The guitarist for the B-52's, Ricky Wilson died of AIDS ten days after Rock Hudson's death, on October 12th, 1985.
The tragedy sent the band into a tailspin. The band was all about a celebration of fun, and sex was an underlying theme of that celebration. It was party music, the kind of dance music you could meet chicks to, or guys. It was the house music of Take-your-mind-off-your-problems-zone, the ultimate Happy Hour toonage.

But now it was all over. The party was no longer fun--the grim spectre of death lingered in the air as intimacy and pleasure now equalled death. The sexual revolution was now officially over. Who were going to be the next victims of the new Masque of the Red Death?

Several of American television's most legendary music presenters had faded from the scene by 1985. Jimmy O'Neil ended his series Shindig in 1966. Ed Sullivan retired in 1971. Now, in 1985, it was Dick Clark's turn to go gently into that good night.

http://www.radiohof.org/cards/dickclark.jpg

America's oldest teenager ended his 28-year run on American Bandstand. Clark had presented America's hottest pop acts for twenty-eight years, starting in Philadelphia on ABC affiliate WFIL-TV (now WPVI-TV) and continuing nationally from Los Angeles. In 1985, with MTV a success and VH-1 starting up, cable television was providing 24-hour popular music programming, and a Saturday afternoon pop show like American Bandstand seemed hopelessly out of date.

Dick Clark would continue as a television producer and remain a pre-eminent pop-music historian, but the show that made him a legend was now, ironically, history.

As mentioned in the previous post, VH-1 started in 1985.

http://www.logoholic.com/jpg3/bt/vh1.jpg

Meant as a more adult, sophisticated cousin to MTV, VH-1 played more vintage rock and roll video footage from the sixties and seventies, plus artists who usually didn't appear on MTV - James Taylor, for example. It soon became a kind of MTV for baby boomers, the oldest of whom were now pushing forty.

Originally featuring on-camera hosts like Rosie O'Donnell and Don Imus, VH-1 eventually dropped them in favor of videos introduced by voice-overs, and - later - special music programming like Behind The Music. While MTV would always try to stay hip, VH-1 would, as Ian Anderson would put it, keep on living in the past. :D

Now that 1985 was officially the year of Safe Music ("Hip to be Square"), the P.M.R.C. making dance-pop safe for impressionable kiddies, hair metal safer than spandex, and Live Aid making it safe to cure the world's crises from the comfort of one's living room recliner, there was one safe-ness that seemed more necessary: safe sex.

The rock world realized it could not play as recklessly as before. Condoms were presented--and debated--as a necessary deterrent to the AIDS crisis. Even born-again Surgeon General C. Everett Coop urged the use of condoms. But the church brigades reveled in the thought of sex=death, the recipients of the HIV virus "got what they deserved"; God was "punishing them" for sin. To intervene with possible cures was to obstruct "God's judgement." But many good, kind, loving souls were dying of the disease, now in its fourth year of receiving major attention. And even many who had not had unprotected sex, such as youngster Ryan White, who had received it from a blood transfusion, were not immune. It was a health crisis that was threatening all. And the rock world began to raise awareness of the dreaded disease with ads and spokespersons such as Madonna.

It did not mean the end to sex. It just meant, be careful. Or as one condom ad announced, Don't jump without a parachute, genius.

To the rescue came a new iconic hero in the fight against the plague and other STD's: Trojan Man!!

Aphaville was one of the New Romantics bands of Britain who had a big hit with "Forever Young".

Forever Young

Let’s dance in style, lets dance for a while
Heaven can wait we’re only watching the skies
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst
Are you going to drop the bomb or not?

Let us die young or let us live forever
We don’t have the power but we never say never
Sitting in a sandpit, life is a short trip
The music’s for the sad men

Can you imagine when this race is won
Turn our golden faces into the sun
Praising our leaders we’re getting in tune
The music’s played by the madmen

Forever young, I want to be forever young
Do you really want to live forever, forever and ever

Some are like water, some are like the heat
Some are a melody and some are the beat
Sooner or later they all will be gone
Why don’t they stay young

It’s so hard to get old without a cause
I don’t want to perish like a fading horse
Youth is like diamonds in the sun
And dimonds are forever

So many adventures couldn’t happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams are swinging out of the blue
We let them come true

On the opposite end of the rock and roll spectrum was...a rock and roll band, The Del Fuegos, a straight up traditional rocking band whose 1985 album, Boston, Mass. featured a college radio hit that crept its way to mainstream, "Don't Run Wild." The band took its name from the southernmost region of the globe excluding Antarctica, the Tierra del Fuego, on the southern tip of South America. This was to indicate the band was "down low", so low in fact that their lead singer admitted on MTV that he acquired his cap by stealing it off a policeman's head!

Don't Run Wild

Oh baby whats gone wrong
You don't laugh on the phone like you used too
Have I been gone too long
Wheres the love that I've gotten used too

All the good times we had
Our dreams might take a while
So baby don't you run
Don't run wild

Trees fly by in a far away car
Wondering when I'll see you again

The tv's on the sound turned down
All the letters that I've tried to send

All the good times we had
Seems our dreams might take a while
So baby don't you run
Don't run wild, don't run wild, don't run wild
Don't run, don't run wild

Don't run wild, don't run wild, don't run wild
Don't run, don't run wild
Don't run wild, don't run wild, don't run wild
Don't run wild, don't run wild, don't run wild
Don't run, don't leave me child

Back in Britain, one band hitting the charts was Dead Or Alive, whose androgynous frontman Pete Burns sang the hit "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)". As much of the 80's was all about the triumph of style over substance, so was the short-lived stardom of a frontman who was known more for his looks than his actual talent. Was Burns gay? Possibly, which would explain his success to the eager gay dance crowd who relished disposable pop (in much the way disco had done ten years earlier).

You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)

If I, I get to know your name
Well if I, could trace your private number, baby

All I know is that to me
You look like you're lots of fun
Open up your loving arms
I want some,want some

I set my sights on you
(and no one else will do)
And I, I've got to have my way now, baby

All I know is that to me
You look like you're having fun
Open up your loving arms
Watch,out here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

I got to be your friend now, baby
And I would like to move in a little bit closer

All I know is that to me
You look like you're lots of fun
Open up your loving arms
Watch out, here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round...

One British singer/songwriter, Robyn Hitchcock, formed a band called The Egyptians and released a series of albums with bizarre lyrics, including 1985's Fegmania! One pop hit stands out from the album:

Heaven

You've got heaven
Heaven in your hand
You've got heaven
Running through your land
Why don't you fight for it?
You're right for it, you know
Why don't you kill for it
Get ill for it also?

You've got heaven
You've got heaven
You've got arms and you've got legs and you've got heaven

Heaven in your eyes
You've got heaven
Don't you recognize?
And when you wake for it
You'll ache for it all night
And when you dream for it
You'll scream for it all right

You've got heaven
You've got heaven
You've got arms and you've got legs and you've got heaven

You've got heaven
Every single time
You've got heaven
Every single climb
And when you seek for it
You peak for it all day
And when you choose for it
You'll ooze for it, I'll say

You've got heaven
You're just heaven
You're just heaven
You've got arms and you've got legs and you've got heaven
You've got arms and you've got legs and you've got heaven
You've got arms, legs, heaven
You've got arms, you've got legs, you've got heaven
You've got arms
You've got legs, and you've got heaven
Arms, use your legs, and you've got heaven

As a former member of 70's British band The Soft Boys, Robyn Hitchcock went solo in the early 80's with a Beatlesque style of singing and songwriting--with a difference: His songs took on this bizarre twisted quality, and often he would preface his songs in concert with a laughably macabre monologue.
His warped sense of humor made him a favorite among alternative fans everywhere.

The Dream Academy were one British band that incorporated traditional Celtic music in their tunes, most notably
"Life In a Northern Town".

Life In a Northern Town

A Salvation Army Band played
And Children drunk lemonade
And the morning lasted all day,
All day
And through an open window came
Like Sinatra in a younger day,
Pushing the town away
Ah-

(chant)
Ah hey ma ma ma
Life in a northern town.

They sat on the stoney ground
And he took out a cigarette out
And everyone else came down
To listen.
He said "In winter 1963
It felt like the world would freeze
With John F. Kennedy
And The Beatles."

(Chant)
Ah- hey ma ma ma
Life in a northern town.
Ah hey ma ma ma
All the work shut down.

The evening had turned to rain
Watch the water roll down the drain,
As we followed him down
To the station
And though he never would wave goodbye,
You could see it written in his eyes
As the train pulled out of sight
Bye-bye

(Chant)
Ah hey ma ma ma
Life in a northern town.
Ah hey ma ma ma
Life in a northern town.

Another Irish band contributing to a sort of Celtic folk revival in alternative music was The Waterboys, led by lead vocalist Mike Scott. Their 1985 album This Is the Sea featured the hit, "The Whole of the Moon".

The Whole of the Moon

I pictured a rainbow
you held in your hands
I had flashes
but you saw then plan
I wondered out in the world for years
while you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
you saw the whole of the moon!
The whole of the moon!

You were there at the turnstiles
with the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars
and you know how it feels
To reach too high
too far
Too soon
you saw the whole of the moon!

I was grounded
while you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truths
you cut through lies
I saw the rain-dirty valley
you saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
you saw the whole of the moon!

I spoke about wings
you just flew
I wondered, I guessed, and I tried
you just knew
I sighed
but you swooned
I saw the crescent
you saw the whole of the moon!
The whole of the moon!

With a torch in your pocket
and the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder
and you know how it feels
To reach too high
too far
Too soon
you saw the whole of the moon!
The whole of the moon!

Unicorns and cannonballs,
palaces and piers,
Trumpets, towers, and tenements,
wide oceans full of tears,
Flag, rags, ferry boats,
scimitars and scarves,
Every precious dream and vision
underneath the stars

You climbed on the ladder
with the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
blazing your trail
Too high
too far
Too soon
you saw the whole of the moon!

Don't Bang the Drum

Well here we are in a special place
what are you gonna do here?
Now we stand in a special place
what will you do here?
What show of soul are we gonna get from you?
It could be deliverance, or history
under these skies so blue
could be something true,
But if I know you you'll bang the drum
like monkeys do

Here we are in a fabulous place
What are you gonna dream here?
We are standing in this fabulous place
What are you gonna play here?
I know you love the high life, you love to leap around
You love to beat your chest and make your sound
but not here man - this is sacred ground
with a Power flowing through
And if know you you'll bang the drum
like monkeys do

Here we stand on a rocky shore
Your father stood here before you
I can see his ghost explore you
I can feel the sea implore you
Not to pass on by
Not to walk on by
and not to try
Just to let it come
Don't bang the drum
Just let it come
Don't bang the drum
Just let it come
Don't bang the drum
Do you know how to let it come now?
don't bang the drum
Just let it come now..
don't bang the drum...
Don't bang the drum
Don't bang the drum
Don't bang the drum
Don't bang the drum
Don't bang the drum
Don't bang the drum
Don't bang the drum
Don't bang the drum
Don't bang the drum

One Irish band was totally immersed in traditional Irish and Celtic music and soft pop since their beginning in the early 70's, Clannad. Their 1985 release, Macalla, also featured Bono assisting on vocals on "In a Lifetime."

