfeld. If season 1 of a series sold 70,000... the company should assume those 70,000 will also buy season 2, and better yet, a season 2 will attract new purchasers who held out to be sure a second season will come. Mary Tyler Moore comes to mind, the show wasn't a huge seller (tho I'd like to know exact numbers, the way Fox makes it out was as if it sold in the single-digits), but Fox should assume that everyone who bought season 1 is gonna buy seasons 2-7 as well. No, MTM won't make Fox the DVD money that Simpsons, Family Guy and Buffy do, but it does have it's audience out there who demands it's release.

I agree with you all the way :) Every show is different, each show has different fanbases, etc...

I agree with you about every show that is released should get the whole series released.

It's kinda like movies in a way, there's been movies that have been released that flopped in theaters, they put it out on DVD, and eventually people discover the movie through DVD. Word of mouth is the best thing for DVD sales too :)

Yeah not every show is gonna have Friends or Simpsons sizes sales, that's unrealistic for companies to expect that from every show. More modern shows seem to sell better than older shows too :(

yep, every show has it's audience. Some shows like Simpsons sell over 1 million copies each season, and there are other shows like Sex And The City, Friends, Buffy and Sopranos that usually sell between 400,000-1 million each release. But there are a lot of shows out there that have a smaller audience, and deserve to get their fair treatment.

Especially since tv-on-dvd is beginning to replace syndicated reruns as a way to pick up new fans. I know a lot of people who are planning on getting the two-year-wonder POPULAR when it comes out on DVD, and these people are buying it on word-of-mouth from the fans of the show... and the show is probably never gonna run in syndication. Hell, look at the Family Guy, the show did so well on DVD that it guaranteed Fox a big enough audience that they've brought the series back. A lot of people will be the same way with smaller shows on DVD. There are people out there who might be getting introduced to Larry Sanders Show and Mary Tyler Moore on DVD, but because the sets weren't massive sellers, the rest of the series' got scrapped so the 50,000-100,000 fans who did buy them wound up getting screwed in the long run.

Columbia did try pulling that crap with Charlie's Angels after season 1 didn't live up to expectations, but luckily enough CA fansites held petitions that after enough persuasion, they got Coumbia to greenlight a season 2 release. Columbia spent less money promoting season 2, and they didn't bother putting any bonus features nor did it have the type of menus like season 1 had... but it still sold to that core 50,000 or so CA fans who bought season 1, and hopefully season 3-5 will be around the corner. So even if Charlie's Angels season 2 didn't have blockbuster sales, after downsizing from the promotion season 1 got, what CA s2 sold wasn't quite as disapointing because they had lower expectations.

What they did with Charlie's Angels is what should be done with all flagging DVD titles. The phenomenon shows like Simpsons, Family Guy, Friends, Sex And The City, Chappelle's Show and Seinfeld (well, it's not out yet... but I think it'll at least sell as well as Simpsons do, if not better) are very few and far between.

*sigh* Still no Whos the Boss? Season 2 or Facts of Life release. Colombia House has got to be the WORST DVD selling company ever. I dont see Diff'rent Strokes- Season 2 on there either  Full House and IDOJ arent on there either.
Im happy about Charmed, though

Diff'rent strokes Season 1 hasn't even come out yet, so Season 2 is probably a long way off.

Colombia Tri Star releases their shows about 5-8 months apart for each season, that's what they did for Sanford and Son, and I think Good Times there was a year between the Seasons 1 and 2 Releaseas.

I have a feeling we'll get FOL, IDOJ and others in the next few years :D

if Charmed has a SRP for $59.99 (usually $45-50 at places like Best Buy) which would be comparable to what Buffy, Angel, Roswell, Smallville and Dark Angel [all of which IMO are "contemporary" shows for Charmed], I'll definately get it, but knowing Paramount and how they love to jerk consumers around, especially if the show has a devoted cult following much like Charmed (look what they charge for Trek?), I think I'll only get the first 4 seasons.

Superstar

I guess it would be around 59.99

I don't think I'll get them at all for a while, I think the later seasons were better (but knowing me, I'll buy them on spur of the moment)

Dean Winchester

earlier we were discussing how bad Mad About You season 2 sold. I was at Best Buy earlier today in between classes and I noticed they had the two sets... they want season 1 for $24.99 and season 2 for $39.99. I guess with the $15 jackup in price, I can see why season 2 didn't sell so hot and probably killed the entire series on DVD. Especially since nowadays Columbia probably saw that misfire and now they make sure if one season retails for $30, all the seasons will, all the Sanford and Good Times sets go for $30, and probably so will One Day At A Time, Facts Of Life (though if they do a seasons 1 and 2 thing, it might be $39.99) and the remaining seasons of Diff'rent Strokes. Both season 1 and 2 of MAY were full-seasons, so what is the justification of season 2 being $15 more than season 1. Especially when you consider the second season of Three's Company has over four times the episodes of season 1, and it costs just double the price, and at places like Best Buy and DeepDiscountDVD is barely $10-12 more.

