View Full Version : "Maddie's Turn To Cry"
"yeah, i know. i thought we were heading for something big, too."
sam proposes to maddie. she is not sure what to do. so she sneaks out to see david at 4am to find out what he wanted to tell her the other night when he interrupted her date with sam. dave and maddie kiss. they leave just then to do a follow up on a case.
as the sun rises, maddie realizes she had a good time with daivid and had to go home....to sam. sam wakes up with maddie gone.
loved the intro with the people on the street giving the recap from last week's episode.
another great scene was the chase with the milk truck and in the bowling alley. very creative.
herbert really showed jealously as agnes was infatuated with sam.
the momentum of this show has increased.
rating: 9.4
CindyK 08-08-2004, 10:04 PM Isn't this just a great episode. We finally get to see this whole triangle perspective from Maddie's side.....and we ache along with her...watching her struggle with her heart as she tries to juggle both men and both relationships. The scene at David's apartment is the turning point in the trilogy episodes because at that point we all realize who it is she really wants to be with.
Yes, the milk truck chase scene is hilarious as is the bowling alley. I love how Maddie will not be dissuaded from this case....she figures it all out in the midst of her emotional turmoil and absolutely presses on....
This is my favorite of the trilogy. Sam & Dave told David's side and this one tells Maddie's side. But since we already knew how David felt from Blonde on Blonde, this one was especially good since we finally see what Maddie is feeling. Her head is telling her that Sam is perfect for her, but her heart is pulling her to David. The "trunk" scene is one of the sweetest of the whole series betweeen them.

That made me cry and cheer at the same time!
Finally finally!! SHE is showing her feelings and her choice!!
marla 11-14-2004, 05:46 PM this episode is gently moving along.
i was thrown when sam asked maddie to marry him. slow down cowboy!
the way maddie walked into the office showed me her disappointment. she did not have a 'spring in her step' as david would say. and then when she heard the knock at the door and got into her chair to put on a front-well that's the first time i saw maddie put on an act.i believe she thought it was david at the door.
the interesting thing for me as a viewer is that i felt more relaxed when david was around and tensed up when sam was around.
david had heard maddie and i think he knows on some level what the problem is with maddie.
maddie:
david, what are we going to do?
david:
i don't know...there's always the bedroom.
he wasn't making a pass at maddie. to me david is a problem solver. and he wanted to solve this problem and give maddie what she wants. he's very straight forward.
sam at the final scene is finally waking up. and he doesn't look like he's going to go down without a fight.
MulberryGal 11-16-2004, 07:15 AM I'm glad you mentioned the bit where David says (jokingly) to Maddie "theres always the bedroom!". I noticed when watching this yesterday, whilst Dave automatically says he's just joking, the look on Maddies face was priceless. I really felt that she might just have gone for it at that point. She didn't move or walk away from him, she just looked at him with an indefinable look. It was (to me) almost as if she had wanted him to do something.
That kiss was so gentle, so tender and natural. Wonderful stuff...
I love Maddies reaction to Dave's apartment as well...very funny. :D

Dutchie 11-16-2004, 07:56 AM Why did my neighbours had to tape something over this episode...WHY WHY?!?!:angryfire
Why didn't they allow me to watch it more then twice:rolleyes:? I can remember the kiss. The bowling alley and that wonderfull look on Maddie her face:D But the rest? I can't remember the rest....OH! The dating game was in this one, right?
I thought it was great that Maddie did came along on the case this time. I bet she didn't feel right about the night before:)
marla 11-16-2004, 05:02 PM i've only seen it once, but honestly this is how i remember it:
maddie:
david, what are we going to do?
david (very seriously, softly):
there's always the bedroom
maddie-gives david a 'look'
then
david looks down and says'just joking or just kidding'
then
maddie looks down at the back of his head kind of sadly.
but you know, maybe this was wishful thinking on my part. i'll have to look at it again.
MulberryGal 11-17-2004, 06:57 AM Nope, not just wishful thinking. I saw that look of Maddies too. If David had kissed her at that point, she wouldn't have pushed him away... She looked sad that he was only joking, for definite.