In a Lifetime

hard to tell

or recognise a sign

to see me through

a warning sign

first the thunder

satisfied, if the past it will not lie

then the storm

torn assunder

the future you and I get blown away

in the storm

in a lifetime

and as the rain it falls

begin again, as the storm breaks through

heavy in my heart

believe the light in you

so the light shines in you

without color, faded and worn

torn asunder in the storm

unless the sound has faded from your soul

unless it disappears

first the thunder

selfish storm

then the storm

hold on the inside

torn asunder

one life

in the storm

in a lifetime

in a lifetime

Not all Irish folk-rock bands were of the soft pop variety. The Pogues were one raucous band that was great for drinking and raving a grand old time with in a pub with a pint or two of Guiness. Their second album, Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash was produced by Elvis Costello, and their female lead singer Cait O'Riordan eventually married him, leaving the other lead singer, the constantly drunk Shane McGowan to front the band. :drink: :faint:

McGowan has the worst teeth of anyone in all of rock and roll.

A Pair of Brown Eyes

One summer evening drunk to hell
I sat there nearly lifeless
An old man in the corner sang
Where the water lilies grow
And on the jukebox Johnny sang
About a thing called love
And it's how are you kid and what's your name
And how would you bloody know?
In blood and death 'neath a screaming sky
I lay down on the ground
And the arms and legs of other men
Were scattered all around
Some cursed, some prayed, some prayed then cursed
Then prayed and bled some more
And the only thing that I could see
Was a pair of brown eyes that was looking at me
But when we got back, labeled parts one to three
There was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me

And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
For a pair of brown eyes

I looked at him he looked at me
All I could do was hate him
While Ray and Philomena sang
Of my elusive dream
I saw the streams, the rolling hills
Where his brown eyes were waiting
And I thought about a pair of brown eyes
That waited once for me
So drunk to hell I left the place
Sometimes crawling sometimes walking
A hungry sound came across the breeze
So I gave the walls a talking
And I heard the sounds of long ago
From the old canal
And the birds were whistling in the trees
Where the wind was gently laughing

And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
For a pair of brown eyes

Having left the Clash for a few years now, Mick Jones returned with a new band, Big Audio Dynamite, which incorporated more sampled, electronic music with heavy rhythms and guitars. Also on the album were samples of dialogue from classic movies such as "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

Medicine Show

Covered wagon medicine show
Take you to the place where the healing flows
Weak in spirit we got the juice
Wont save your soul it`ll shine your shoes
Treated king to kangaroo
Santa Fe to Timbuktu
Don`t be fooled by imitation
This is the stuff that cured a nation
We took the tube and the high plains too
Never stopped long just passing through
A drop of the laughter of the maids of France
Makes a hopeless cripple dance

It was really vile weather
When we got to tarred and feathered
You could hear the six guns sound
As they chased us out of town

In India we`re all the rave
Discovered that its great as aftershave
Dropped in the sea just off Japan
Swapped 20 bottles for an aqua-walkman
Immunity from ridicule
Improves your brains if you`re a fool
And I read in the Middle East
They traded some for a hostage release
Now if you`re bald it`ll give you hair
If you got straight trousers it`ll give you flares
Feeling up you`ll get depressed
Out of style here`s a brand new dress

It was really vile weather
When we got to tarred and feathered
You could hear the six guns sound
As they chased us out of town

The stuff we sell is just the best
Passing all consumer test
Days of heaven nights of sin
Voodoo stick and sharks fin
When all around you seems like hell
Just one sip will make you well
Multipurpose in a jar
If you ain`t ill it`ll fix your car
In days of yore for all bad feelings
Washing socks and stripping ceilings
Nowadays its used medicinally
For all known human malady

It was really vile weather
When we got to tarred and feathered
You could hear the six guns sound
As they chased us out of town

Guaranteed don`t you know
Money back?
You`ll get a no!
It`s the one and only medicine show

The Bottom Line

The horses are on the track

Theres a new dance that`s going around
When the hits start flying you gotta get down
All the young people dance round the square
That old time groove is really nowhere

When you reach the bottom line
The only thing to do is climb
Pick yourself up of the floor
Don`t know what you`re waiting for

A dance to the tune of economic decline
Is when you do the bottom line
Nagging questions always remain
Why did it happen and who was to blame?

When you reach the bottom line
The only thing to do is climb
Pick yourself up of the floor
Don`t know what you`re waiting for

They`ve been doing it down at the zoo
And I can show ya heres what to do
All of the States and over UK
Even the Soviets are swinging away

When you reach the bottom line
The only thing to do is climb
Pick yourself up of the floor
Don`t know what you`re waiting for

The road aheads` clear as a motorway
Give us this day our daily bread and send us on our way
Perchance to dream or take a holiday
Romeo oh Romeo
You gotta have your say

So when you reach the bottom line
The only thing to do is climb
Pick yourself up off the floor
Anything you want is yours

When you reach the bottom line
The only thing to do is climb
Pick yourself up of the floor
Don`t know what you`re waiting for

So when you reach the bottom line
The only thing to do is climb
Pick yourself up off the floor
Anything you want is yours

Part two - Part two
I`m gonna take you to part two part two

To prove that Joe Strummer and the boys could still have hits without Mick Jones, the (so-called) Clash released Cut the Crap, which, according to record buyers, was summed up by the last word in the title. There was nothing very compelling
the "new, improved" Clash could come out with on this limp, lackluster album. However, two songs did seem to gain some attention, "This Is England" and "Three Card Trick." Other than that, it was all over for the once mighty "Band That Mattered."

This Is England

I hear a gang fire on a human factory farm
Are they howling out or doing somebody harm
On a catwalk jungle somebody grabbed my arm
A voice spoke so cold it matched the weapon in her palm

This is England
This knife of Sheffield steel
This is England
This is how we feel

Time on his hands freezing in those clothes
He won't go for the carrot
They beat him by the pole
Some sunny day confronted by his soul
He's out at sea, too far off, he can't go home

This is England
What we're supposed to die for
This is England
And we're never gonna cry no more

Black shadow of the Vincent
Falls on a Triumph line
I got my motorcycle jacket
But I'm walking all the time
South Atlantic wind blows
Ice from a dying creed
I see no glory
When will we be free

This is England
We can chain you to the rail
This is England
We can kill you in a jail

The British boots go kick them
Got 'em in the head
Police ain't watchin'
The newspapers been read
Who cares to protest
A (???) in the eye like a flare
Out came the batons and
The British warned themselves

This is England
The land of (il)legal dances
This is England
Land of a thousand stances
This is England
This knife of Sheffield steel
This is England
This is how we feel
This is England
This is England

One British pop musician made it a point to remain positive in his lyrics, Howard Jones. His 1985 album Dream Into Action featured such happy hits as "Life In One Day", "Things Can Only Get Better", and "No One Is to Blame."

Life In One Day

The old man said to me
Said don't always take life so seriously
Play the flute
And dance and sing your song

Try and enjoy the here and now
The future will take care of itself somehow
The grass is never greener over there
Time will wear away the stone
Gets the hereditary bone

CHORUS:
Don't try to live your life in one day
Don't go speed your time away
Don't try to live your life in one day
Don't go speed your time away

The old man said to me
Said you can't change the world single handedly
Raise a glass enjoy the scenery
Pretend the water is champagne
And fill my glass again and again
While the wolves are gathering round your door
Time will wear away the stone
Gets the hereditary bone

CHORUS

The old man said to me
Said don't always take life so seriously
Play the flute
And dance and sing your song

Try and enjoy the here and now
The future will take care of itself somehow
The grass is never greener over there
Time will wear away the stone
Gets the hereditary bone

I tried to live my life in one day
Don't go speed your time away

I bit off more than I can chew
Only so much you can do

Wolves are gathering round my door
Ask them in and invite some more

I tried to live my life in one day
Don't go speed your time away

Don't try to live your life in one day

Things Can Only Get Better

I love you whether or not you love me
I love you even if you think that I don't
Sometimes I find you doubt my love for you, but I don't mind
Why should I mind, Why should I mind

Chorus
What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway
What is Love anyway, does anybody love anybody anyway

Can anybody love anyone so much that they will never fear
Never worry never be sad
The answer is they cannot love this much nobody can
This is why I don't mind you doubting

And maybe love is letting people be just what they want to be
The door always must be left unlocked
To love when circumstance may lead someone away from you
And not to spend the time just doubting

No One Is To Blame

You can look at the menu but you just can’t eat
You can feel the cushions but you can’t have a seat
You can dip your foot in the pool but you can’t have a swim
You can feel the punishment but you can’t commit the sin
And you want her and she wants you
We want everyone

And you want her and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
You can build a mansion but you just can’t live in it
You’re the fastest runner but you’re not allowed to win
Some break the rules
And live to count the cost
The insecurity is the thing that won’t get lost
And you want her and she wants you
We want everyone

And you want her and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
You can see the summit but you can’t reach it
It’s the last piece of the puzzle but you just can’t make it fit
Doctor says you’re cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain
And you want her and she wants you
We want everyone

And you want her and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame

New Song
from 1983

I've been waiting for so long
To come here now and sing this song
Don't be fooled by what you see
Don't be fooled by what you hear

This is a song to all my friends
They take the challenge to their hearts
Challenging preconceived ideas
Saying goodbye to long standing fears

Don't crack up, bend your brain, see both sides
Throw off your mental chains

I don't wanna be hip and cool
I don't wanna play by the rules
Not under the thumb of the cynical few
Or laden down by the doom crew

What Is Love
from Human's Lib, 1983

Til Tuesday was a band whose only hit was "Voices Carry", but the sole attraction of the band was the sexy platinum blonde singer Aimee Mann. The band did not last as long as her solo career has. She must have gotten tired of being typecast as being the "new wave chick." As in the video where the brute boyfriend says, "What's with the hair?"

Aimee Mann has had a successfully gone solo, at least by creating music and lyrics on her own terms. But you won't find her
on MTV.

Voices Carry

I'm in the dark, I'd like to read his mind
but I'm frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he's thinking of
to tear him away
when I tell him that I'm falling in love
why does he say

hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

I try so hard not to get upset
because I know all the trouble I'll get
oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
and something to fear
and I try so hard to keep it inside
so no one can hear

hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

He wants me
but only part of the time
He wants me
if he can keep me in line
hush hush
keep it down now
voices carry

hush hush, darling, she might overhear
oh, no-voices carry
he said shut up he said shut up
oh God can't you keep it down
voices carry
I wish he would let me talk.

Animotion was another band fronted by a sexy female (and who WASN'T in the 1980's?) who had a hit with the song "Obsession." Her name was Cynthia Rhodes.

