I think the one that comes to my mind was Janet and Terri from Three's Company. I think they were extremely underrated to Jack because it was John Ritter's show.

Ross. Alot of people find him unfunny on friends but I love him; I think hes really funny.

Ethel from I Love Lucy. She was sometimes better than Lucy.

I agree.

Peter Newkirk- Hogan's Heroes. You had to have seen that coming. Actually, most of the supporting cast. They were all good.

Roger Healey- I Dream of Jeannie

Ross from Friends, even though it wasnt that great of a show, he was easily the best part, he was an absolutely brilliant character

Terri and Larry from TC are both very underrated

Phil and Paul from Cheers were both great, though, being unimportant was an integral part of Paul's character.

More as I think of them ;)

I agree.
Also.... Fred from I Love Lucy. I prefer the Mertzes much more than the Ricardos.

Larry Dallas on Three's Company.... HE should've been the star of Three's A Crowd.

Millie Helper and Mel Cooley (spelling?) on The Dick Van Dyke Show. They weren't quite "main stars", but they were in practically as many episodes as Buddy and Sally. Two of the funniest characters, actually -- the best part of the show after Buddy. (with Rob in 4th)

Im not saying he's overrated, he's the best part of the show IMO.
One of my favorite characters.... and the favorite character of many others.

In fact -- I think TVGuide named him the greatest TV character of all time.

I like Ross, he's one of the best characters.
The guys on Friends are much funnier than the women, especially Phoebe.... :barf:
If I could magically erase her from the series I would.

Janet Wood - Three's Company. Joyce DeWitt was an excellent straight woman and voice of reason. Sure John Ritter was the star but I don't think the show would had done well without the voice of reason in the midst of the insanity.

Francine Webster - One Day At A Time. Shelley Fabares played that role remarkably well. She was funny. The combativeness with her and Ann was LOL funny. Too bad there was not more episodes featuring those two.

Steven and Elyse Keaton - Family Ties. This is a couple, IMO, had one of the most realistic TV marriages. Too bad there was not enough storylines dealing with their relationship. There was genuine chemistry between Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter Birney.

Millie Helper - The Dick Van Dyke Show. That character was funny and brought out the zanyness in Mary Tyler Moore in their scenes together. Millie and Laura was one of the most underrated female friendships on TV. Millie was an excellent counterbalance to Laura. A matter of fact Millie was the funniest character in the recent Dick Van Dyke Show reunion.

I think Phoebe is the most underrated character, I think the guys (especially Ross) aren't funny at all:)

George is one of my favorite sitcom characters of all time, so I was goingto say he was underrated, just because he basically couldny ever be rated high enough, but i figured thatw asnt the point of this

Very often we like minor characters very much. They are great in the way that they come in, hit a joke, and run. It is possible that we might not like them as much if they were the lead characters.

Think about "Will And Grace" (not one of my favorite shows). The two supporting characters seem to be better than the leads but they might be hard to take all of the time.

There are more I can think of (liked Peter Newkirk that someone said), but if you look at today's posting history for me, I'm all about Roger right now.

My dad worked as a contractor with NASA, was always working in some way around planes, spacecraft, subs, etc in his career, so I grew up loving that stuff.

One of the main things I loved about IDoJ was that they were astronauts.

So they show this bumbling, seemingly inept guy playing second fiddle to Tony, yet he's a Major, an astronaut and with the Army Corps of Engineers.

Even as a little kid, I knew he couldn't be as stupid as he played sometimes (not even going into Howard Borden, he was just a savant).

So in my Crossover fanfic, I expand on that a bit more, that turns out ol' Roj is a lot smarter than he lets most people (outside his role as astronaut and pilot) realize.

Being in the Corps of Engineers, I made him a Ph. D. in Planetary Sciences (B.S. in Geology). He's still a flirt and a lech, still a wisecracker, I've just expanded on him a bit.

So, yeah, Roger.

Now, Newkirk on the other hand... I always loved him, lol!

Does Professor Roy Hinkley count as a minor character? You'd think he would, being one of "the rest" for too long. I love him too.

Speaking of Peter and Roy here, fanfiction.net (http://www.fanfiction.net/dc/208/1/) has some awesome fanfic from Hogan's Heroes and Gilligan's Island. Some of the HH is surprisingly "dark" for a sitcom. Some of the GI has the Prof and Mary Ann getting together (not in a nasty way, either, it's very well done IMO).

Paul and the Mayor on "Spin City" are 2 of the most underrated sitcom characters IMO.

Also Martin on "Frasier" and Oswald & Lewis on "The Drew Carey Show"

^ Oh and I forgot. UNCLE EDDIE ON GROUNDED FOR LIFE. Man the guy's hilarious.

Sean: Who's staying at your house?
Eddie: A cousin.
Sean: Which one?
Eddie: You wouldn't know him.
Sean: We're brothers!

Iola Boylen from "Mama's Family"

I know, by now everyone would expect me to say this but I feel sometimes the character of Iola gets overshadowed by the Mama and Eunice characters.

Iola was brilliantly played by the comedic genius Beverly Archer--she gave so much to the character that I don't think ANY other actress could've done. I'd love to meet her one day!