I think Buena Vista is trying to get a jump on other companies by having shorter release dates :)

well, it's not leaving in 2005 on TNT, it's one of their highest rated series.

The "contract" with TNT barred DVD releases for 3 years, it meant TNT was the only place to air Charmed reruns. Come fall 2005, it'll be okay for local syndication outlets to air it as well, and also the DVD's can come out.

I hope at least Ellen goes up to season 4 on DVD.

Even tho I am a huge outspoken gay rights person and I was rooting (I was just beginning to "come out" at the same time) for her when she came out, the last season was TOO propagandhic that even many gays and lesbian fans were turned off. The Puppy Episode (which was in s4) was a great and climatic episode, and the last 2 episodes of the season where she came out to her family and boss were needed. But it was just too much in season 5. Every episode was "Ellen gay this", etc.. The supporting cast which really helped make Ellen an ensemble series got the shaft.

At least Ellen herself has admitted she got a little out of hand and gone back to being "Funny Ellen" not "Gay Ellen"

I read that Fox is considering giving Mary Tyler More a second wind on DVD in 2005 by splitting season 2 into two half-priced sets.

However I find it funny that 85k MTM season 1's is a hugeflop while 55k DVD season 1's (it was on Home Theater Forum) is a success.

Lois & Clark to DVD in 2005?

I Emailed Customer Service a month ago and they finally got back to me this is what they said.

It's my understanding the Warner Brothers plans to roll out the Lois & Clark on DVD series sometime in 2005.What going on now is they are cleaning up the picture with a HD trans and remastering the audio in 5.1 digital for all 88 episodes.

If I weren't getting it for free, I probably would have passed on FH.

But IMO, FP and MB are must-haves.

Although Warner is smart by releasing shows that will be fresh in peoples' minds, I would've much prefered to see similar shows take their place. (seeing that these all will air on N@N at that time anyways)

For example....
instead of MB, release Night Court
instead of FP, release Family Matters
and instead of FH, release Step by Step

Facts Of Life season 1 (or a seasons 1 and 2 pack... I have faith we're going to see this on DVD in 2005)
Family Guy season 4 (think Fox and MacFarlane will rush this out for a Christmas 2005 release?)

Roseanne season 1
Roswell season 3 (wrapping it up)

I'm not sure about One Day at a Time, but it won't be in January. Maybe February or so, when the reunion movie airs. Oh yeah, Sanford & Son has been pushed back. Not sure when it will come out, but I'm guessing February. Tri-star only has two sitcoms coming in January.

And I guess you can edit in the "tentative" Brady Bunch dates:

S1: Feb TBD; S2: May TBD; S3: August 23; S4: November 22. S5 will be in 2006, probably in January.

That is so cool the Brady Bunch 3 months apart, Paramount is treating this show great :)

I'm not sure of the exact dates, but mostly all of the Paramount DVD's will be 3 months a part and some are usually on the same date or very close to it.

Here is something for everyone, MacGyver S1 is out Jan. 25!
MACGYVER: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON
Centering around the exploits of a former Special Forces agent named Angus MacGyver, MACGYVER: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON comes to DVD for the first time in a 6-disc box set that features all 22 episodes from the first season.

Angus MacGyver is a secret agent who refuses to carry a gun with him, but fortunately never needs one. Drawing on a vast practical knowledge of science, Macgyver is able to make use of anything around him to create solutions to any problem he faces. Underestimating MacGyver is a major mistake made by his enemies and always results in the destruction of their plans.

Full screen format; Dolby Digital English Mono; closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired..
Running Time: 17 hours 25 minutes

As for Diff'rent Strokes, haven't heard anything on its next set.

the best news for me (unless Columbia announces Facts Of Life and Fox announces a window for Roseanne) for 2005 was just mentioned today

Paramount plans to release season 1 of Charmed in Feb, season 2 in May, season 3 in August and season 4 in November. As far as I'm concerned, those 4 are the only worth having seasons. And they'll all be out by this time in one year!