Obsession

You are an obsession
I cannot sleep
I am your possession
Unopened at your feet
There's no balance
No equality
Be still I will not accept defeat

I will have you
Yes, I will have you
I will find a way
and I will have you
Like a butterfly
A wild butterly
I will collect you and capture you

*You are an obsession
You're my obsession
Who do you want me to be
To make you sleep with me
You are an obsession
You're my obsession
Who do you want me to be
To make you sleep with me

I feed you I drink you
My day and my night
I need you I need you
By sun or candlelight
You protest
You want to leave
Stay
Oh, there's no alternative

Your face appears again
I see the beauty there
But I see danger
Stranger beware
A circumstance
In your naked dreams
Your affection
is not what it seems

Chorus

My fantasy has turned to madness
And all my goodness
Has turned to badness
My need to possess you
Has consumed my soul
My life is trembling
I have no control

I will have you
Yes, I will have you
I will find a way
and I will have you
Like a butterfly
A wild butterly
I will collect you and capture you

Chorus

Former Yaz vocalist Alison Moyet released her solo album Alf. Unfortunately, her career didn't skyrocket as she had done with her previous album, but her songs were very decent.

Divine Intervention

What can I do to make light of this dull, dull, day
What switch can I pull to illuminate the way
Show me one direction
I will not question again
For a warm injection
Is all I need to calm the pain
We all need a love resurrection
Just a little divine intervention
We all need a love resurrection
Just a little divine intervention

What seed must I sow to replenish this barren land
Teach me to harvest I want you to grow in my hand
Lets be optimistic, lets say that we won't toil in vain
If we pull together we'll never fall apart again

We all need a love resurrection
Just a little divine intervention
We all need a love resurrection
Just a little divine intervention

Show me one direction
I will not question again
For a warm injection
Is all I need to calm the pain
We all need a love resurrection
Just a little divine intervention
We all need a love resurrection
Just a little divine intervention

From Scotland came a very traditional band with a literate front man, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, whose 1985 album Rattlesnakes featured the alternative and MTV video hit, "Perfect Skin." Who could resist the twangy jangle of that guitar and Lloyd Cole's soft-spoken vocals?

Rattlesnakes

jodie wears a hat although it hasn't rained for six days
she says a girl needs a gun these days
hey on account of all the rattlesnakes
she looks like eve marie saint in on the waterfront
she reads simone de beauvoir in her american circumstance
she's less than sure if her heart has come to stay in san jose
and her neverborn child still haunts her
as she speeds down the freeway
as she tries her luck with the traffic police
out of boredom more than spite
she never finds no trouble, she tries too hard
she's obvious despite herself
she looks like eve marie saint in on the waterfront
she says all she needs is therapy yeah
all you need is, love is all you need
jodie never sleeps 'cause there are always needles in the hay
she says that a girl needs a gun these days
hey on account of all the rattlesnakes
she looks like eve marie saint in on the waterfront
as she reads simone de beauvoir in her american circumstance
her heart, heart's like crazy paving
upside down and back to front
she says ooh, it's so hard to love
when love was your great disappointment

One of my favorite songs of the 80's:

Perfect Skin

i choose my friends only far too well
i'm up on the pavement, they're all down in the cellar
with their government grants and my i.q.
they brought me down to size, academia blues
louise is a girl, i know her well
she's up on the pavement, yes she's a weather girl
and i'm staying up here so i may be undone
she's inappropriate, but then she's much more fun and

when she smiles my way
my eyes go out in vain
she's got perfect skin
shame on you, you've got no sense of grace, shame on me
ah just in case i might come to a conclusion
other than that which is absolutely necessary
and that's perfect skin

louise is the girl with the perfect skin
she says turn on the light, otherwise it can't be seen
she's got cheekbones like geometry and eyes like sin
and she's sexually enlightened by cosmopolitan and

when she smiles my way
my eyes go out in vain
for her perfect skin
yeah that's perfect skin

she takes me down to the basement to look at her slides
of her family life, pretty weird at times
at the age of ten she looked like greta garbo
and i loved her then, but how was she to know that

when she smiles my way
my eyes go out in vain
she's got perfect skin

up eight flights of stairs to her basement flat
pretty confused huh, being shipped around like that
seems we climbed so high now we're down so low
strikes me the moral of this song must be there never has been one
speedboat
julie said we drink far too much coffee
wine and cigarettes and we never get no sleep
i first met them at a riverboat party
both of them were speeding i would say
i lived on the edge of all this indulgence
taking notes and trusting in prudence
julie said to jim why don't we jump in
while the water is cool and we are still friends
some say that they o.d.'d on leonard cohen
well i can see that river whenever i think about them
the river is cruel and the water is deep and blue
i was working then on my great unfinished novel
"please let introduce myself my name is ronald"
i was okay there until i lost my cool
now let me introduce you to the rest of the crew
it wasn't my style to find surf in my eye
it was much more my style to find sand in my eyes
though there is absolutely no truth to be discovered
albeit truth then is nothing to be found
we academics are not easily discouraged
lloyd you know wits they come three to the pound
julie said to jim look at the state we're in
it was never her intention to conclude anything
it wasn't my style to find surf in my eye
it was much more my style to find sand in my eyes
it was just not my style to find surf in my eye
it was much more my style to get sand kicked in my eyes
sand in my eyes

The Talking Heads returned from one of their greatest successes of the past year with Little Creatures, which once again gained them huge video success with songs such as "Road to Nowhere", "Stay Up Late", and "And She Was." The album cover art was created by well-known illustrator Rev. Howard Finster.

Stay Up Late

Mommy had a little baby
There he is fast asleep
He's just a little plaything
Why not wake him up?
Cute, cute, little baby
Little feet-feet, little toes
Now he's comin' to me
Crawl across the kitchen floor.

Baby, baby, please let me hold him
I wanna make him stay up all night
Sister, sister, he's just a plaything
We wanna make him stay up all night
Yeah we do

See him drink from a bottle.
See him eat from a plate.
Cute, cute as a button.
Don't you wanna make him stay up late.
And we're having fun with no money.
Little smile on his face.
Don't cha' love the little baby.
Don't you want to make him stay up late.

Chorus

Here we go (all night long)
Sister, sister (all night long)
In the playpen...woo...(all night long)
Little baby goes, ha! (all night long)
I know you want to leave me...

Why don't we pretend.
There you go, little man.
Cute, cute, why not?
Late at night, wake him up.

Chorus

Here we go (all night long)
Sister, sister...woo...
(with the television on)
Little baby goes...woo! (all night long)
Hey, hey, baby! (all night long)
And he looks so cute (all night long)
In his little red suit (all night long)

Road to Nowhere

WELL WE KNOW WHERE WE'RE GOIN'
BUT WE DON'T KNOW WHERE WE'VE BEEN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE KNOWIN'
BUT WE CAN'T SAY WHAT WE'VE SEEN
AND WE'RE NOT LITTLE CHILDREN
AND WE KNOW WHAT WE WANT
AND THE FUTURE IS CERTAIN
GIVE US TIME TO WORK IT OUT

We're on a road to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that ride to nowhere
We'll take that ride

Feelin' okay this mornin'
And you know,
We're on the road to paradise
Here we go, here we go

We're on a ride to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that ride to nowhere
We'll take that ride

Maybe you wonder where you are
I don't care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there...take you there

We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere
We're on a road to nowhere

There's a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
and it's all right, baby, it's all right

And it's very far away
But it's growing day by day
And it's all right, baby, it's all right

Would you like to come along
and you could help me sing this song?
And it's all right, baby, it's all right

They can tell you what to do
But they'll make a fool of you
And it's all right, baby, it's all right
[x2]

We're on a road to nowhere

On the cover of the Rolling Stone issue below, the headline asks the musical question: "Are the Talking Heads burned out?" One would imagine so after the past two busy years of tours and Stop Making Sense. The band had now lasted ten years together climbing the pinnacle of success. Nowhere to go but...on hiatus.

But success had not seen the last of the visionary musicians.

And She Was

Hey!

And she was lying in the grass
And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming
See the lights of a neighbor's house
Now she's starting to rise
Take a minute to concentrate
And she opens up her eyes

The world was moving she was right there with it and she was
The world was moving she was floating above it and she was
and she was

And she was drifting through the backyard
And she was taking off her dress
And she was moving very slowly
Rising up above the earth
Moving into the universe
And she's drifting this way and that
Not touching the ground at all
And she's up above the yard

The world was moving she was right there with it and she was
(Hey, hey)
The world was moving she was floating above it and she was

Hey, hey, hey

She was proud about it... no doubt about it
She isn't sure about what she's done
No time to think about what to tell him
No time to think about what she's done
And she was

Hey hey, hey hey, hey!

And she was looking at herself
And things were looking like a movie
She had a pleasant elevation
She's moving out in all directions
Oh, oh oh

Hey hey hey (repeated..)

The world was moving she was right there with it and she was
Hey, woo hoo
The world was moving she was floating above it and she was
Hey, hey

Joining the world of missing persons and she was
Missing enough to feel all right and she was

Ha ha
And she was
(repeated..)

Scritti Politti was a British dance band fronted by Green Gartside who had a hit from their 1985 album Cupid & Psyche 85 that took off on the floors: "Perfect Way."

Perfect Way

I took a backseat a backhander I took her back to her room
I better get back to the basics for you
You gotta conscience compassion you got away with the word
You gotta heart full of complacency too
I don't have a purpose omission I'm empty by definition
I got a lack girl that you'd love to be
You wanna diva a deduction you wanna do what they do
Wanna do damage that you can undo
Apart from everyone away from your love
A part of me belongs apart from all the hurt above

I got a perfect way to make a new proposition
I got a perfect way to make a justification
I got a perfect way to make a certain a maybe
I got a perfect way to make the girls go crazy

I took a day job amendment I took a liking to you
I took a page out of my rulebook for you
You wanna message a confession you wanna martyr me too
You wanna margin of error for two
Maybe tomorrow the next letter or when the weather gets better
I've got to wait here for your moon to turn blue
I made an offer an exception I made a sense out of you
You took a good look at your book but I knew
In times of tenderness in terms baby so true
Until such time as I can understand all the things you do
Want to forgive you for all the things that you do
Wanna forget how to remember with you
Maybe tomorrow the next letter or when the weather gets better
I've got to wait here for your moon to turn blue

This is a perfect way to make a new proposition
This is a perfect way to make a justification
This is a perfect way to make a certain a maybe
This is a perfect way to make the girls go crazy

Camper Van Beethoven was an underground California band fronted by vocalist David Lowery who played traditional rock with a few radical differences, such as the inclusion of a violinist. Their critically acclaimed 1985 release
Telephone Free Landslide Victory featured the hit "Take The Skinheads Bowling."

Take The Skinheads Bowling

Every day, I wake up and pray to Jah
And he increases the number of clocks by exactly one
Everybody's comin' home for lunch these days
Last night there were skinheads on my lawn

Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling

Some people say that bowling alleys got big lanes
(got big lanes, got big lanes)
Some people say that bowling alleys all look the same
(look the same, look the same)
There's not a line that goes here that rhymes with anything

I has a dream last night, but I forget what it was
I had a dream last night about you, my friend
I had a dream--I wanted to sleep next to plastic
I had a dream--I wanted to lick your knees
I had a dream--it was about nothing

Camper Van Beethoven was a band that featured many hilarious titles in their songs: "Mao Reminesces About His Days in Southern China", "Payed Vacation: Greece" and:

The Day That Lassie Went to the Moon

My little dog ran away the other day
I can't believe my little dog Lassie ran away
She packed her bags and got into a hot-air balloon
Then my little dog Lassie, she sailed off to the moon
The day, the day

That was the day that Lassie went to the moon
My little dog Lassie packed her bags and went out onto the porch
Her golden fur glistened in that sunny blue backdrop sky of Kansas

Before her stretched majestic wheat fields and over to that great city to the west
Lassie knew she had the duty to serve the youth of America and the stars above

One band that was getting some attention in 1985 on the West Coast was Suicidal Tendencies, whose 1983 debut spawned one of the biggest hardcore crossovers in music:
"Institutionalized". The L.A. band fronted by vocalist Mike Muir was a favorite among skateboarding enthusiasts who dubbed their music Skatecore. Of course, with a name like that, the P.M.R.C. brigades would find more things wrong with the band than to examine the situation in society that causes the need to write the following lyrics.

