ACT I.

SCENE I.
(ANN, PAUL, and CASSIE are sitting at the table. KRIS and STELLA join them.)
STELLA: I’m starving!
KRIS: Me, too. [to STELLA] I’m having a little trouble copying your homework, since your handwriting’s so bubbly. Would you mind typing it up next time?
(STELLA rolls her eyes.)
ANN: Paul, thanks again for cooking tonight. I didn’t think I’d be at the office that long.
PAUL: It was no problem. I hope you all like it.
(ANN, KRIS, STELLA, and CASSIE dig in and then make disgusted faces.)
PAUL: What’s wrong?
KRIS: Did you check the date on this salmon before cooking it, Dad?
PAUL: [flatly] It’s meatloaf.
STELLA: [scrutinizing food on plate] Then why does mine have an eye?
ANN: It’s fine, Paul. Ignore the kids.
PAUL: No, no, I want your honest opinions. Cassie, what do you think of this dinner?
CASSIE: It sucks.
ANN: [gasping] Cassie, you know you can’t use language like that at the table!
CASSIE: Since when?
ANN: It’s one of our household rules.
CASSIE: I – I forgot.
ANN: How could you forget something that your brother’s reminded us of over and over
and over?
KRIS: Yeah, Cass. Don’t you remember a couple months ago, I got three more weeks
of being grounded for saying sh –
(ANN and PAUL glare at him.)
KRIS: That’s another three weeks, isn’t it?
PAUL: Four.
CASSIE: Come on, Mom, Kris forgot the rule! Why couldn’t I?
ANN: Honey, you’re a lot – brighter than he is.
(KRIS glowers, STELLA laughs.)
PAUL: Go to your room, Cassie.
CASSIE: [whining] Do I have to?
ANN: You could stay here and finish your dinner.
CASSIE: I’ll be in my room.
(CASSIE darts up the stairs at the back of the kitchen.)
STELLA: [still giggling] I have to go study for my trigonometry test.
ANN: [sighing] Go ahead.
STELLA: Thanks.
(STELLA leaves the room. KRIS starts to stand up.)
KRIS: I’m going to go study for my trig test, too.
PAUL: Hold it. What test?
KRIS: Calculus?
PAUL: Nope.
KRIS: Geometry?
PAUL: You’re getting warmer…
KRIS: Hey, you let Stella study for her test!
PAUL: Stella knows what math course she’s in.
KRIS: But I’m not studying for math – I’m studying for science!
(PAUL, frustrated, slams his head down on the table.)
ANN: Just go, Kris.
(KRIS hurries out of the room.)
ANN: So, honey…it’s just you, and me, and…[looks at dinner] this stuff. [shivers]
PAUL: Is it really that bad?
ANN: Try it and decide for yourself.
(PAUL examines the food, poking it with his fork.)
PAUL: No, thanks. Let’s just go out and get some burgers.
ANN: I know you worked hard, Paul, but practice makes perfect.
PAUL: You think I’d get better if I practiced cooking more often?
ANN: [very quickly] NO!! I mean…I don’t want you to have to cook if you don’t want
to.
PAUL: But I even made a cheesecake – [emphatically, gesturing at cake on table] from scratch!
ANN: Why don’t you put it in the refrigerator and we can throw it out – I mean, put it
back out tomorrow.
PAUL: All right. Let’s go get some real food.
ANN: You think it’s all right to leave the kids alone?
PAUL: Stella’s responsible, and Cassie wouldn’t leave the house.
ANN: I meant Kris.
PAUL: If we don’t tell them we’re going out, he won’t try to take advantage of the fact
we’re not home.
ANN: Good thinking.
(ANN puts the cheesecake in the refrigerator and she and PAUL leave the room.)

