My favorite character on Roseanne is Darlene, and I was wondering, when exactly did she become the "smart" one on the show? I remember that Becky used to be very smart, and even wrote a paper for Darlene. But then it seemed that Becky ran off with Mark and got stupid, and suddenly Darlene was the brain in the family and got accepted to the art college and got offered a job with an advertising firm.

My main question is, when was this transition? When did they make it clear that Darlene was the most intelligent member of the family?

I think it was when she started seeing David. Just like Becky became less smart when she started seeing Mark.
Either that or when she went to college

When Darlene started wearing black clothing she seemed to gain insight on many things. She realized she didn't want to kill animals for they're meat and she started the comic book with David. When Becky wrote the paper for Darlene, Darlene seemed to disagree with the teachers opinon on what should be in the paper. (I forget the exact quote but Becky said for Darlene to just mention her opinon not make a big deal about it).

She did not become the smart one, she just found what she liked and adapted to it. She applied herself when she found her niche, and she matured making her more mature and sound more knowledgable.

Becky was smart when Lecy played her part, no matter what season Lecy played Becky with intelligence, Sarah played Becky in her style and she came off as dumb