Thank god I've got Charmed locked on ClassicTVHits, cause Paramount can be pretty pricey.

more than season 5?

I think a lot of people dislike 2 because of the whole "will Piper go for Dan or Leo?" thing now knowing she ends with Leo and not Dan, so they spent too much time on the storyline hoping for her and Dan

thank god, now Charmed marks the last of the "classic WB dramas" to be announced on DVD. Buffy, Angel, Roswell, 7th Heaven, Popular, Gilmore Girls, Everwood, Smallville, Dawson's Creek, etc... have all had head starts, tho I am kinda surprised we've never seen anything on Savannah considering George Eads' current popularity on CSI.

Cheers/Frasier have always been released on the same day. Taxi has recently been added to that agenda. But I think the others are just freak accidents. (although it probably costs less to ship this way)

It makes sense though. They should really consider a plan to offer a discount (that increases) with each one of their titles you purchase (two or more) on the same day.

Paramount is knowing what they're doing, I bet Charmed is on the same date thing too, and maybe Brady's too, since I know they're both coming out on a quarterly basis a year.

Fox has done this before, the first 5 seasons of Buffy and M*A*S*H were released day-and-date as well.

I don't have much info yet, but Warner is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and they will celebrate in style!! Feb, June, Sept and Nov 2005 they will release SIX sitcoms in EACH of those months. Among them are: Family Matters, Step by Step, Growing Pains, Alice, Head of the Class, Hangin' With Mr. Cooper, George Lopez, Chico and the Man, My Sister Sam and Welcome Back Kotter (drama wise Lois & Clark). Do not take the titles official until it is posted on TVShowsonDVD.com I hope Dave has some info on this tomorrow or in the coming days...

Perfect Strangers better be on this list, so far I don't see anything on it.

Pav, is there any info regarding if the 4th season of Good Times is going to be released soon? :)

Hell, they haven't even come out yet and I'm broke just anticipating it. Three shows I had in my top five in recent months have been announced, or are about to be announced, so I'm happy. I'll be really happy if I ever hear about my top two though.

I've gotta go to bed since I've got work in the morning, but with this news I'm too excited to sleep.

You did well actually. Four of the top eight on your most wanted list have been mentioned:

1. Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
2. Wings
3. Bosom Buddies
4. Night Court
5. Growing Pains
6. Step by Step
7. Silver Spoons
8. Family Matters

I know that those two were James Komack shows, and I see that he also produced Courtship of Eddie's Father. I wonder if that might come out too. Chico and Kotter both air on GoodLife, so that immediately jumped into my head, wondering if Courtship might come out also.

Anyway, I will be so broke it won't be funny. I still have a lot of OLD releases to buy as well.

I am beyond excited by Warner's releases but as Pav can tell you it's hard to get them before the release date to do a review. But still...

Chico and the Man? Growing Pains? Alice? WOW. I'm thrilled. 2005 is going to be THE year for TV on DVD! And this is just SITCOMS.

Looks like some of these will just be on one or two episode bonus discs:

I'm sure half of the list will have at least full season sets, but I'm not sure which. I guess we will have to wait and see for now, but the Feb, June, Sept and Nov dates will still have season sets of some shows along with the bonus discs of other shows (that will have one or two episodes each). I hope that it's still possible that the discs with the bonus episodes can also be used towards a discount for an eventual season set. For example, say if you get a disc of a couple of George Lopez episodes by buying a season set of Chico & The Man, because you have the Lopez bonus disc you'll get $5 off if a Lopez season set comes out. Basically I'm hoping that this promotion doesn't mean that just because a show will have only a couple of episodes on a bonus disc doesn't mean that a season set is out of the question.

If I don't get a full season set of Welcome Back Kotter I'm gonna have to hurt somebody.

Well, if they don't plan to release the bonus discs as full season sets, this is what "I" think will happen:

Full sets:
Family Matters, Step by Step, Growing Pains

Wouldn't be surprised if they get full sets or bonus discs:
Alice, George Lopez, Chico and the Man and Welcome Back Kotter

Bonus Discs:
Head of the Class, Hangin' With Mr. Cooper and My Sister Sam

Hopefully they release all the shows as season sets. I like vashti's theory. It would make sense to promote "similar" shows like George Lopez and Chico and The Man, Welcome Back Kotter and Chico and the Man, etc.