Institutionalized

Sometimes I try to do things and it just doesn't work out the way I wanted
to.
I get real frustrated and I try hard to do it and I take my time and it
doesn't work out the way I wanted to.
It's like I concentrate real hard and it doesn't work out
Everything I do and everything I try never turns out
It's like I need time to figure these things out
But there's always someone there going

Hey Mike:
You know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately. You
know, maybe you should get away and maybe you should talk about it, maybe
you'll feel a lot better

And I go:
No it's okay, you know I'll figure it out, just leave me alone I'll figure
it out. You know I'll just work by myself.

And they go:
Well you know if you want to talk about it I'll be here you know and you'll
probably feel a lot better if you talk about it.

And I go:
No I don't want to I'm okay, I'll figure it out myself and they just keep
bugging me and they just keep bugging me and it builds up inside and it
builds up inside.

So you're gonna be institutionalized
You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes
You won't have any say
They'll brainwash you until you see their way.

I'm not crazy - institutionalized
You're the one who's crazy - institutionalized
You're driving me crazy - institutionalized

They stuck me in an institution
Said it was the only solution
to give me the needed professional help
to protect me from the enemy, myself

I was in my room and I was just like staring at the wall thinking about
everything but then again I was thinking about nothing
And then my mom came in and I didn't even know she was there she called my
name and I didn't even hear it, and then she started screaming MIKE! MIKE!
And I go:
What, what's the matter
And she goes:
What's the matter with you?
I go:
There's nothing-wrong mom.
And she goes:
Don't tell me that, you're on drugs!
And I go:
No mom I'm not on drugs I'm okay, I was just thinking you know, why don't
you get me a pepsi.
And she goes:
NO you're on drugs!
I go:
Mom I'm okay, I'm just thinking.
She goes:
No you're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't act that way!
I go:
Mom just give me a Pepsi please
All I want is a Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me
All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me.
Just a Pepsi.

They give you a white shirt with long sleeves
Tied around you're back, you're treated like thieves
Drug you up because they're lazy
It's too much work to help a crazy

I'm not crazy - institutionalized
You're the one who's crazy - institutionalized
You're driving me crazy - institutionalized

They stuck me in an institution
Said it was the only solution
To give me the needed professional help
To protect me from the enemy, myself

I was sitting in my room and my mom and my dad came in and they pulled up
achair and they sat down, they go:
Mike, we need to talk to you
And I go:
Okay what's the matter
They go:
Me and your mom have been noticing lately that you've been having a lot of
problems, you've been going off for no reason and we're afraid you're gonna
hurt somebody, we're afraid you're gonna hurt yourself.
So we decided that it would be in your interest if we put you somewhere
where you could get the help that you need.
And I go:
Wait, what do you mean, what are you talking about, we decided!? My best
interest?! How can you know what's my best interest is? How can you say what
my best interest is? What are you trying to say, I'm crazy? When I went to
your schools, I went to your churches, I went to your institutional learning
facilities?! So how can you say I'm crazy.

They say they're gonna fix my brain
Alleviate my suffering and my pain
But by the time they fix my head
Mentally I'll be dead

I'm not crazy - institutionalized
You're the one who's crazy - institutionalized
You're driving me crazy - institutionalized

They stuck me in an institution
Said it was the only solution
To give me the needed professional help
To protect me from the enemy, myself

What does it matter i'll probably get hit by a car anyway

The Replacements followed up their 1984 release Let It Be with Tim, an album full of straight on rockers. The band had grown to have a reputation of raucous, drunken behavior, and many wondered how long could they survive under such a frenetic
pace. Still, vocalist Paul Westerberg and the brothers Tommy and Bob Stinson held their own as they became the crown princes of the rising Minneapolis alternative scene.

Hold My Life

Well, well, well i, found it's [my life]
Down on all fives
Let me crawl
If i want, i could dye...my hair

Time for decisions to be made
Crack up in the sun, lose it in the shade

Razzle, dazzle, drazzle, drone, time for this one to come home
Razzle, dazzle, drazzle, die, time for this one to come alive
And hold my life until i'm ready to use it
Hold my life because i just might lose it
Because i just might lose it

Well, well, well, anyone could tell, pass it off, a lucky shot
Ooh, they do hate 'em, someday soon, face em
Time for decisions to be made
Crack up in the sun, lose it in the shade

Razzle, dazzle, drazzle, drone, time for this one to come home
Razzle, dazzle, drazzle, die, time for this one to come alive
And hold my life until i'm ready to use it
Hold my life because i just might lose it
Because i just might lose it

Just might, just might, just might
We might crack up in the sun, or we'll lose it in the shade

Razzle, dazzle, drazzle, drone, time for this one to come home
Razzle, dazzle, drazzle, die, time for this one to come alive
Hold my life until i'm ready to use it
Hold my life because i just might lose it

Bastards Of Young

God, what a mess, on the ladder of success
Where you take one step and miss the whole first rung
Dreams unfulfilled, graduate unskilled
It beats pickin' cotton and waitin' to be forgotten

We are the sons of no one, bastards of young
We are the sons of no one, bastards of young
The daughters and the sons

Clean your baby womb, trash that baby boom
Elvis in the ground, there'll ain't no beer tonight
Income tax deduction, what a hell of a function
It beats pickin' cotton and waitin' to be forgotten

We are the sons of no one, bastards of young
We are the sons of no one, bastards of young
The daughters and the sons

Unwillingness to claim us, ya got no word (war?) to name us

The ones who love us best are the ones we'll lay to rest
And visit their graves on holidays at best
The ones who love us least are the ones we'll die to please
If it's any consolation, i don't begin to understand them

We are the sons of no one, bastards of young
We are the sons of no one, bastards of young
The daughters and the sons

Young...take it, it's yours...

On the bus, o.k., don't say hi, then
Your tongue, your transfer,
Your hand, your answer

On the bus, everyone's lookin' forward
On the bus, i am lookin' forward
And everything ain't o.k.
I might die before monday
They're all watchin' us

Kiss me on the bus
Kiss me on the bus
If you knew how i felt now
You wouldn't act so adult now
Hurry, hurry, here comes my stop

On the bus, watch our reflection
On the bus, i can't stand no rejection
C'mon, let's make a scene
Oh, baby, don't be so mean
They're all watchin' us
Kiss me on the bus
Kiss me on the bus
If you knew how i felt now
You wouldn't act so adult now
Hurry, hurry, here comes my stop

If you knew how i felt now
You wouldn't act so adult now
They're all watchin' us
Kiss me on the bus
Kiss me on the bus
Kiss me on the bus
Kiss me on the bus

British pop singer Nik Kershaw had enough good looks to charm his way onto the charts with Human Racing which featured the song "Wouldn't It Be Good".

Wouldn't It Be Good

i got it bad
you don't know how bad i got it
you got it easy
you don't know when you got it good
it's getting harder
just keeping life and soul together
i'm sick of fighting
even though i know i should
the cold is biting
through each and every nerve and fibre
my broken spirit is frozen to the core
don't wanna be here no more

wouldn't it be good to be in your shoes
even if it was for just one day
and wouldn't it be good if we could wish ourselves away
wouldn't it be good to be on your side
the grass is always greener over there
wouldn't it be good if we cold live without a care

you must be joking
you don't know a thing about it
you've got no problem
I'd stay right there if it were you
i got it harder
you couldn't dream how hard it got it
stay out of my shoes
f you know what's good for you
the heat is stifling
burning me up from the inside
the sweat is coming through each and every pore
don't wanna be here no more

wouldn't it be good to be in your shoes
even if it was just for one day
and wouldn't it be good if we could wish ourselves away
wouldn't it be good to be on your side
the grass is always greener over there
and wouldn't it be good if we could live without a care

In 1985, X released another heapin' helpin' of their roots-style punk with Ain't Love Grand.

Burning House of Love

drive by my house late at night
you can see it from from the freeway.
no silhouette, but a light left on,
burning there for love.
smoke is rising from the fire,
coming out my back door.
i'm inside sound asleep, i see it on the floor.
burning there for love.
well, i can still remember a couple of years ago.
when the smoke and flame from my name,
there was a burning house of love.
that rusty nail outside our door,
is where i nailed our tears at rain.
i threw that horseshoe in the weeds,
and see what love could bring.
now you're inside your big diamond lies,
on either side of town.
i think i might take a ride,
and burn your love house down
like a burning house of love

The Golden Palominos were not a band so much as a musical project of drummer/producer/filmmaker Anton Fier. Their album Visions of Excess featured vocals by Michael Stipe of R.E.M., John Lydon of PiL and formerly the Sex Pistols and alternative musician Bill Laswell.

(Kind of) True

(Oh yes indeed)

Boo hoo...

You gave me a ring
You made me a promise
If this was a lie
You made it sound honest

But now that I have you
I'm lonlier now than ever
Now that I have you
It's better now than ever

He loves me
He loves me not
He loves me not
He loves me

Boo hoo...

I'm staring at the stars
I'm howling at the moon
Though you left me alone
For long in the gloom

But now that I have you
I'm lonlier now than ever
Now that I have you
It's better now than ever

You're too kind for your own good
You're too good for your own kind
You're too good for your own good
You're too good for your own kind

He loves me
He loves me not
He loves me not
He loves me

Boo hoo...

A woman of excess
With visions of success
Got lost in translations
with you in the day

And now that I have you
I'm lonlier now than ever
Now that I have you
It's better now than ever

You're too kind for your own good
You're too good for your own kind
You're too good for your own good
You're too good for your own kind

He loves me
He loves me not
He loves me not
He loves me

Every little thing I do
Every little thing I do is tragic

He loves me
He loves me not
He loves me not
He loves me

True...

You gave me a ring
You made me a promise
If this was a lie
You made it sound honest

Prefab Sprout was a British pop band fronted by Paddy Macaloon , who was a clever lyricist critics dubbed as a new Elvis Costello. Their 1985 British album, Steve McQueen, was renamed Two Wheels Good to prevent litigation from the late actor's estate. Can't be too clever for the Yanks.;)

Antiques !
Every other sentiments an antique
As obsolete as warships in the baltic
I'm driving on a straight road it never alters
And the radio serenades but doesn't falter

You offer infrared instead of sun
You offer paper spoons and bubble gum

Late sky
Like an all night radio station
Without morning
Like stumbling on pearl harbour
Without warning

You offer infrared instead of sun
You offer bubble gum

You give me faron young four in the morning
You give me faron young four in the morning
Every mother's son's romantic
Every mother's son's frantic !

