I Love Lucy: When they moved to Connecticut. It was still funny, but it strayed away from the original premise.

Dick Van Dyke: Never. One of the few shows that, IMO, never jumped. Possibily because it left after only five seasons.

Mary Tyler Moore: After Rhoda and Phyllis left. Still a very funny show afterwards, but Rhoda and Phyllis leaving was like Lucy w/o Ethel.

Cheers: After Diane left. Rebecca was very funny, but the show became sort of a new show when they changed characters.

Friends: After season 7. Season 8 was good (won the Emmys to prove it), but after season 7 the show seemed dragged out and overstayed its welcome.

I used to think that too, but I don't anymore. I think Rebecca was a bad character, but everything else about the show kept getting better.

Frasier kinda jumped the shark right around when Niles and Daphne got together - but it redeemed itself later on.

TC-Season 8:They had an episode where Jack,Janet & Terri were hiding a kitten from Mr.Furley(Look What I Found) like Jack,Janet & Chrissy had to hide a puppy from Mr.Roper(No Children,No Dogs) which made it look like they were losing ideas

I hate that term "jump the shark" I hate the website too.

I Love Lucy: Never. The chemistry was still there when the show ended.

Happy Days: Twice. When Fonzie became the lead character in season 4 and when Ron Howard/Donny Most left the show after season 7.

Laverne & Shirley: The departure of Cindy Williams aka Shirley Feeney.

Three's Company: When Suzanne Somers left the show in season 5.

The Munsters: Never. It lasted only two seasons.

Gilligan's Island: Never. It lasted only three seasons.

But why did it Jump the Shark, just becuase Niles and Daphne got together? I've never understood that. To me a show gets better when the couple gets together, I mean I Know there are people who would say Wings Jumped the Shark when Joe and Helen got married, but I don't think so, there were so many great episodes about them being married :)

But the best thing about the Niles/Daphne relationship, was that for the first 7 years.... Daphne didn't have a CLUE that Niles was obsessed with her.

And I think that was also about the time that David Angell died on one of the September 11th flights.
So without one of the original creators, the show took a turn for the worse (although it never got bad, IMO)

Season 11 "jumped back" IMO (and the opinion of many others)

Even though Im a fan of the show, I never liked that part.
Next to Phoebe -- its the worst part of the show, IMO.
(although Ross saying Rachel's name at the altar is classic.)

I don't think there's a general rule. In Cheers, for example, Sam and Diane were funny as a couple (they were funnier apart, but that's just my opion). Likwise, Lilith and Frasier together were funny (especially because they weren't sappy). But in Frasier, as barwars pointed out, there was more opportunity for comedy when Niles and Daphne were apart. The comedy died down when they got together. Bascially, IMO, couples only work on sitcoms if they're funny.

They didnt get boring (although them not having sex and Daphne overeating instead was REALLY stupid, its not that hard to hide an actress being pregnant).... but it wasnt as entertaining as his obsession.

But as a couple, they were at their best in Season 11, when Daphne was very irritable (thanks to pregnancy)

I've really never been a fan of couples getting together on sitcoms.... it's funnier when they can't have what they want.
(except on Boy Meets World.... I don't like Season 5 as much as the others because Cory and Topanga break up)

I didnt like the first few episodes of Season 7, once again -- Cory and Topanga breaking up didnt bring me any laughs.

However, on Cheers, the breakups/almost breakups of Sam and Diane are hilarious.

That 70s Show-Last season.The gang should've all went to college(eventhough it would mean that they would've had no use for the parents),they made all these stupid plots to keep the wedding til next year.Can you imagine what stupid things they're gonna put in this year to make the wedding be in the finale?

The Andy Griffith show-BLACK & WHITE, & BARNEY FIFE. I think that says it all! (and I know everyone aggrees with me!!)

Sex And The City - really went downhill when the series went from a comedy to a dramatic soap opera. The beginning was midway into season 4 when Miranda got pregnant. It was good to get a character preg but in the process it ruined the character. Her sarcasm was one of the best assets to the series. I think there was one funny thing about the entire series finale. What a disgrace.

Buffy - never jumped completely. There were a few times it was dabbling in shark infested waters (Riley and the Initiative in season 4, Dawn in season 5, the slayers-in-training in season 7) but it always redeemed itself a step or two before jumping.