My enthusiasm for Welcome Back kotter and the others is starting to slip. The article on tvshowsondvd.com mentions that the bonus disc promotion is relating to the season sets Warner already announced (Murphy Brown, Fresh Prince, Night Court, etc.) and that there'll be 15 of these bonus discs made available throughout the year. I'm starting to be afraid that all these titles may just be bonus discs and not season sets:
Family Matters
Step by Step
Growing Pains
Alice
Head of the Class
Hangin' With Mr. Cooper
George Lopez
Chico and the Man
My Sister Sam
Welcome Back Kotter
Lois & Clark
plus 4 more

I hope I'm wrong in assuming that. Like I said earlier: If I don't get a full season set of Welcome Back Kotter I'm gonna have to hurt somebody.

I think they are releasing actual sets in Feb, June, Sept and Nov. Because the Feb sets are called "Wave 1." And they'll release the bonus discs for each month with similar shows. So, I'm sure the bonus discs for February will have shows that are related to the Feb shows. I think when Lois & Clark comes out, they will also release Adventures of Superman and probably give a bonus disc with shows like "The Flash." The short lived stuff will probably just get bonus discs.

Okay. I like the sound of that better. It did say from Warner's vaults, so maybe the bonus discs will focus on short lived/older shows. I hope that's the case, because as I said earlier: If I don't get a full season set of Welcome Back Kotter I'm gonna have to hurt somebody. :D

I was thinking:

The bonus discs are samples of the next wave of shows to be released.

Anyways.... Warner is giving Paramount a run for their money in terms of release scheduling.
Of the shows rumored/suppossedly coming out, I'm definately getting:

Family Matters
Step by Step
Growing Pains
Alice
Head of the Class
Hangin' With Mr. Cooper
George Lopez
Chico and the Man
Welcome Back Kotter
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman

So, basically, everything besides My Sister Sam, because I have no idea what it is.

If Warner is smart they will release stuff like this:

Family Matters, Perfect Strangers (since they are related), Hangin' With Mr. Cooper, Getting By (starred Telma Hopkins of Family Matters)

Head of the Class, Welcome Back Kotter, Chico and the Man, George Lopez, Courtship of Eddie's Father (school, hispanic, James Komack)

Lois & Clark, Adventures of Superman, Wonder Woman S2, more Smallville, The Flash (adventure/fantasy)

Growing Pains, Just the Ten of Us, My Sister Sam, The Hogan Family (all nice family stuff)

Step by Step, Dallas S2, Knots Landing, She's the Sheriff (Suzanne Somers/Patrick Duffy)

Alice, Flo, Dukes of Hazzard S2, 77 Sunset Strip, Maverick (rural, westerns)

I guess the short lived from those promotions would get bonus discs. Warner can really have fun with this.

lol, there is only 3 other waves though, and I came up with like 6 topics. I'm wondering what they could use for bonus discs for the first wave: Full House, Fresh Prince, Murphy Brown, Night Court, Jamie Foxx and Wayans Bros.

Let me try to figure something out, going with the pattern of 6 shows in one "wave"...

Wave 2 -
- Family Matters (bonus episodes of Getting By and Perfect Strangers)
- Perfect Strangers (bonus episodes of Hangin' With Mr. Cooper and Family Matters)
- Welcome Back Kotter (bonus episodes of Head of the Class and Chico and the Man)
- Chico and the Man (bonus episodes of George Lopez and Welcome Back Kotter)
- Growing Pains (bonus episodes of Just the Ten of Us & Hangin With Mr. Cooper)
- Step by Step (bonus episodes of She's the Sheriff and My Sister Sam)

I'm not trying for wave 3 and 4, this is way too hard to figure out...

barwars
11-12-2004, 04:43 PM
So what we're expecting (or hoping) to be released is....

Family Matters
Perfect Strangers
Hangin' With Mr. Cooper
Step by Step
Knots Landing
Growing Pains
Just the Ten of Us
The Hogan Family
Head of the Class
Welcome Back Kotter
Courtship of Eddie's Father
Chico and the Man
George Lopez
Lois & Clark
Adventures of Superman
The Flash
Alice
Flo
77 Sunset Strip
Maverick
She's the Sheriff
My Sister Sam
Getting By
Scarecrow and Mrs. King

And then shows that don't fit this particular plan, such as....
Wonder Woman - Season 2
Dukes of Hazzard - Season 3
Dallas - Season 3
Friends - Season 9
Gilligan's Island - Season 3
Smallville - Season 4
The Waltons - Season 2
ER - Season 3
AND.... all those Hanna Barbera releases

I wasn't sure about those, so I edited my post to get rid of "Season 1" and all that.

If the sample discs are done right, they should include either episodes of short-lived series featuring one of the cast members, or episodes of crossovers.