The sunset makes a fence out of the forest
But here I am with head inside the bonnet
I've lost just what it takes to be honest

You offer infrared instead of sun
You offer bubble gum

Forgive me faron young four in the morning

Icicle Works were another British band fronted by lead vocalist Ian McNabb. Their 1985 album was
The Small Price for a Bicycle.

Seven Horses

Lo, the poor Indian
whose poor untutored mind
Clothes him in front,
but leaves him bare behind
Maybe in another year
the simple life we lead
Could become more comfortable,
or even change completely

Evangeline, your streets were washed away
You'll never vent your anger,
We'll await with baited breath
For something better than we have

Shallow dreams undone
Fruitless and unsung
No challenge towers so steep
Seven horses deep

A festival came to my town
and quickly went away
Faith contains the seed
of lowly tragedy they say.
One step forward, two steps back
The bango jangles in the subway
Some await with bated breath
For something better than they have

Shallow dreams undone
Fruitless and unsung
No challenge towers so steep
Seven horses deep

And of course, we've heard the song that made them a hit in America:

Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)

Some things take forever,
But with building bricks of trust and love,
Mountains can be moved

Love come, down upon us 'till you flow like water,
Burning, with the hope of insight,
Feathered, look they're covered with a bright elation,
Stolen, in the sight of love,

Chorus: We are, we are, we are but your children, finding our way
Around indecision, we are, we are, we are ever helpless,
Take us forever, a whisper to a scream

Birds Fly, in the eye of the faithless daughter,
Broken, at the bitter end,
Wasted, sacrifice for a new nirvana,
Night time, send us on our way

Repeat Chorus

A whisper to a scream

Repeat Chorus

So we're going back to 1984 for this one: How could we forget
Thomas Dolby's The Flat Earth with "Hyperactive"?

Hyperactive

(Tell me about your childhood.)
At the tender age of three
I was hooked to a machine
Just to keep my mouth from spouting junk.
Ha! Must have took me for a fool
When they chucked me out of school
'Cause the teacher knew I had the funk.
But tonight I'm on the edge -
Fellas, shut me in the fridge
'Cause I'm burning up! (I'm burning up.)
With the vision in my brain
And the music in my veins
And the dirty rhythm in my blood!

They are messing with my heart...
And they're messing with my heart
And they're messing with my heart
Won't stop messing with my... ohh!
Ripping me apart!

Hyperactive: when I'm small
Hyperactive: now I'm grown
Hyperactive: and the night is young
(And in a minute I'll blow!)

Semaphore out on the floor
Messages from outer space
Deep heat for the feet
And the rhythm of your heartbeat
'Cause the music of the street
It isn't any rapattack
It isn't any rapattack

I can reach into your homes
Like an itch in your headphones
You can't turn it up
I'm the shape in your back room
I'm the breather on the phone
And I'm burning up
But there's one thing I must say
Before they lock me up again -
You'd be safer at the back
When I'm having an attack!

Hyperactive: when I'm small
Hyperactive: now I'm tall
Hyperactive: as the day is long
Hyperactive: in my bones
Hyperactive: in your phones
Hyperactive: and the night is young
Hyperactive : when I'm small
Hyperactive: now I'm grown
Hyperactive: 'til I'm dead and gone

Stand up : hyperactivate!
Get up: hyperactivate!
Wise up: hyperactivate!
London: hyperactivate!

Oingo Boingo released the biggest album of their career, Dead Man's Party, which featured not only the excellent title track but a song that would becom the theme song to both a classic movie and t.v. series.

Dead Man's Party

I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go
Walkin' with a dead man over my shoulder

Waiting for an invitation to arrive
Goin' to a party where no one's still alive

Chorus
I was struck by lighting
Walkin' down the street
I was hit by something last night in my sleep
It's a dead man's party
Who could ask for more
Everybody's comin', leave your body at the door
Leave your body and soul at the door . . .
(don't run away it's only me)

All dressed up with nowhere to go
Walkin' with a dead man
Waitin' for an invitation to arrive
With a dead man . . . dead man . . .

Got my best suit and my tie
Shiny silver dollar on either eye
I hear the chauffeur comin' to the door
Says there's room for maybe just one more . . .

Chorus

Don't run away it's only me
Don't be afraid of what you can't see
Don't run away it's only me . . .

Talent and imagination

Not what teacher said to do
Makin' dreams come true
Living tissue, warm flesh

Bits and pieces (and)
Bits and pieces (and)

Chorus
(bits of) my creation--is it real?
It's my creation--i do not know
No hesitation--no heart of gold
Just flesh and blood--i do not know

From my heart and from my hand
Why don't people understand
My intentions . . . . oooh, weird . . . .

Magic and technology
Voodoo dolls and chants
Electricity
We're makin'

(weird science)
Fantasy and microchips
Shooting from the hip
Something different
We're makin'

Pictures from a magazine
Diagrams and charts
Mending broken hearts (and makin')

Bits and pieces . . . .

Berlin returned with Love Life which featured the hit "No More Words."

No More Words

You're talking it all sounds fair
You promise your love how much you care
I'm still listening and still unsure
Your actions are lacking, nothing is clear

CHORUS
No more words
You're telling me you love me while you're looking away
No more words, no more words
And no more promises of love

Remember when the words were new
They carried a meaning, a feeling so true
I'm looking for a long romance
Not a picture of passion or one time chance

CHORUS

Don't fool your self
Your empty passion won't satisfy me
I know, so don't pretend that you want me
You don't want me, no!

CHORUS

We make love, and it's all the same
Your eyes show nothing, no lover's flame
Don't promise we can work it out
You can leave right now if you're feeling doubt

CHORUS

No more words
You're telling me you love me you're looking away
No more words, no more words
And no more promises of love

(No more words and no more promises)
No more words and no more promises of love
(repeat to fade)

One band that rose to critical acclaim in 1985 was Lone Justice, fronted by lead singer Maria McKee. This countrified alt-rock band was of particular interest to Christians as McKee had counted herself as one (interesting how all the hipster Christians were more into learning about their own in Secular-La-La Land than churchy cheerleaders in their own sanitized Christian bookstores). The following lyrics were written by Tom Petty and Mike Campbell, and McKee's lovely voice fits it perfectly:

Ways to Be Wicked

Honey tell me why you smile
When you see me hurt so bad
Tell me what I did to you babe
That could make you act like that
Yes I've been your fool before babe
And I probably will again
She ain't afraid to let me have it
You ain't afraid to stick it in
Yeah you know so many ways to be wicked
But you don't know one little thing about love

Yeah I can take a little pain
I could hold it pretty well
I can watch your little eyes light up
When you're walkin' me through hell
Yes I've been your fool before, babe
And I probably will again
She ain't afraid to let me have it
You ain't afraid to stick it in

Yeah you know so many ways to be wicked
But you don't know one little thing about love

Yeah those cobra eyes
Light with a smile
You take pride
In that devil down inside

I can take a little pain
I can hold it pretty well
I can watch your little eyes light up
When you're walkin' me through hell
Yeah I've been your fool before babe
And I probably will again
No you ain't afraid to let me have it
Honey you ain't afraid to stick it in

You know so many ways to be wicked
But you don't know one little thing about love

You know so many ways to be wicked
But you don't know one little thing about love

One of the big success stories of 1985 was The Hooters, a Philadelphia band whose album Nervous Night featured straight up rockers which even featured mandolins and blown instruments known as hooters--not the other kind.;) :cow:
:cow: Their frontman, lead singer Eric Bazillian had a prior claim to fame with writing Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time."

And We Danced

She was a be-bop baby on a hard day's night
She was hangin' on Johnny, he was holdin' on tight
I could feel her coming from a mile away
There was no use talking, there was nothing to say
When the band began to play and play

And we danced like a wave on the ocean, romanced
We were liars in love and we danced
Swept away for a moment by chance
And we danced and danced danced

I met my be-bop baby at the Union Hall
She could dance all night and shake the paint off the walls
But when I saw her smile across a crowded room
Well I knew we'd have to leave the party soon
As the band began to play out of tune

And we danced like a wave on the ocean, romanced
We were liars in love and we danced
Swept away for a moment by chance
And we danced and danced danced

The endless beat, she's walkin' my way
Hear the music fade when she says
Are we getting too close, do we care to get closer
The room is spinning as she whispers my name
And we danced...

This became their biggest hit. The lyrics were very intriguing:

All You Zombies

Holy Moses met the Pharaoh
Yeah, he tried to set him straight
Looked him in the eye, "let my people go"

Holy Moses on the mountain
High above the golden calf
Went to get the Ten Commandments
He's just gonna break them in half

All you zombies hide your faces
All you people in the street
All you sittin' in high places
The pieces gonna fall on you

No one ever spoke to Noah
They all laughed at him instead
Working on his ark, working all by himself

Only Noah saw it coming
Forty days and forty nights
Took his sons and daughters with him
Yeah, they were the Israelites

All you zombies hide your faces
All you people in the street
All you sittin' in high places
The rain's gonna fall on you

Holy Father, what's the matter
Where have all your children gone
Sitting in the dark, living all by themselves
You don't have to hide anymore
All you zombies show your faces...

Time is all we have to play
Tell me you can't live without me
Tell me every day by day by day
Nothing lasts forever, only fades away
Day by day

Give me what you can tonight
I'm back tomorrow anyway
Show me some appreciation
Show me every day by day by day
The chance you gotta take's the price you gotta pay
Day by day

And if you break down, I will remind you
Of what you were yesterday
You can break down, I'll be behind you

Blue jean-she got a camouflaged face and no money

One day I’m gonna get that faculty together

Corey Hart, who gave us 1983's "Sunglasses at Night", returned with Never Surrender.

Never Surrender

Just a little more time is all we're asking for
Cause just a little more time could open closing doors
Just a little uncertainty can bring you down

And nobody wants to know you now
And nobody wants to show you how

So if you're lost and on your own
You can never surrender
And if your path won't lead you home
You can never surrender
And when the night is cold and dark
You can see, you can see light
Cause no one can take away your right
To fight and never surrender

With a little perseverance you can get things done
Without the blind adherence that has conquered some

And nobody wants to know you now
And nobody wants to show you how

So if you're lost and on your own
You can never surrender
And if your path won't lead you home
You can never surrender
And when the night is cold and dark
You can see, you can see light
Cause no one can take away your right

To never surrender

Watch you weave then breathe your story lines
And I wear my sunglasses at night
So I can so I can
Keep track of the visions in my eyes

While she's deceiving me
It cuts my security has
She got control of me

Don't switch the blade on the guy in shades oh no
Don't masquerade with the guy in shades oh no

And I wear my sunglasses at night

With nobody else
I drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
You know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself

Every morning just before breakfast
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and good buddy Wiser
That's all I ever need
'Cause I drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself

The other night I laid sleeping
And I woke from a terrible dream
So I caught up my pal Jack Daniel's
And his partner Jimmy Beam
And we drank alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself

The other day I got invited to a party
But I stayed home instead
Just me and my pal Johnny Walker
And his brothers Black and Red
And we drank alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself

My whole family done give up on me
And it makes me feel oh so bad
The only one who will hang out with me
Is my dear old granddad
And we drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself

And let's not forget Lonesome George's 1982 release, Bad to the Bone.

