A huge landslide has been caught on camera in central Japan after heavy rains in the region.

The amazing footage shows a broad swathe of trees careering upright down a slope before crashing into each other.

It destroyed a 100-metre stretch of a mountain highway, but nobody was injured in the incident.

The landslide was recorded by staff from the Japanese Ministry of Land who were inspecting the region for instability.

The region has experienced unusually heavy rains in the past few weeks and the film appears to show that the water loosened the topsoil, causing the surrounding forest to move.

Landslides are common in Japan, where around 70 per cent of the landscape is mountainous or hilly.

Man that was scary to look at. Japan must get hit by alot of major disasters. Volcano eruptions, massive biblical grade landslides that can wipe out an entire major city, extremely heavy rainfall, massive tsunamies well over 200' high, massive earthquakes. I'm so glad I don't live in Japan. Those Islands have got to be the fastest eroding islands ever.