Dutchie 11-17-2004, 11:15 AM Does someone has a picture of it? Taz maybe? :)
Tazmania 11-17-2004, 03:36 PM Picture of the kiss , I don't have one of the look (yet)
CindyK 11-18-2004, 12:26 AM I think this is the look she gave him following the bedroom comment.....
http://www.davidandmaddie.com/goodstuff/3/3-mttc1.jpg
marla 11-18-2004, 12:42 AM yes, cindyk- that's the look i remember.
i really thought david was very serious about the bedroom until he got that look.
what i thought i saw was this kind of lovely-back and forth-opening and closing between the two.
Dutchie 11-18-2004, 03:54 AM hmmmm, I donno.....maybe I have to watch the whole scene again to see that "look"
kismet 11-18-2004, 11:41 AM I loved "the look".
I always took the look to mean "David - I'm being very serious here. Don't make jokes."

Yeah, that's the look I'm seeing in the picture.
Not the "I-want-you-right-now-right-here-look":happyface :D (can it BE any longer hehe:p )
That's how I took it too, Kismet. It was a big step for Maddie to confront him with "What are we going to do?" I don't think he knew how to respond, so he did what came natural which was to proposition her. After she gave him that look, he backed off real fast, realizing that his usual suggestive remarks wouldn't cut it this time.
CindyK 11-19-2004, 03:57 PM I sorta agree and sorta disagree. I think she gave him the glare eyes...."That is just what I expect from you." But I also think David's wit and charm to kid around in a situation like this is part of why she enjoys his company so much. So she gives him the glare eyes because that is their game to play...him flirty and her resistant. That is part of the "but we....we...." that Maddie can't express verbally, yet David understands.
So she may show her displeasure as part of her usual reaction to his comments, but I also think she is amused by him and charmed.
I think this is a fantastic episode :D it is like 2 for the price of 1 with all the serious, emotional stuff followed by the most hilarious chase scene. I think that the show works best when it is balanced like this. Also now we see Maddie's side of the story introducing balance again.
Brilliant stuff
SweetCakes 02-12-2005, 02:45 PM I love that kiss on the trunk! It's so tender and sweet *sighs*
I really like the bit in the van when David is doing the Dating Game thing. I can't help but smile at Maddie's face because she can't help but laugh at him.
Though I have to say, my favourite line in this episode comes from Agnes when Sam visits Blue Moon:
Maddie: Miss Dipesto. [Agnes ignores her] Miss Dipesto, the telephone.
Agnes: [Not breaking from her stare] It's right there.
Tazmania 02-12-2005, 03:15 PM Yes Emma that one is a killer!
I love that line!
That's called HUMOR with a big H!
gypsygem81 02-13-2005, 06:16 AM This was a great episode! I liked it a lot more than Sam and Dave cause it was a lot funnier - I missed the humour from Sam and Dave and found it a bit too dark and depressing. I can't wait for I'm Curious Maddie today! Gonna have to set my video cause I'm going round my parent's for Sunday roast (can't turn that down), so I shall have to wait til I get back tonight.

kismet 02-14-2005, 10:21 AM Did anyone else like this line?:
"Take the beltway around this one, bucko!"
Tazmania 02-14-2005, 02:43 PM Kis I also wondered ....who made that up??!!
MulberryGal 02-25-2005, 09:42 AM I loved that line!! Didn't Herbert say that to Sam when he came into the office?
Mul
kismet 02-25-2005, 10:44 AM Yup. That ol' Viola was showing a little jealousy. Of course, Agness wasn't helping the situation. She was a little indisposed (with Sam).
MulberryGal 02-25-2005, 12:09 PM Yep, I love the fact that Viola is defensive of David and Maddie and what they have, and just doesn't want Sam around. He also doesn't like the way Agnes stares at Sam either!!!

ryangie97 08-25-2005, 04:24 PM I watched this one again last night. Def. one of my favorites. And yes the trunk scene was so sweet. "I hate you too Maddie Hayes, I've always hated you."
Anyone else notice at the beginning when Bert bursts in to Maddie's office and makes comment about and entire night of betrothed bliss and says know what I mean? Maddie says "No I don't." Think maybe this was explaining her night with Sam was not that exciting. I don't know just seemed that way to me.
marla 08-27-2005, 02:32 AM i also think that maddie didn't find sam exciting.
but...
i also think that david was serious when he said 'there's always the bedroom'.
and nobody agreed with me on that!
even though i only saw these episodes once, i still stand by my guns
to me
maddie was not excited by sam
and
david was serious.
gypsygem81 08-27-2005, 04:15 AM I don't think Maddie found Sam particularly exciting either, just safe. And I think David was half serious - it was his flippant style to let her know what was really on his mind making it sound like a joke.

