Yeah he returned in the 1979-80 season. He was only brought back because Sherman Hemsley ran into Him somewhere and they started talking and Sherman told the producers that Mike would like to return.

He left because he felt his role became too small on the show.

Could have been. I know his name was supposed to be Michael Black originally on the show. The Black Family. James Black, Florida, and Thelma Black. The first last name was black but it was changed to Evans.

I don't think Michael's middle name was ever mentioned but he sure had plenty of nicknames-lol

I was surprised that he was actually a pretty good vocalist. He sings in one of the first season Jeffersons episodes. He retired completely from show business to become a farmer in upstate NY.

Are you sure you are not confusing him with Damon Evans? He was the one with the musical theater backround. I don't believe that Mike Evans ever sang.

Mike sings a jazz styled tune in a scene in Charlie's Bar in Jenny's Low, which was the last episode in year 1. I know Damon is an opera singer in Europe.

I didn't know Mike Evans ever sang on the show. I think it might have been a one shot thing, for I never heard of him having a singing career like Damon. I hear Damon is in New York. I think he has a residence there. I wish there was a way too see what they both look like now, especially Mike Evans. Well, maybe not. I can't picture him old looking. I don't want to!

Mike could carry a tune very well. He certainly could have been an all around entertainer. I don't recall him ever singing in any other episodes later in the series or on All in the Family. Mike would be about 55 by now and I guess Damon would be in that age range as well. From what I remember of Sayonara Mike still had an afro, although afros went out of fashion by 1982!

Afro's wasn't completely out of Fashion in 1982, just the Jackson Five Type Afro. Jackie Jackson, the oldest brother had the best Fro I ever seen.LOL

Yeah, afros were not in style in 1985. Short natural hair, waves, gheri curls, maybe a style where the hair wa kind of high on top and in the back but thin on the sides, but not a full out afro like what you would need a cake cutter pick to comb through.

Speaking of hair, the evolution of the performers hairdos in this show is interesting:

Sherman had part of his hair dyed grey in the 70s, yet by the last couple of years it looked like he was dying his hair black and Florence kept joking about George being bald

Roxie Roker had punk rock and mohawk style hairdos in the last couple of seasons which were very ugly to look at

Isabel Sanford obviously wore wigs most of the time, but I do recall seeing her wear her own hair combed back on the sides at the start of season 6 and I saw an episode in the last year where she looked like she wore her own hair and she had brown highlights. Some of her wigs were really big, I guess to distract from her weight. Some in the last couple seasons looked like her own hair gheri curled out and dyed jet black

Marla Gibbs wore her own hair at times and wigs on other occassions. In the last couple years when she did wear her own hair it was obviously died black.

Berlinda Tolbert had that betty boop hairdo in the 80s, but I thought her longer do from year 6 was more becoming

LOL!

Was Sherman's hair dyed gray, or was it natural? Why would they dye his hair gray? Seems backwards to me.

Zara Cully also wore a wig, obviously.

Sanford went from the "ghetto pull back in a bun look" to those flashy wigs. She did indeed age well though. I thought she better in 1985 than in 1975.

I have a photo of a young Helmsley in the late 60s and looks very much like a queen.

Sherman's hair was dyed so he could like closer to isabel sanford's age. They were 20 years apart.

I think they dyed Sherman's hair in the 70s because he was in his 30s yet he looked 10 years older. he had facial wrinkles too, which is why I always found it hard to believe that he was so young.

I saw some kind of special about Norman Lear and they showed him rehearsing a scene with Isabel, Sherman and a couple other actors in the later Jefferson years and Isabel had the bun hairdo, so I guess that was how she wore her hair when she wasn't performing. Even in that clip in which Isabel didn't have on much or maybe any makeup those 2 actors didn't look 21 years apart in age.

To me, Sherman didn't need to dye his hair to look the same age as Sanford, they looked the same age anyway. Good for her, bad for him, considering the huge age difference.

Probably because of his receding hairline