Bad To the Bone

On the day I was born, the nurses all gathered 'round
And they gazed in wide wonder, at the joy they had found
The head nurse spoke up, and she said leave this one alone
She could tell right away, that I was bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone

I broke a thousand hearts, before I met you
I'll break a thousand more baby, before I am through
I wanna be yours pretty baby, yours and yours alone
I'm here to tell ya honey, that I'm bad to the bone
Bad to the bone
B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-Bad
Bad to the bone

I make a rich woman beg, I'll make a good woman steal
I'll make an old woman blush, and make a young woman squeal
I wanna be yours pretty baby, yours and yours alone
I'm here to tell ya honey, that I'm bad to the bone
B-B-B-B-Bad
B-B-B-B-Bad

Many pondered the question for years if Mick would be singing "Satisfaction" by the time he was 42. It was amazing, after all he had been through in his life that he was still singing at all. But by 1985, relations between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards had broken down, over career direction, over whether or not to tour, and other personality conflicts. The songs that Mick wanted for the next Stones album in fact became his first solo album, She's the Boss, which was a fairly decent, but not excellent, affair. It was passable pop rock, but nothing up to the Stones' standards on albums past.

Just Another Night

Give me just another night, just another night with you
Give me just another kiss, just before the dawn breaks through
'Cause I'm homesick, feel a little down and blue
And I'm hurting, hurting baby just like you

I was lonely 'til I saw you at the station
And I never thought you'd keep our rendezvous
Baby it's true.

Give me just another night, just another night with you
Give me just another kiss, just before the dawn breaks through
'Cause I'm hungry, hungry for your loving baby
And I'm thirsty, thirsty for your loving baby

And a one-day pass to heaven is so hard to find
And a one-night pass ain't really what I had in mind
I need your sweet tenderness, I need your soft caress
I know the day is coming, don't take away your loving
Can't you see that I'm human?

Just because you've seen my face, just because you know my name
I'm a stranger in this town, can't I have my ups and downs?
Can't you see that I'm human?

I get hungry, get thirsty
I get moody, I need attention
I need your love
I need your love
I want your love

Give me just another night, just another night with you
'Cause I'm freezing in this hundred-dollar hotel room
Don't make me leave you. No, don't you be so cruel

Sammy Hagar released V.O.A., which featured the favorite hit for frustrated gridlock commuters (as well as a great road song), "I Can't Drive 55". But the biggest success for the Little Red Rocker came as a surprise to everyone when....

I Can't Drive 55

One foot on the brake and one on the gas, hey!
Well, there's too much traffic, I can't pass, no!
So I tried my best illegal move
Well, baby, black and white come and touched my groove again!
Gonna write me up a 125
Post my face wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55! Oh No!
Uh!
So I signed my name on number 24, hey!
Yeah the judge said, "Boy, just one more...
We're gonna throw your ass in the city joint"
Looked me in the eye, said, "You get my point?"
I said Yea!, Oh yea!
Write me up a 125
Post my face wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55!
Oh, yea!
I can't drive 55!
I can't drive 55!
I can't drive 55!
I can't drive 55!
Uh!

-solo-

When I drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer.
And I can't get get my care out of second gear.
What used to take two hours now takes all day. Huh!
It took me 16 hours to get to L.A.
Gonna write me up a 125
Post my face wanted dead or alive
Take my license, all that jive
I can't drive 55!
No, no no,
I can't drive...
(I can't drive 55!)
I can't drive...
(I can't drive 55!)
I can't drive 55!

The bigger news than David Lee Roth's ouster from Van Halen was of his replacement: Sammy Hagar!! Oddly enough, Van Halen even contemplated replacing Roth with female lead singer (and how would that have worked out?;) ), but their management had recommended a frontman who had a reputation of being as flamboyant and energetic as Diamond Dave. In the late 70's, Sammy was a hellcat on stage with his wild stage moves and boundless energy, and he seemed a perfect fit for Van Halen. In fact, in the late 70's, before Van Halen even released their first album, their management even suggested getting rid of troublesome and unprofessional Roth with Hagar (who had sang for Montrose in the early 70's--and was managed by Ted Templeman).

Eddy and the band found Sammy very much to their liking--he was professional, enthusiastic, and came up with endless jokes. They had endless good times with Hagar on board. But the real question remained--how would the FANS respond to the new lineup? When the news broke, many were sorely disappointed. It just was not Van Halen without David Lee Roth. Even Warner Brothers records even insisted they change their name since Dave was no longer in the band. Van Halen refused. It was going to be a new beginning for the band, with all the dirty air and Eddy's frustrations with Roth completely behind him.

Tom Waits released another masterpiece, Rain Dogs, which featured more of his poetic lyrics of the other side of society and his traditional jazzy, bluesy musical style.

Jockey Full of Bourbon

Edna million in a drop dead suit
Dutch pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain
Sixteen men on a dead man's chest
And i've been drinking from a broken cup
Two pairs of pants and a mohair vest
I'm full of bourbon, i can't stand up

Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone

Schiffer broke a bottle on morgan's head
And i'm stepping on the devil's tail
Across the stripes of a full moon's head
And through the bars of a cuban jail
Bloody fingers on a purple knife
Flamingo drinking from a cocktail glass
I'm on the lawn with someone else's wife
Admire the view from up on top of the mast

Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, your children are alone

I said hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
House is on fire, your children are alone

Yellow sheets on a hong kong bed
Stazybo horn and a slingerland ride
"to the carnival" is what she said
A hundred dollars makes it dark inside
Edna million in a drop dead suit
Dutch pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain

Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone

Rain Dogs

Inside a broken clock, splashing the wine with all the rain dogs
Taxi, we'd rather walk, huddle a doorway with the rain dogs
For i am a rain dog, too

Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away all of the lights
We've always been out of our minds

The rum pours strong and thin, beat out the dustman with the rain dogs
Aboard a shipwreck train, give my umbrella to the rain dogs
For i am a rain dog, too

Oh, how we danced with the rose of tralee
Her long hair black as a raven
Oh, how we danced and you whispered to me
You'll never be going back home
Oh, how we danced with the rose of tralee
Her long hair black as a raven
Oh, how we danced and you whispered to me
You'll never be going back home

Walking Spanish

He's got himself a homemade special
You know his glass is full of sand
And it feels just like a jaybird the way it fits into his hand
He rolled a blade up in his trick towel
They slap their hands against the wall
You never trip, you never stumble
He's walking spanish down the hall

Slip him a picture of our jesus
Or give him a spoon to dig a hole
What all he done ain't no one's business
But he'll need blankets for the cold
They dim the lights over on broadway
Even the king has bowed his head
And every face looks right up at mason
Man he's walking spanish down the hall

Litella's screeching for a blind pig
Punk sanders carved it out of wood
He never sang when he got hoodwinked
They tried it all but he never would
Tomorrow morning there'll be laundry
But he'll be somewhere else to hear the call
Don't say goodbye, he's just leaving early
He's walking spanish down the hall

All st. barthelemew said
Was whispered into the ear of blind jack dawes
All baker told the machine was that he never broke the law
Go on and tip your hat up to the pilate
Take off your watch, your rings and all
Even jesus wanted just a little more time
When he was walking spanish down the hall

One of Prince's female proteges, Sheila Escovedo, or Sheila E., the daughter of Latin drummer Pete "Coke" Escovedo, released her first solo album Glamorous Life, where she both sang and played drums very expertly. And she was also the biggest teaser in concert--she would tie men up to a chair and perform a bit of naughty escapades on them in front of the whole audience!  And not to mention her sheer stage wardrobe...

The Glamorous Life

She wears a long fur coat of mink
Even in the summer time
Everybody knows from the coy little wink
The girl's got a lot on her mind

She's got big thoughts, big dreams
And a big brown Mercedes sedan
What I think this girl,
She really wants is to be in love with a man

CHORUS
She wants to lead the Glamorous Life
She don't need a man's touch
She wants to lead the Glamorous Life
But without love it ain't much

She saw him standing in the section marked
If you have to ask you can't afford it lingerie
She threw him bread and said make me scream
In the dark what could he say

Boys with small talk and small minds
Really don't impress me in bed
She said I need a man's man baby
Diamonds and furs
Love would only conquer my head

repeat CHORUS

They made haste in the brown sedan
They drove to 55 Secret street
They made love and by the seventh wave
She knew she had a problem
She thought real love is real scary
Money only pays the rent
Love is forever that's all your life
Love is heaven sent it's glamorous

repeat CHORUS

Kim Mitchell, the frontman for eccentric Canadian rock band Max Webster (and close friends of Rush), released a solo album entitled Akimbo Logo, with the hit that fit in with the Reaganite feel-good times:

Go For a Soda

so we're in one of our blue moods
you wanna have it your way and I want it mine
all this debating going 'round in our blue mood
makes me thirst for love

Might as well go for a soda...Nobody hurts and nobody cries
Might as well go for a soda...Nobody drowns and nobody dies

life seems to be a bomb inside your head
well the bomb in my head is love
all this debating going 'round in our blue mood
makes me thirsty for love

Might as well go for a soda...Nobody hurts and nobody cries

During the P.M.R.C. Senate hearings, one band would have been left in the metal underground if it were not for Tipper Gore mentioning their names to young impressionable record buyers everywhere: The Mentors. The three hooded men with enormous beer bellies came out with totally depraved songs with such savory lyrics as "Sandwich of Love", "The Four F Club", and their salute to Tipper Gore's crew: "Heterosexuals Have the Right to Rock." The band featured such legendary members as Sicky Wifebeater and Il Duce who played it loud, hard, and ugly. A talented bunch they were. Their 1985 album was You Axed For It!!

1985 would have been an otherwise decent year for Ozzy if it weren't for an incident hanging over him from the year before. A young man by the name of John McCollum was found dead of a shotgun wound in his bedroom. His parents were hysterical when they found the Blizzard of Ozz album on the turntable with the song "Suicide Solution" on it. They assumed that Ozzy was responsible for the death of their son and decided to sue.

Ozzy explained that if he had songs encouraging his listeners to go out and kill themselves, he wouldn't have too many fans, now, would he? He was also puzzled how this young man could go unsupervised for so long only to have his parents find him dead. In the end, the judge ruled in favor of Ozzy: If songs and literature with themes of suicide were to be banned for their supposed effects on listeners, then even Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" and others would be removed from library shelves. Ozzy explained that the "suicide solution" in the song was about alcohol, a chemical solution--and that the song served as a warning against suicide.

But that was not all...

In December 1985, two young men from Reno, Nevada, Ray Belknap and James Vance, entered into a suicide pact and shot themselves in a playground. Belknap died instantly. Vance survived but would undergo months of reconstructive surgery after the gunshot horribly disfigured him. The reason why they shot themselves? They blamed...

Judas Priest's Stained Class album.

Was it the object that killed them? Two songs: "Better Than You, Better By Me" and "Beyond the Realms of Death" were claimed to be the inciting factors behind their horrible acts.

Was that the final word?

