View Full Version : Yoko Ono fans?

are there any other Yoko Ono fans in here?

She is one of my favorite artists and I feel she has gotten such a bum rap because some Beatle fans can't handle the fact that Lennon and McCartney were drifting apart, and would rather just place the blame on Yoko.

I think Yoko is very underrated. Some of her early music is unlistenable, but I think after about 1973 or so, her music began to get excellent, and she's never lost her edge in 30 years. Her voice is definately an acquired taste, but I think once you get used to it, you fall in love with it.

If you have a "Yoko sucks because she broke up The Beatles" attitude, please refrain from saying it in here. She's definately one of the few renaissance women in music, and at age 71, is STILL making music that rivals people 40 years younger than her.

Screaming banshee is an apt decription! No, the Beatles were going to go their separate ways anyway. But Yoko is not a singer!
Holy Moly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A bum rap?! She is absolutely an untalented singer!(did I say singer?) Screaming Mimi is more like it! John must have been under the influence in thinking that she had/has any musical talent! Give me a break!

I think she's been given a bum rap as far as people saying she broke up The Beatles. The Beatles would have broken up anyway, Yoko or not.

She seems like a cool person. I'm not much of a fan of her music, though.

oh, so Yoko's untalented because she doesn't have a great voice? I guess that means Bob Dylan sucks too, right? Tom Waits must also be atrocious and untalented too, right?

If Yoko sucks so badly as a songwriter, why did a bunch of artists record her songs (HER songs.. nothing with John) on a tribute album several years back and many of the critics who decryed the songs when Yoko sang them came around and admitted she has some damn good songs when hearing other peoples interpretations.

At this point, at age 71 in the year 2004... Yoko is STILL on the cutting edge. I respect that, whereas people like McCartney and Jagger have all but given up and are now just making standard dinosaur rock (Bowie was going that route but ended up snapping out of it). Blueprint For A Sunrise was a superior album to Driving Rain, and Yoko has a decade on Paul.

If you go into Yoko's music expecting The Beatles, you're going to hate it. If you go into it and are a fan of someone like Prince or David Bowie, you might like it IF YOU OPEN YOUR EARS AND MIND.

One of the coolest guitar licks I've ever heard is on the Yoko Ono song "Walking On Thin Ice." John laid it down the night he died.

Get over your hatred for Yoko, it's been almost 35 years anyways, and SHE'S STILL HERE.

Yes, Yoko IS underrated because of people like you who hate her because "she broke up the Beatles", and have NEVER HEARD ANY MUSIC POST 1971 come in and try to say her music is garbage, when they haven't even heard anything she's done in the past 30 years. She has grown considerably as an artist except people FEAR her so they don't even bother to give her a shot.

I hate it when people say that "she has no talent" when the Season Of Glass, Rising and Blueprint For A Sunrise albums do nothing but prove that opinion wrong, but people come into Yoko with such a hatred that they won't bother to give her stuff a shot because they think John and Paul would've recorded more albums. LINDA WAS JUST AS MUCH A PART OF THE BREAKUP AS YOKO!

Just like Yoko said in a recorded interview, "I was respected in the art world, but once I married John, I was villified. Becuase I was Asian and because I am not a quiet woman. I was trashed, drug through the mud and went from being 'performance artist Yoko Ono' to 'that ugly Jap *****', why? because John and I loved each other"

She sucks but the truth is if she hadn't been married to John Lennon nobody would know who she was at all and sadly there would be no Barenaked Ladies song about her LOL

I like Yoko better than BNL period. Their stuff was cute like the first time I heard it and now I can't stand them.

And while I don't think Yoko would be famous like she is... she would still be famous in art-house circles.

I find it shocking you love Sarah and Alanis and then hate Yoko? Yoko is regarded nowadays as a pioneer of the "women in rock" movement

Yeah, I like Linda's singing voice. I haven't heard much of her singing, but I have heard the Wings song Eat At Home in which she sings some background vocals.

I haven't heard Yoko's music, so I can't say whether I think she's a good singer or not.

Like I said, I'm not much of a fan of Yoko's music, but I think she's a cool person and John's soulmate.