But I can't see that happening. Although I would buy them all, aside from The Flash.

I'll say this much, Lois and Clark fans won't accept anything less than season sets. I post at a Lois and Clark board, and I feel the same way they do, we deserve seasons sets, we've been waiting on season sets for a couple years now.

I agree, I'm just afraid WB will delay releasing Lois and Clark or something. If they wait till Smallville Season 4 comes out to release it, that could be the end of next year before we see it, cause Smallville Season 4 is airing right now on the WB. and Season 4 probably wouldn't come out till that season ends.

The Golden Girls was pulled off well, that looks very nice.

Full House however, has bad color selection, and bad design in general.
A cast photo would have been much better looking.

You're not the only one. I can think of 2 other people that are in agreement with you there, including me. The cover art SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! I just...I just don't like. I'll be getting it too, but I don't like the art. That is a really bad pic of John Stamos. :barf: And Bob Saget looks really creepy there...

I was hoping for a cast picture. :( Oh well, maybe next release. I have to admit the colors are fitting (although I don't agree with it either), as 1987 was their first season and the colors they used for the cover art was popular back then. Pastels became bright colors. :D

Full House however, has bad color selection, and bad design in general.
A cast photo would have been much better looking.

Yeah they should have used a cast pic, but that's how they all looked in the first season too. I would expect the Brady Bunch to be in squares on the DVD cover like they are in the opening of the show.

I like the GG cover, but they should have done like the Season 2 cover is gonna be(as to match more):

tvshowsondvd got it wrong. The list on Digital Bits didn't say Season 1, tvshowsondvd put it there.

They also got it wrong stating that Father Murphy Season 1 was a 5 disc set, but I have it and know that it's a 6-disc set. I sent them a message about it yesterday but they haven't corrected themselves yet.

According to davisdvd, the only other title part of Warner tv-dvd wave next year that hasn't been mentioned here yet is Max Headroom. So I'm assuming that everything listed below will be season sets and there will be other shows not on this list that will be on the bonus discs.

Warner Home Video is celebrating 50 years TV programming with a year-long celebration encompassing four major waves of TV-on-DVD releases. The first wave, due on February 8th, will include complete first seasons of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Full House, The Jamie Foxx Show, Murphy Brown, Night Court and The Wayans Brothers

Other new titles to look forward to in the coming year include, among others, 77 Sunset Strip, The Adventures of Superman (with George Reeves), Alice, Chico and the Man, Family Matters, The Flash (1990), The George Lopez Show, Growing Pains, Head of the Class, Lois & Clark, Maverick, Max Headroom, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Step By Step, Suddenly Susan and Welcome Back Kotter. Look for the next three waves of discs in June, September and November. Specially-marked sets will also contain a bonus commemorative compilation disc featuring episodes of never-before-released favorites. There will be fifteen separate volumes of these bonus discs in all. Stay tuned for more info on all the releases in the coming year.

OK, Alice is going to be released as a season set, YAAAAAAYYYY!!!! :)

I'm also looking forward to getting Growing Pains and Step By Step. I have a feeling that WB will do these sets right, with original network episodes instead of chopped up syndicated prints. That makes this all the more exciting.

Warner has been good with their Looney Tunes and other animated releases, so hopefully they have a good staff of people working on these shows to make sure they're the complete versions.

:woohoo: I"m def. getting Growing Pains, Step by Step, and #1 on my list is Lois and Clark.

Warner does seem to do good with DVD releases, I don't think they'll do syndicated prints, unless somehow for some show the originals are destroyed or something

I talked to Gord from TSoDVD.com and he told me this source is NOT reliable. So, do not take this information as accurate unless it is posted on TSoDVD.com I'm sure some of those sets listed above will not get full sets.

Though I'd look forward to a few of those, as long as Welcome Back Kotter is a sure bet for a season set release, I'll be content with that.

You're right. Davisdvd just posted this retraction:

I'd like to correct something I reported a few days ago. In a post on Warner's 50th anniversary celebration, I listed a number of titles that I said would be released throughout 2005. Unfortunately, however, I made a small mistake. After discussing it with a video retailer (and a reliable source in the past), I came to the conclusion that many of those titles actually may be the one-shot episodes that will be included on the compilation bonus discs to be packaged with selected season sets. Even though I always try to bring you the most accurate information, in this case I may have jumped the gun a bit. Early morning zeal got the better of me and for that I apologize. For now, I have removed the list of titles from that earlier post until official details arrive. With that said, I'm off to get flogged...