Friends - I think the show went into decline and became "comfort food" when Monica and Chandler got engaged at the end of season 6. Afterwards, while the show remained entertaining, it was very much a shadow of it's former self from seasons 7-10 and the episodes became so predictable, and then afterwards resorted to gimmicks such as Rachel's pregnancy/birth.

Ally McBeal - this show was an example of a chinese torture device. The jumping began about 3/4 into season 3 when Billy suddenly died midway into an episode.... then the ropes got a little tighter at the end of season 3 when Courtney Thorne-Smith left... but then they got looser in season 4 when Robert Downey Jr., Anne Heche and Taye Diggs joined... but that quickly backlashed and all three were gone by the end of season 4, as well as Lisa Nicole Carson.... but the last season was the worse. ::tight:: Lucy Liu leaves ::tighter:: Ally gets a "Mini-Me" ::tightening more:: Peter McNichol leaves as a regular ::beginning to choke:: Jon Bon Jovi gets brought in as a love interest who has no chemistry with Ally ::flatlines:: we're introduced to a daughter Ally herself never knew she had. It was everything a final season should not be.

Cosby Show - Olivia was cute, but she started stealing airtime away from the actual Huxtable kids.... and then she remained on the show even after Lisa Bonet leaves. And then Cousin Pam comes in, as a last ditch effort to try and make Cosby "hotter" to an urban market... well, it failed.

Diff'rent Strokes - I thought the show was entering it's best seasons around 82-83, Arnold was getting older and being used for more than cute and funny, and Willis was now in his late teens. However, the producers felt the need to bring in another kid, and therefore entered Sam. Complete flatlining.

Three's Company - in reverse of what a lot of people say about couples... I think what ruined things was when Jack and Janet DIDN'T get together in season 8... imaging how great Three's A Crowd may have been had it been Janet, and not Vicki?

Charmed - surprisingly didn't jump with Shannen's leaving, but however, the pasttime that has been known to kill many a show wound up massacring this as well..... a baby. In the season and a half since Wyatt's birth, the premise has changed from saving innocents against evil forces, to protecting baby Wyatt. And to top it off, the series has gotten less and less supernatural drama and more and more fluff.

Sabrina, the Teenage Witch-when it moved to the WB. Season 5 was horrific, season 6 was ok as was season 7, but they didn't compare to season 4, which was the best season

with Wings, I think the reason a lot of people think it jumped when Joe and Helen got married was not because they got married (even tho the "will they/won't they?" relationship in the early seasons was great) but because Thomas Haden Church left the series exactly at the same time.

I am in such a minority over this. I thought the last season of Roseanne actually breathed new life into a franchise that was getting stale. It was certainly past it's prime, but I would take season 9 over seasons 1-3 and season 7 anyday IMO.

I agree... another one I'm in the minority about since it seems like most people hate seasons 1 and 2 and love 3-7 (most hate the post-Howard years), when I think the nostalgia on the series was authentic those first two seasons, and then it just became a sitcom that got less and less 50's centric as time went on.

WKRP in Cincinnati never jumped the shark.

Well, it was on for only four seasons, but even the episode that talked about the Who concert tragedy was done incredibly well- great laughs for the first 20 minutes and then the last five commenting respetfully on the incident.

in my opinion bmw got boring when shawn became serious and wasnt funny but later on he got funny again though i think every season of bmw is hilarious

lizzie mcguire-when miranda left and they kept making dumb excuses to why she was gone

Cindy was definately the weak link though, Im glad she left fast.

Terri was better looking than Chrissy but,she wasn't really funny.

I agree wholeheartedly.

By season 4 the writers and producers made Chrissy a complete idiot to a point you could not stand her.

Me too. I also thought when Terri came on board Janet became a lot more looser and comical. Not as bossy and controlling as she was in the early seasons.

One of my favorite shows in Barney Miller and it never jumped. Which is strange when you think about it. Two original characters leave the show by the end of the 2nd season and most fans agree that the show got even better.

threes company after chrissy left it was never the same it almost jumped when the ropers left, but it was still funny season 4 is a very funny season i loved lana!! alice, flo left even though i liked belle, flo was it!! the show just couldnt make it i dont know how it did but once flo left downhill. then their is some shows that never jumpedi think, facts of life i think it got better as it went along.

Bewitched 'jumped the shark' when Dick York was replaced by Dick Sargeant as Darrin.It was never the same after that.

The Nanny lost its appeal when Fran and Max got hitched.The episodes were poor.