A lot of people didn't like her - and still don't - because she's eccentric, as all great artists are, and (I'm going to get a lot of flack for this) because she's Japanese. I think closed-minded people harbored hatred for her because she was an Asian woman marrying a caucasian man.

Anyway, contrary to popular belief, she's not a "dragon lady," she didn't brainwash John and she didn't break up the Beatles.

I agree with all that. I also think people hate Yoko because she's not some predictable pop singer. She married the most famous member of perhaps the most mainstream successful band in history, so people come into her music expecting it to sound like Abbey Road... and then it doesn't. She has never cared about being a "pop singer", and people resent Yoko for the fact that she was never one to tame her act to make some pop fans happy. She never cared about that at all. She has certainly had her share of "poppy" type music, like her stuff on Double Fantasy, and the It's Alright/Starpeace albums, but for the most part, she's never tried to be a "pop star".

I think all in all, she is one of the most fascinating artists around. I can understand why she wouldn't be a lot of peoples cup of tea... but I don't understand why people decide "she has no talent" because 1. they don't like her singing voice (even tho Bob Dylan can't really sing either... nobody denies that talent) and 2. most of her music is really complex and takes many many listenings to really understand. I think Yoko was very much a precursor to Bjork, if you can "get" Bjork, you can get Yoko IMO.

Plus, like it or not, she was a muse to Lennon during some of the greatest Beatles material.

lol. You do know if it wasn't for someone like Yoko to bring feminism into music... people like Avril wouldn't even exist, right?

If you want an "angry woman", listen to Yoko... the emotions in her songs were REAL. Not Matrix-produced pop songs that 15 year old girls who are breaking up with their boyfriend can identify with.

the demo for I Don't Know Why (which Yoko wrote and recorded the day after Lennon's murder) is a far more intense song than ANYTHING Avril has recorded so far. You can feel everything Yoko is going through with the lyrics and the way she performed the song. You feel the denial, you feel the pain, you feel the anger, you feel how she feels like breaking everything. 75% of Yoko's catalogue gives the audience the ability to feel the same way, every song she writes is special to her, she lays out her heart and soul on every song, and to even think "he was a sk8er boi, he said see ya later boy" is even in the same level of the quality Yoko gives out, shows once again that you don't even know who Yoko Ono is, you just dislike her because of who she was married to. You know she's an old Japanese lady who was married to John Lennon, but you don't KNOW Yoko Ono.

You like "women who rock"? if it wasn't for someone like Yoko who showed that women can make rock music and bare their heart and souls and NOT try to be sexy, Avril would probably be singing r&b instead.

And I really don't care about Yoko Ono, I decided to crap on your thread like you did the Avril one. I said The Beatles thing cause you said not to. I was being a rebellious skater, duh. Now if you'll excuse me I must go listen to Radio Disney and watch TRL.

even people who hate Yoko admit she looks great for her age. She still has a 40 year old body at 71. Plus, Yoko circa 1969 really didn't look much different than Avril does now, save the Asian eyes.

You might be shocked, this will shock the hell out of you, but I actually kinda liked Avril when she first came out, then I realized what an arrogant poseur she is after reading interviews. Anyone who presents themselves as punk and has no idea who the Sex Pistols are, but then loves The Goo Goo Dolls, does not deserve a recording contract. You will never find an up-and-coming rapper who doesn't know who Run-DMC and LL Cool J are, and if they didn't, they would be kicked out of the hip hop community for such ignorance. And she has a real nasty attitude.

you forget that the Avril thing was after you went into both George Harrison and Billy Joel's threads (even 10 year olds can admit that in the long run, their contributions to the music biz far overshadows Avril's 2 years) and started trashing them. If you leave our threads alone, we'd do the same respect to you. If you can't, then we'll make fun of Avril for being a corporate manufactured puppet.

Listen, Yoko sucking has nothing to do with The Beatles or John Lennon or anything else. She sucks on her own level.

The fact that she was with Lennon is the only reason we even know about her crap act.

You can love her all you want, but with a finite time on the planet earth I'll be damned if I waste a second listening to that trash.
