rossnrach4ever 08-20-2004, 11:48 AM discuss your feeling on ensemble shows....
seinfeld is a classic but not that funny to me.....
best ensemble shows...golden girls, designing women, sex and the city and of course friends........
Chambers 08-20-2004, 12:26 PM Seinfeld is definitely a favorite of mine along with Cheers.

Best Ensemble Shows IMO:
Like Chambers said, Cheers and Seinfeld are great ensemble shows. I would add to that list: Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Tyler Moore, and Friends.
James"Thunder"Early 08-20-2004, 01:29 PM Mary Tyler Moore
Cheers
tvfan0101 08-20-2004, 01:53 PM If we want to get really hardcore in our definition of ensemble show, then most of the shows listed here would not count, due to the fact that they had a star attached to the series, someone who was intended to get more screentime than the rest. Jerry Seinfeld in Seinfeld, Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke in theior respective shows, and Alan Alda in M*A*S*H, although it started out more as more of an ensemble show from the beginning. Friends would be the only real ensemble show, due to the fact that the six actos were on the same level.
But realistically, using that definition is silly. My favorite ensemble shows are M*A*S*H and Friends.

But both Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore have called their respective shows ensemble shows. That's because even tho most episodes feature the "star," a good portion of the episodes feature a lesser character.
barwars 08-20-2004, 04:10 PM Ensemble shows are the best types of shows.
My favorites are..... (in order from "least" favorite to favorite, although I love them all)
M*A*S*H, Wings, Friends, Taxi, Mary Tyler Moore, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Seinfeld, Frasier,
and of course -- Cheers.

Fair enough. I totally agree. I am just saying that if you wanted to go to an extreme most so-called ensemble shows would not be ensemble shows, no matter who said they were.
For the record, I think every show listed in this thread thus far is an ensemble cast. But when you think about it really, really hard (hard enough, in fact, that your head hurts) shows like Friends in which there are no clear stars are just a bit more ensemble than shows like The Mary Tyler Moore show, in which there is a clear star.
