I don't know why since the Stanley Roper character had great chemistry with Jack Tripper. Ralph Furley never had that same chemistry.

Me too.But what I liked about The Ropers is that they reminded me of the Bundys

well maybe they wanted a change so viewers would still stick with the show...if they got somone just like roper it would be too similar and maybe viewers would lose interest...dunno just guessing

Well I don't have an answer to your question but I like Furley just as much as the Ropers. :)

I like how they changed landlord "types" when they replaced the Ropers with Furley because it made the show more interesting. The roommates had drastically different relationships with their different landlords. I think if the producers had gotten another Roper-type character, it wouldn't have been as funny the second time around, even though Mr. Roper and Jack did have great chemistry

Can someone tell me if they wrote the character of Ralph Furley and then got Don Knotts or if they found out that Don Knotts was willing to play the new landlord and wrote the character around him?

I remember this statement from one of the producers, "we want the next landlord to be someone kind of like Don Knotts, Hey let's get Don Knotts"-LOL