Bruce Springsteen released a box set Live 1975-1985 to commemorate his the year of his biggest success, to fill new fans in on what they might have missed in concert on his long climb to stardom. The album featured not only great live versions of his biggest hits and not-so-huge songs, but also stories and vignettes about growing up and his reflections of life and society around him. Unfortunately, as is the case of box sets, it was not the biggest seller. Box sets were not cheap to come by then.

Adam Raised a Cain

In the summer that i was baptized my father held me to his side
As they put me to the water he said how on that day i cried
We were prisoners of love a love in chains
He was standin' in the door i was standin' in the rain
With the same hot blood burning in our veins
Adam raised a cain

All of the old faces ask you why you're back
They fit you with position and the keys to your daddy's cadillac
In the darkness of your room your mother calls you by your true name
You remember the faces the places the names
You know it's never over it's relentless as the rain
Adam raised a cain

In the bible cain slew abel and east of eden he was cast
You're born into this life paying for the sins of somebody else's past
Daddy worked his whole life for nothing but the pain
Now he walks these empty rooms looking for something to blame
You inherit the sins you inherit the flames
Adam raised a cain

Lost but not forgotten from the dark heart of a dream
Adam raised a cain

El DeBarge went solo from his family R & B act The DeBarges to sing songs such as "Who's Johnny?" and "Rhythm of the Night".

And here he is singing with the greatest girl group of the 80's...

Sexy Lingerie!!!!

Who's Johnny?

There she goes and knows I'm dying when she says "Who is Johnny?"
Games with names that girl is playing, all she says is "Who is Johnny?"
I tried to understand because I'm people too
And playing games is part of human nature
My heart's in overdrive, it's great to be alive

"Who's Johnny?" she said and smiled in her special way
"Johnny," she said, "you know I love you"
"Who's Johnny" she said and tried to look the other way
Her eyes gave her away
Alright, oh yeah

She makes sure I see her teasing, hear her say "Who is Johnny?"
There's no way today is easy, hear her say "Who is Johnny?"
I really couldn't help but fall in love with her
Her being there has made my life worth living
I knew it from the start, that I would lose my heart

"Who's Johnny?" She said and smiled in her special way
"Johnny," she said, "you know I love you"
"Who's Johnny" she said and tried to look the other way
still pretending

"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
Wow-oooh, oh no
"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
Oh no-no-no-no, i don't believe it
"Who's Johnny?" she said and tried to look the other way
Her eyes gave her away

(Girls like her) Are very special girls
(Girls like her) Don't rest
'Till'Till you too are a believer
'Till you too have caught their fever

Who-who-who-..
"Who is Johnny?"
There she goes and knows I'm dying when she says
"Who is-who-who is" "Who's Johnny?" She said and smiled in her special way
"Johnny," she says, "you know I love you"
"Who's Johnny" she says and tried to look the other way
Her eyes gave her away

"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"

"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"

"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
That girl's pretending she can't remember my name
"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
Oh, i can't believe it

"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
I know this girl is only teasing
"Who's Johnny?"
she said, She walked at me with someone else
And left me standing there, ooo-oooh
"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"

"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
It isn't love...

"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
"Who's Johnny?"
Johnny come with me
"Who's Johnny?"

On December 22, 1985, a few days before Christmas, Minutemen guitarist d. Boon died in a crash on a highway in Arizona. D. Boon was unique in his role in punk guitar in that he incorporated styles such as jazz, funk and country in an otherwise simplistic genre. Though the band was no more, he did much to popularize not only the concept of punk and alternative as "people's music-- for the people", he also helped popularize what would become known as punk-funk, and though many later fans would know little of the man himself, they would hail the new take on cutting edge music in names that are familiar to many, as we shall see. He cared little for big-time corporate success, though his bandmate, bassist Mike Watt would be influential and find some success in the years to come in the burgeoning punk-funk movement.

On December 31, 1985, on New Years' Eve, Rick Nelson and fiancee Helen Blair were flying from a performance in Guntersville, Alabama, when their plane crashed, killing all on board. The cause of the crash was due to faulty wiring.

Rick Nelson was more than the musical son of one of t.v.'s biggest
musical families, he was a dedicated musician who helped found country rock in the 60's with his Stone Canyon band. At a concert in New York's Madison Square Garden in 1971, he took it hard at an oldies show when the crowd stared booing--he felt they did not like his newer musical direction, but in fact, the boos were due to the struggle between police and security with fans in the crowd. Nevertheless, Rick felt it was hard to leave the shadow of his so-called "teen idol" days.

But Rick carried on. He became a performer who lived for the road, and though it cost him a few relationships, it enriched his musical horizons. He was to be missed for years to come.

The one album that catipulted metal into the mainstream was Slippery When Wet by Bon Jovi. The band had it all, a drop-dead hunky lead singer with perfectly pouffed-and-teased looks, a driving sound that featured catchy commercial hooks, and songs that struck a chord with thousands of Bic-lighter-raising fans. Being from New Jersey, Bon Jovi's lyrics were compared to the Boss himself--in a decent pop-metal sort of way. They reflected the struggle to rise above situations, middle-class kids such as on their song "Livin' On a Prayer" who would overcome all obstacles with love.

The album was recorded in Vancouver, British Columbia, the stripper capitol of the world. The album cover art was going to reflect as much with a steamy, sweaty scantily-clad woman on the front, but the record company stepped in and said no. It was probably a good thing. The country was just a little too leery of controversy to deal with such a thing. This decision may have also guaranteed their success.

Livin' On a Prayer

Once upon a time
Not so long ago

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
He's down on his luck...it's tough, so tough
Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man, she brings home her pay
For love - for love

She says we've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love - we'll give it a shot

Chorus:
Whooah, we're half way there
WHOA Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
WHOA Livin' on a prayer

Tommy's got his six string in hock
Now he's holding in what he used
To make it talk - so tough, it's tough
Gina dreams of running away
When she cries in the night
Tommy whispers baby it's okay, someday

We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love - we'll give it a shot

Chorus

We've got to hold on ready or not
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got

Chorus

Most metal purists who had deified Iron Maiden and Judas Priest as metal would say no. Bon Jovi was just too pretty, too appealing to girls, too wimpy and corporate. Too teenybopper-ish. But Ritchie Sambora had the right sound from his Fender Stratocaster, a driving roar and perfect shredding technique and the guitar during his guitar solos, the big hair was mandatory--nothing spelled metal more than the poodle headed 'do's--and Bon Jovi had LOTS of it!! Their concerts were nothing short of godlike and awesome--flashpots exploding, special effects such as a wire which Jon Bon Jovi was suspended on which made him "fly" onstage, the sexy tight spandex which made girls stare lustfully at the armadillos the band shoplifted--the whole amazing spectacle that was loud, wild, colossal, larger than life, and anthemic. What could be more METAL than that??

You Give Love a Bad Name

Shot through the heart
And you're to blame
Darling you give love a bad name

An angel's smile is what you sell
You promise me heaven, then put me through hell
Chains of love got a hold on me
When passion's a prison, you can't break free

You're a loaded gun
There's nowhere to run
No one can save me
The damage is done

Chorus:
Shot through the heart
And you're to blame
You give love a bad name
I play my part and you play your game
You give love a bad name
You give love a bad name

Paint your smile on your lips
Blood red nails on your fingertips
A school boy's dream, you act so shy
Your very first kiss was your first kiss goodbye

You're a loaded gun
There's nowhere to run
No one can save me
The damage is done

Chorus
x3

bad name
you give love
you give love
bad name
you give love
you give love
bad name

Bon Jovi also made the power ballad popular with songs such as "Wanted Dead or Alive". As mentioned before with Dokken's "Alone Again", the power ballad was designed to please both girls with the band's "sensitive side" with acoustic guitars, as well as show off the guitarist's ability to do a fiery, powerful electric guitar solo to placate the rocker dudes in the crowd. Contrary to what many thought, it was NOT necessarily time to head for the concession stand for beer--you had to check out the guitar player's amazing chops!

The song also struck a chord with fans with the image of the band as gunslinging desperados living outside the law and living--and loving--on the run. Anyone who lived through the 80's remembers the popularity of the cowboy boots all the rocker dudes wore.

Wanted Dead or Alive

It’s all the same, only the names will change
Everyday it seems we’re wasting away
Another place where the faces are so cold
I’d drive all night just to get back home

Chorus:
I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I’m wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive

Sometimes I sleep, sometimes it’s not for days
And the people I meet always go their separate ways
Sometimes you tell the day
By the bottle that you drink
And times when you’re all alone all you do is think

Chorus

I walk these streets, a loaded six string on my back
I play for keeps, ’cause I might not make it back
I been everywhere, still I’m standing tall
I’ve seen a million faces an I’ve rocked them all

I’m a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride
I’m wanted dead or alive
I’m a cowboy, I got the night on my side
I’m wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive

Never Say Goodbye

As I sit in this smokey room
The night about to end
I pass my time with strangers
But this bottle's my only friend

Remember when we used to park
On Butler Street out in the dark
Remember when we lost the keys
And you lost more than that in my backseat, baby

Remember when we used to talk
About busting out - we'd break their hearts
Together - forever

Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
Holdin' on - we got to try
Holdin' on to never say goodbye

Remember days of skipping school
Racing cars and being cool
With a six pack and the radio
We didn't need no place to go

Remember at the prom that night
You and me we had a fight
But the band they played our favorite song
And I held you in my arms so strong

We danced so close
We danced so slow
And I swore I'd never let you go
Together - forever

Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end
Say goodbye, never say goodbye
Holdin' on - we got to try
Holdin' on to never say goodbye

I guess you'd say we used to talk
About busting out
We'd break their hearts
Together - forever

Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
You and me and my old friends
Hoping it would never end
Say goodbye, never say goodbye
Holdin' on - we got to try
Holdin' on to never say goodbye

There was no question that when Slippery When Wet broke, every single pop metal band on or off MTV followed Bon Jovi's lead in everything--from how to properly tease their hair, to have the right look--jeans or spandex? What was Jon Bon Jovi wearing this week? The right kind of songs, rockers, ballads, anthems slow, fast, in between? From stage sets all the way down to which kind of makeup was the band using. Bon Jovi had the proper combination between being prettified and pouffed to having that street-cred keepin'-it-real homeboy from New Joizzy sort of image. He was perfect for MTV. Many thought he should be a movie star.

Following Bon Jovi's lead would become the recipe for success for years.

