TBS, Nick at Nite Buy 'Home' Rerun Rights

By Kimberly Speight
Hollywood Reporter

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - TBS and Nick at Nite have signed a deal to share the cable rerun rights to the Tim Allen sitcom "Home Improvement," beginning in fall 2007.

According to the terms of the deal, which spans six years, Time Warner-owned TBS and Viacom-owned Nick at Nite will have exclusivity in airing the venerable family comedy, said Jed Cohen, senior vp/national sales manager at Buena Vista Television, which distributes the show.

It's unclear how many daily runs each is allowed or what the specific dayparts are for the networks, but Nick at Nite's comedy-centric nighttime schedule airs only from 9 p.m.-6 a.m.

You think they waited long enough before showing it? Why wait 3 years to start showing it? Some of could be dead by then and the longer they wait to show it the less likely people will be interested in watching it. Also they longer they wait to start showing it the more people who did not grow up with it will be around and not watch it.

They better come up with a good excuse to why they are waiting until 2007 to show it.

Because TBS/WGN has the rights until 2007. The current deal between them expires then. The new deal starts fall 2007 in which TBS/WGN renews and Nick@Nite also has a contract starting then. Nick@Nite isn't waiting just for their own health, lol.

HOME IMPROVEMENT (SEPTEMBER, 2007)
Home Improvement centers on "Tim" 'The Toolman' Taylor (Tim Allen), an accident-prone host of a Detroit, Michigan television program about tools, who raises his dysfunctional family. Jill (Patricia Richardson) is Tim's wife who wants to be a psychiatrist and Dr. Wilson Wilson, Jr. (Earl Hindman) is the Taylors' strange neighbor who enjoys learning about other cultures and never
shows his entire face. Albert "Al" Borland (Richard Karn) is Tim's flannel-wearing co-host. The show also includes Bradley "Brad" Michael Taylor (Zachery Ty Bryan), the Taylors' eldest son who is hoping for a soccer scholarship, Randall "Randy" William Taylor (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) is the Taylors' middle child who is off at an environmental research study in Costa
Rica and Mark Taylor (Taran Noah Smith) is the youngest son who is frequently tortured by his older brothers.

Has anyone seen the promos for this show already? All they say is Home Improvement is coming this September, but no timeslot has been decided for the show yet. I'm guessing a big change to NAN this September, since this and George Lopez are coming. Cosby will probably be off the schedule, Roseanne will take the place of Cosby, and George Lopez/Home Improvemetn will share the 10pm slot. Just my thought.

I haven't seen any type of promo yet. I leave my tv on N@N, but I usually fall asleep LOL. I'm guessing that when the time gets closer, we'll see a more detailed one. :)

Cosby is supposed to be entirely on TV Land by Spring 2008, but by September, it will probably be on less on NAN, to make room for Home Improvement, like you said. I'm hoping Full House does not get renewed, too.

There's only a few more weeks of waiting. I guess we'll all see how ratings are during the launch marthon. If they shorten it by 3 days, it's doing badly. If they don't shorten it all, it's the next Fresh Prince-LOL.

For everyone who doesn't know yet, the week long marathon starts on September 3rd and is hosted by Tim Allen. :)

So I've seen. If they're paying Tim Allen to commentate on commercials, they gotta be expecting pretty high ratings.

I've seen a couple comericals for it already... god Tim Allen looks so different. Looks good and i don't really care if they get rid of Full House or the Cosby Show, i'm pretty sick of those sitcoms
Anyways, can't wait for it to start!

I think Full House will definitely be gone. They cut the full week summer marathon short a couple weeks ago and replaced it with The Cosby Show this week. I've noticed that The Cosby Show has been on from 8:00-9:00 in the evenings on TV Land, so I'm guessing it will not be on N@N at all once Home Improvement and George Lopez start.

Personally, as I may or may not have stated here at this board before, N@N (and TVLAND for that matter) has totally gone down hill. IMHO, Home Improvement is the ONLY show that is keeping N@N in my good graces right how. I remeber the "hay day" back in the late eighties to early to mid nineties (okay, so I was 6-13) when they had Milkman and How to Be Swell, cute little N@N promo songs, contests and marathons, but what really was awesome was their line-up: Dragnet, The Dick Van Dyke Show, the Mary Tyler Moore Show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Get Smart, The Partridge Family, Welcome Back, Kotter, etc. I gues I am getting a little off topic, but as I was saying, HI is the only good thing to be happening to that channel in about 10 years. I hope they don't do what they did to Growing Pains and put it on for a month and then move it to the "graveyard shift" and take it off completely. It is too good of a show for that!

I agree with you 110%! I loved when they had the classic shows on. They were so much fun to watch! I think HI will be a huge success for N@N. I don't see them moving it to late night. I would be totally surprised if they did.

For as much as I love this show, they are airing it way too much. They pushed Roseanne and Cosby both to 3am just to give Home Improvement 5 episodes a night that's completely outrageous! Then on weekends, we get 6 airings. I love this show, but I also love Roseanne and Cosby, and I'd hate to see them go just because of this show!

And BTW, both Roseanne and FUll House have been renewed.

Well of course you liked N@N more when you were a kid cause it brings back good old memories, i'm the same way with N@N I remember watching: Mary Tyler moore show, cheers,Andy Griffith. but I really like N@N right now as well but they do need to get some new shows every year or so.

While I agree, the old N@N brings back memories of when I was a kid, the main reason I liked it better was the channel was run better. It was more unique with its promos, specials (like the countdown every new years of the 100 best episodes) and most of all they just had better shows on. If they want to get away from shows that are from the 50's, 60's and 70's, can't they pick some shows like Growing Pains, Perfect Strangers, Newhart, Wonder Years? I am glad to see the addition of HI, which is from the early 90's. It's a shame that they are beating certain shows they have on their lineup now, which in my opinion are mediocre, to death.

They have aired The Wonder Years, Perfect Strangers and Growing Pains previously, and they all bombed on the network. Home Improvement is a great pickup because it fits the definition as a modern classic and a family show, which NAN is trying to go for today. And, Home Improvement covered the entire 90's, not just early 90's.

I didn't think that Wonder Years bombed in the ratings. I thought it was on there for a while, as for the other two, I think that is a shame. I know that it was a long running show that ended in '99 I believe. What I should have clarified and what I meant was that it started in the early '90's (1991 I believe). I think it will be a perfect addition to the channel line up.

Wonder Years didn't bomb. It aired for a number of years, 93-99 or so. Perfect Strangers never aired before 3am, so how could that have bombed? In fact it did well because they paid to convert more episodes, since it was part of a library deal. Charles in Charge also did well for them in the late night, so well that it got a primetime marathon later on hosted by Scott Baio.

Maybe they have it scheduled for a lot of time slots just to promote it for a few weeks. After that, they'll give Roseanne and Cosby more time. I've noticed that TV Land has been showing Cosby from 8:00-9:00pm though, so I'm not sure if they're moving it just to TV Land or continue showing it on both.

Sorry but I dont really remember the promos cause I was a child when all those shows use to come on :(

I might be wrong but didnt they use to show Night Court on N@N? I wish they would show NC on N@N.

So full house got renewed? Im not the biggest fan of FH but at least Cosbys didnt get renewed.

Full House was renewed, and Cosby is still on the netowrk (it never expired). I don't remember Night Court on NAN, but I know it was on TVland for a short while.
