For me it is Steven Spielberg. I've enjoyed a number of his movies like Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders Of The Lost Ark and E.T., but his work just dosn't have the punch of many of his peers work such as Brian De Palma and Martin Scorsese. A person may enjoy Jaws (as I do) but the film doesn't leave you with much of an impression once it is done where as films like De Palma's Scarface, Dressed To Kill and Body Double and Scorsese's Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas leaves the viewer with the impression that they've just seen something great, a filmgoing experience that will forever stay with them.

I'm not even going to say it. I don't want to get in trouble.;)

If there were any filmmaker I would want to aspire to be like, it would be Lucas(Although he has been relying a bit too much on CGI for his latest Star Wars ventures which has taken away some of the humanity that was present in his other films, which is why I think these Star Wars films aren't received as well as their predecessors).


And no, I'm not going to say who I really think is overrated:D, but if we are talking about real filmmakers I would have to say Quentin Tarentino. Lot's of style; little substance.

I really like Tarantino, but depending on how you look at it it could be said that he is overrated.

There is this episode where Jay sues Dante, and Randall is his lawyer, and he calls George Lucas to the stand and starts grilling him about the inconsistancies in Star Wars, it's really funny.

at any rate, Tarantino is one of my favorite filmmakers, so I guess we can agree to disagree :)

Steven Spielberg...like many other filmmakers, he's made some good movies and he's made some bad ones. But I think the good ones outweight the bad ones. I don't think he's overrated - his mass-appeal, special effects movies like Jurassic Park and Jaws, are just loved by the public. They didn't get oscars like bloody Titanic did. Critics don't bow down to them, and so they're not really overrated. But his quality films are already classics: The Color Purple, Schindler's List, Empire of the Sun, etc.

Robert Altman: Dr. T sucked, but he's gold in my book for having made Gosford Park - one of my favorite movies.

That could have been a really good movie...but the script was just terrible.

Kevin Smith is a really good screenwriter, he just isn't a very good director.