SCENE II.
(KRIS walks past STELLA combing her hair in the hall mirror.)
KRIS: You got dressed up to study?
STELLA: Um….yes. Yes I did.
KRIS: Wow, that’s sad.
STELLA: [starting to walk away] Well, I’ll be downstairs.
KRIS: Hold on, Stella. You’re acting strange – even for you.
STELLA: All right. I’m going to a friend’s house to study.
KRIS: [prying for information] Is it a date?
STELLA: Sort of…it’s a STUDY date. The key word is STUDY.
KRIS: Who are you going to STUDY with?
STELLA: Brian Fitzpatrick.
KRIS: I thought you’ve been madly in love with Clark Kern since kindergarten.
STELLA: True, but…Brian is so much more mature than Clark.
KRIS: He is?
STELLA: Yeah. He’s president of the debate club, he’s the state’s geography bee champion, and he’s been accepted into three colleges already – you know, dumb,
sophisticated stuff like that. I just thought I should be going out with someone
a little smarter.
KRIS: And Clark turned you down?
STELLA: I didn’t even get to ask him. I found out I’ve been putting all my notes for Clark in Brian’s locker. They’re right next to each other.
KRIS: [laughing] And now you have to go out with that geek!
STELLA: [angrily] Whatever! I’m just going to go out with him once to be nice and then
I’ll never talk to him again.
KRIS: You know, you’re going to get in big trouble for leaving the house tonight.
STELLA: [nervously] Why?
KRIS: How should I know? I don’t know the rules around here.
STELLA: Oh, no! I just remembered. We’re not supposed to go out on school nights. You’re just going to have to cover for me.
KRIS: I don’t think so.
STELLA: Then I don’t think I’ll let you copy my homework anymore.
KRIS: Go out! Have a good time! They’ll never find out.
STELLA: Thank you! I’ll be back in a few hours.
(STELLA runs down the stairs. CASSIE comes out of her room.)
CASSIE: Where’s Stella going?
KRIS: Well…she’s going to study.
CASSIE: Yeah, right. All dressed-up? Come on, Kris. I’m not stupid.
(KRIS scratches his head and CASSIE laughs and walks back to her room.)

[commercial break]

ACT II.

SCENE III.
(ANN and PAUL enter the house later that night, STELLA following them unhappily. CASSIE is sitting on the couch.)
CASSIE: What happened?
PAUL: We found Stella at the Burger Stop with a very – um – studious-looking young
man.
CASSIE: Let me get this straight…you and Mom sneaked out to get some real food and
found Stella and a nerd at the restaurant?
ANN: Cassie, go to your room.
(ANN hands CASSIE a bag with restaurant food in it and CASSIE runs upstairs.)
ANN: Stella, we’re very disappointed in you.
STELLA: I’m sorry, I know I wasn’t supposed to be out.
ANN: You knowingly broke a rule, and - can’t you get a better date than that?
STELLA: I went out with him to be nice, Mom. I felt bad for him.
PAUL: That’s all well and good, Stella, but you could have waited until the weekend.
STELLA: Brian has an international science fair this weekend.
ANN: Wow, that’s sad –
(PAUL elbows ANN.)
ANN: And very impressive.
PAUL: Since you were doing what seems to be a charitable deed, we might let you off the hook. Just give your mom and me some time to think it over.
(ANN and PAUL go upstairs, and STELLA heads into the kitchen. KRIS is sitting at the table eating cheesecake, and she joins him.)
STELLA: [angrily] I can’t believe you, Kris! You said you wouldn’t tell them!
KRIS: [defensively] I didn’t! I realized they weren’t in the house right after you left.
STELLA: Okay, okay. I’m sorry I didn’t trust you.
KRIS: How was the date, anyway?
STELLA: Terrible. I acted as stupid and annoying as I could, but it made Brian like me
even more! And to top it all off, he was glad when Mom and Dad found us.
KRIS: Why?
STELLA: He said getting to meet my parents was a crucial step in the development of
our relationship.
KRIS: Ewww…
STELLA: Tell me about it. Now he wants to meet me at his locker tomorrow, and Clark’s
going to think I’m a geek, and all my friends will laugh at me…
KRIS: I’ve got an idea. Why don’t you pretend you have a boyfriend?
STELLA: Who would be the boyfriend? And please don’t say you…that’s even worse
than Brian.
KRIS: Ugh, of course not me! I meant my friend Mike.
STELLA: Hmm…he’s semi-attractive…sort of popular…he’ll work.
KRIS: Of course, you’ll owe me for giving you the idea.
STELLA: When your grounding sentence ends, I’ll cover for you when you feel like going out on a weeknight.
KRIS: That won’t work. I’ve been locked up for four years…and I don’t see an end in
sight.
(The two laugh.)
KRIS: Have some cheesecake. I found it in the fridge, and it’s not bad.
STELLA: Okay.
(STELLA gets herself a piece and she and KRIS discuss their plan for the next day.)