Maybe because we all think Sam is boring we want Maddie to think that too? And I also agree that David probably was serious, its just the way he expresses himself
marla 08-28-2005, 08:57 AM you know, i liked sam and didn't find him boring at all.
he looks good on paper:
self made man
bright
i have this thing about astronauts
you can take him anywhere, and he wouldn't be embarrassing
also he's very much a guy
he can throw a punch almost as well as maddie
he's passionate
and at the same time
he's laid back
he makes lamb, for when maddie comes home from work
i think sam to me is in the scene, if i remember it right, when david came to maddie's house and sam answered the door, shirt unbuttoned, very sexy, and while he was being polite to david, sam also did not move one inch out of the doorway.
best of all he knew when the party was over, and left, no muss, no fuss.
i can understand maddie's quandry. sam really was a perfect, sexy character.
i just don't think he was as sexy In bed, as david was Out of bed.
Maybe I should have qualified my comment and said that we find Sam boring compared to David ;)
BSDDomi 08-31-2005, 11:34 AM I think what she was trying to 'say' with that look was "why am I not surprised this is coming out of your mouth. I certainly did not expect you to say anything different" - definitely not the I want you right here look. It was more like the 'good ol David, same thing all over again' look.
gypsygem81 09-01-2005, 02:09 AM When I first saw these episodes, I actually quite liked Sam; he did have a lot going for him, as Marla pointed out. I think I've grown to dislike him since watching the rest of the show and finding out that D&M don't actually get together in the end. I think when I watched it the first time, I really thought they would do, eventually, so I didn't mind him that much. So now I know they don't, I just hate everybody who ever got in their way!!

Dutchie 09-01-2005, 06:50 AM Yuck, I hated Sam and now everytime I see Mark Harmon on tv I just say, Yuck not Sam!
It's not Mark's falt, really. It's just that the first character I saw him play was Sam, and the second one a murderer. Doesn't really draw a nice picture of him in my head ;) I'm glad he left so that David and Maddie could finally be together. Maybe, if it wasn't for Sam, they would still be bantering today. Thanks to Sam, David came really close to loosing Maddie, and that woke him up to do something.
kismet 09-01-2005, 08:40 AM I still like to watch Mark Harmon, although he is not one of my favorite actors. I find him slightly wooden sometimes. I liked him in a show called Reasonable Doubts in the 90's. I do like to "look" at him because I find him handsome.
I don't seem to carry the same resentment towards him that I still carry towards Virginia Madsen. I hated Annie - I disliked Sam.
In the beginning Sam comes off as nice i think but once Sam realizes that David is not just MAddie's business partner he changes his attitude. He feels like this guy is going to mess up his plans to marry Maddie and he finds every way to put David down and he does become a jerk in the process but in the beginning he seems nice. He evens tells David that he likes him in the scene in his bedroom when he tells David about the proposal. Maybe he really did like David in the beginning but now he is a threat to him. Well we know who won there and it is too bad after everything Maddie and David went through with Sam that they don't end up together in the end.
Dutchie 09-01-2005, 07:38 PM ooh yeah, Annie too. The first time I ever saw Virginia Madsen act was with Annie. The second time she was stealing someones husband. Doesn't leave a good picture in my head. You know the rest ;)
dreams200377 09-01-2005, 09:41 PM UGH, don't even get me started on Virginia Madsen. She's probably the nicest person, but sometimes when you see someone in a certain role, it leaves a bad taste. To this day, I can't watch anything with her. All I have to say is, Annie...YUK!!!
Dutchie 09-02-2005, 03:04 AM EXACTLY!
Same thing with Mark Harmon for me, and I do think he's a nice person.