SCENE IV.
(At school the next day, STELLA and her friend ALICIA in front of STELLA’s locker.)
STELLA: Where’s Michael? He was supposed to be here five minutes ago so we could
go over our lines! Kris said he’d tell Michael the time to get here and everything.
ALICIA: I’m so sorry about this whole Brian Fitzpatrick thing. I’ll be so happy for you
if you can get him to forget about you.
STELLA: Thanks, Alicia, for being such a good friend.
ALICIA: And if you can’t…there’s a lot of other people I can hang out with.
(STELLA is about to say something when CLARK walks by. Both girls freeze and follow him with their eyes until he’s stopped at his locker nearby.)
STELLA: [whispering] Oh, no! Clark can’t see me with Brian –
ALICIA: It’s too late.
(ALICIA steps away from STELLA at the moment that BRIAN, a nerdy-looking boy, approaches her.)
BRIAN: Hi, darling…
STELLA: Hi, um – Brian.
BRIAN: Boy, I sure am excited for the science fair! My solar-powered jetpack is bound
to win first prize.
STELLA: [tapping her foot, looking at her watch] That’s nice.
BRIAN: And my chess tournament is later this afternoon – and I would really like my
girlfriend to be there, routing for me.
STELLA: I’m sorry, Brian, I can’t make it, but…
(STELLA trails off as MIKE and KRIS walk by.)
STELLA: [grabbing Mike by the arm] Mike, you’re just the person I wanted to see!
MIKE: Huh?
STELLA: [whispering] Kris, didn’t you tell him?
KRIS: Of course I told him – [realizes he didn’t] Whoops, I’m gonna be late for – lunch.
(KRIS walks away quickly. MIKE tries to leave, but STELLA holds him back.)
STELLA: Brian, I’ve been meaning to tell you…Mike is my boyfriend.
MIKE L: I thought you hated me.
STELLA: [laughing] And he has a wonderful sense of humor.
BRIAN: Then why’d you go out with me?
STELLA: The truth is, I…just did it to be nice.
BRIAN: [stunned] Oh. I see.
STELLA: I mean, since I’m already taken and everything. Are we on for Saturday,
Mike?
MIKE: This is all going a little too fast for me.
BRIAN: I’m sorry, Stella, I didn’t know. Well, I guess I’ll see you around.
STELLA: See ya.
(STELLA and MIKE walk away, arm-in-arm. After they get around the corner, she lets go of him.)
STELLA: Thanks for cooperating. It’s a long story…I’ll explain another time.
(STELLA walks off with ALICIA, who has caught up with her.)
MIKE: [confused] I’ll see you on Saturday, I guess…?
(The camera cuts to BRIAN, who goes over to his locker next to CLARK’s.)
CLARK: Stella Emerson is going out with Mike Phillips?
BRIAN: Yeah. But that relationship won’t last.
CLARK: Yeah, probably.
BRIAN: Don’t get any ideas. After they break up, she’s mine.
CLARK: I thought she said she went out with you just to be nice.
BRIAN: No girl has ever been nice to me. Which means she’s the one. [clutching his
chest] I’m in love!
(BRIAN walks away and CLARK laughs.)

SCENE V. [tag]
(That evening, the Emerson family is finishing dinner.)
CASSIE: That was great, Mom.
STELLA: Yeah, it was.
PAUL: Thanks for rubbing it in.
ANN: It’s okay, Paul. Cooking’s not for everyone.
KRIS: Did you make dessert, too, Mom?
(ANN urgently signals KRIS to be quiet.)
PAUL: Actually, I took care of the dessert yesterday. It’s a delicious cheesecake I made
all by myself.
ANN: [muttering] I forgot to put it out with the trash…[aloud] I’ll get it, honey.
(ANN gets up and opens the refrigerator. She takes out an almost empty pie pan.)
ANN: It looks like somebody ate it already – but I can’t imagine why.
PAUL: My cheesecake!
KRIS: Uh-oh.
STELLA: Kris and I didn’t know it was for tonight, so we had it.
CASSIE: Were you punishing yourselves?
KRIS: It was good.
ANN: It was?
PAUL: Maybe I’m no good at dinners, but I think I can handle desserts. I’m just sorry
that we couldn’t all have the cheesecake that I artfully prepared from scratch.
(CASSIE gets up and puts her dishes in the sink. She takes a box off the counter.)
CASSIE: Where’d this come from? It says MIRACLE CHEESECAKE MIX: Just Add
Water.
PAUL: Cassie, go to your room.
(They all laugh.)
CASSIE: So that’s why it didn’t taste like sh –
(She freezes. Everyone stares at her.)
CASSIE: I know, I know…I’ll go to my room.
(CASSIE leaves the room, and the others start laughing again as the scene fades.)