Wild In the Streets

Joey comes from a sacred part of town
Where sometimes you talk so tough
That your feet don't touch the ground
And the sidewalk soldiers sing the midnite blues
While the old men recite their story lines
About when I was young like you
They say: Oh yeah
We were cruising to the backbeat
Oh yeah, Making love in the backseats
We were wild, wild in the streets

A member of the boy's brigade
Had a date with the girl next door
You know it made her daddy crazy
But it only made her want him more
They weren't looking for trouble
You know that boy didn't want a fight - not tonight
So she headed out thru her bathroom window
What her daddy didn't know was gonna be alright
They said: Oh yeah
We were cruising to the backbeat
Oh yeah, Making love in the backseats
We were wild, wild in the streets
Wild, wild in the streets
Wild, wild in the streets
Wild, wild in the streets

Sometimes this town ain't pretty
But you know it ain't so bad
Just like a girl who looks so happy
Whe inside she's so so sad
In here we got this code of honor
Nobody's going down
You don't walk in vain
Trough the kid's parade
'Cause this is my hometown

I'd Die For You

If you could see inside my heart
Then you 'd understand
I'd never mean to hurt you
Baby I'm not that kind of man

I might not say I'm sorry
Yeah, I might talk rough sometimes
And I might forget the little things
Or keep you hanging on the line

In a world that don't know Romeo and Juliet
Boy meets girl and promises we can't forget
We are cast from Eden's gate with no regrets
Into the fire we cry

Chorus:
I'd die for you
I'd cry for you
I'd do anything
I'd lie for you
You know it's true
Baby I'd die for you
I'd die for you
I'd cry for you
If it came right down to me and you
You know it's true, Baby I'd die for you

I might not be a savior
And I'll never be a king
I might not send you roses
Or buy you diamond rings

But if I could see inside you
Maybe I'd know just who we are
'Cause our love is like a hunger
Without it we would starve

In a world that don't know Romeo and Juliet
Boy meets girl and promises we can't forget
We are cast from Eden's gate with no regrets
Into the fire we cry

Chorus

1986 was a MUCH better year than 1985... tho not as good as 84 or 87

Some great albums from that year....
Madonna - True Blue
Cyndi Lauper - True Colors
Janet - Control
Anita Baker - Rapture
Prince And The Revolution - Parade
Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet

Btw, Jon Bon Jovi's real name, in Italian, is Jon Bongiovi. Many people thought his name was originally the name of an Italian sports car, as was "Fantasy" and "Dirty Monkey" singer Aldo Nova. Or they thought Bongiovi was the name of a pasta sauce.

Let It Rock

The weekend comes to this town
Seven days too soon
For the ones who have to make up
What we break up of their rules

Well I saw Captain Kidd on Sunset
Tell his boys they're in command
While Chino danced a tango
With a broomstick in his hand
He said: It's alright (alright) if you have a good time
It's alright (alright) if you want to cross that line
To break on through to the other side

Chorus:
Let it rock, let it go
You can't stop a fire burning out of control
Let it rock, let it go
With the night you're on the loose
You got to let it rock

We go down to the Broadway
Where everybody goes
To get on their rockin' horse
And blast that radio
Well I saw Roxie on the table
Her girlfriend down below
They'll give it to the king of swing
Before it's time to go

They said: It's alright (alright) if you have a good time
It's alright (alright) if you want to cross that line
To break on through to the other side

You - you got a nasty reputation
We're in a sticky situation - it's down to me and you
So tell me - is it true ... they say there ain't nobody better
Well now that we're together
Show me what you can do

You're under the gun
Out on the run
Gonna set the night on fire
You're out on the run
Under the gun
And playin' to win

Chorus:
Raise your hands
When you want to let it go
Raise your hands
When you want to let a feeling show
Raise your hands
>From New York to Chicago
Raise your hands
>From New Jersey to Tokyo
Raise your hands

I - I've been out on the front line
Where you'll go down if you waste time
They'll walk all over you
But I - I ain't here looking for surrender
I'll raise the flag if you'll defend her
It's up to you

You're under the gun
Out on the run
Gonna set the night on fire
You're out on the run
Under the gun
And playin' to win

Social Disease

You can read it in the papers
In some places it comes in thirty-two flavors
But you wouldn't tell no one
Your favorite if you could

>From the White House to the alleys
>From the President down to Long Tall Sally
Can't live with it but
You'll die without it - yes you would

Senorita's in the kitchen
She's a fistful of dynamite
You call 911 but you
Can't stop the fun tonite, it's alright

Chorus:
You can't start a fire without a spark
But there's something that I guarantee
You can't hide when infection starts
Because love is a social disease

Where you look you can find it
Try to run but you're always behind it
So you play hide and seek like a blind kid
Till you're caught - yeah you're caught

So you'll say that you had some
But they took it and held it for ransom
Were they tall, dark, skinny or
Handsome - you won't talk

So you telephone your doctor
Just to see what pill to take
You know there's no prescription
Gonna wipe this one away

Chorus

So full of high grade octane
She could run the bullet train on 38 double d's
Now you know for sure, you know the cure
To make a blind man see

One band that definitely followed in the steps to success in the wake of Bon Jovi was another East Coast band Cinderella. It was ironic to have a "pretty" name for a bunch of guys playing heavy metal--and again, the metal purists would deny calling them that--but it was that sort of irony in their name that would bring them attention. It was a name like KISS, you wouldn't think they were heavy and rockin' when in fact with a name like that they would surprise you. Many 80's band weren't going for the obvious.

Fronted by Tom Kiefer on guitar and vocals, Jeff Labar on guitar, Eric Brittingham on bass and Fred Coury on drums, the band made a full on rocking debut on Night Songs. And speaking of KISS, Gene Simmons heavily promoted them, realizing they were a band to watch for. Tom Kiefer had the best shriek of any vocalist this side of Brian Johnson.

Night Songs

Workin' this job ain't payin' the bills
Sick and tired rat race takin' my thrills
Kickin' down a road, not a dollar in my pocket
Nightime falls and I'm ready to rock it

I need a shot of gasoline
I hittin' one sixteen
I get so hot I see steam
Forget the day, cause we're gonna scream

Night Songs
Howl into the light, singin'
Night Songs
Makes the day right
Night Songs
Raise your glass, take a bite
Night Songs

Ridin' to the east and ridin' to the west
Sleepin' all day, but never get a rest
Lookin' at the time stand still it ain't right
Livin' for the moment, time to get it tight
I need a shot of gasoline
I hittin' one sixteen
I get so hot I see steam
Forget the day, cause we're gonna scream

Night Songs
Howl into the light, singin'
Night Songs
Makes the day right
Night Songs
Raise your glass, take a bite
Night Songs
Ohh, sing it

And now, one of the greatest rock songs of all time......We all remember the video to this one with the two Wicked Stepsisters:

Oh, so sad!! We're going to the Cinderella concert--and you're not going!!

Shake Me

Alright, yea
I met this girl around quarter to ten
We made it once, she said "Make me again."
She wrapped her love around me all night long
In the mornin' we were still goin' strong

Now let me tell ya, it sure feels good
First time I saw that girl I knew it would
Now let me tell ya, it sure felt right
No pullin' teeth, she didn't want to fight, she said

Shake me, all night, she said
Shake me, shake it, don't break it baby
Shake me, all night, she said
All night long
All night long baby

Screamed and scratched and rolled out of the bed
I never really got her out of my head
And now and then she makes those social calls
Gives me a squeeze, gets me kickin' the walls

Now let me tell ya, it still feels tight
And we were shakin' after every bite
I feel her comin' in the middle of the night
Screamin' higher

Shake me, all night, she said
Shake me, shake it, don't break it baby
Shake me, all night, she said
Shake me, ooo yea

All night, keep the fire burnin', cause we're doin' all right
All night, come on and shake it right

Shake me
Shake me
Shake me
Shake me

Shake me all night, she said
Shake me, shake it, don't break it baby
Shake me, all night, she said
Shake me, ooo yea

Shake me
Shake me, yea
Shake me
Ooo come on baby baby
Shake me
Shake me

The other greatest song of all time. And you could again see the chicks in the video, prancing through the studio on their way to meet the boys in the band. Producer Andy Johns makes a cameo appearance.

And everyone knows what happens in the end of the video?;)

Somebody Save Me

When I was a young boy
They said you're only gettin' older
But how was I to know then
That they'd be cryin' on my shoulder
Put your money in a big house
Get yourself a pretty wife
She'll collect your life insurance
When she connects you with a knife

Somebody get the doctor
I'm feelin' pretty poor
Somebody get the stretcher
Before I hit the floor

Somebody save me
I lost my job, they kicked me out of my tree
Somebody save me
Save me

Everybody's got opinions
But nobody's got the answers
And that s:censored: you ate for breakfast
Well it'll only give you cancer
We're runnin' in a circle
Runnin' to the morning light
And if ya ain't quite workable
It's been one hell of a night

Somebody get the doctor
I think I'm gonna crash
Never paid the bill
Because I ain't got the cash

Somebody save me
I lost my job, they kicked me out of my tree
Somebody save me
Save me
Look out

Save me
I lost my job, they kicked me out of my tree
Somebody save me, oh
Save me

Somebody save me
I'm goin' down for the last time, look out
Save me
Sa-a-a-a-a-a-ave me
Save me

And here is the greatest power ballad of all time--and the video was amazing, and powerful:

Nobody's Fool

I count the falling tears
They fall before my eyes
Seems like a thousand years
Since we broke the ties
I call you on the phone
But never get a rise
So sit there all alone
It's time you realize

I'm not your fool
Nobody's fool
Nobody's fool
I'm no fool
Nobody's fool
Nobody's fool
Never again, no, no

You take your road, I'll take mine
The paths have both been beat
Searchin' for a change of pace
Love needs to be sweetened
I scream my heart out, just to make a dime
And with that dime I bought your love
But now I've changed my mind

I'm not your fool
Nobody's fool
Nobody's fool
I'm no fool
Nobody's fool
Nobody's fool
Never again, no, no
Nobody's fool
Nobody's fool
I'm no fool
Nobody's fool
Nobody's fool

I count the falling tears
They fall before my eyes
Seems like a thousand years
Since we broke the ties
Ohhh

I'm not your fool

Nothing For Nothing

When you see your face in the mirror
Does it seem the end is gettin' nearer
All your life you spent as a wheeler
Now the hole you dug, it gettin' deeper

You're talkin' words
But they don't make the rhyme
You'll lose it all
Cause you can't draw the line

You got nothin'
Nothin' for nothin'
You're hurtin' overtime
Nothin' for nothin'
And we don't need your kind
Nothin' for nothin'
Pushin', shovin', got no time
Nothin' for nothin'

When you see the day gettin' darker
You can run to yuor lies, run to your cover
When you feel the heat from a lover
You hit the highway lookin' for another

You made the grade
You left the hills behind
You take the the cake and eat it
You're so blind

You got nothin'
Nothin' for nothin'
You're hurtin' overtime
Nothin' for nothin'
And we don't need your kind
Nothin' for nothin'
Pushin', shovin', got no time
Nothin' for nothin', hey

Nothin' for nothin'
You're hurtin' overtime
Nothin' for nothin'
And we don't need your kind
Nothin' for nothin'
Pushin', shovin', got no time

And of all the "hair" bands that sprang onto the scene, no band ever upped the dose of mousse, Aqua-Net, or Max Factor quite the way that Poison did. Lead vocalist Bret Michaels originally came from the East Coast, from Philadelphia, and trucked all the way to the opposite end of the coast to L.A. Why? "It was farther to come back home," he said. In his attempt to go past the Point of No Return, he says that he pulled the rear view mirror off his car in a statement saying, there's no looking back. Many bands and band hopefuls, like Poison and Cinderella migrated west to Tinseltown to escape the boredom and drudgery of their lives back home. Like a modern day Tom Joad, many a musical nomad found the possibility of life in L.A. as exciting as they began a climb for the top--or at least have a ball trying. The chicks were plentiful, and just saying you were in a band was a way to score with potential babes.

C.C. DeVille was a flamboyant guitarist who was diagnosed with ADHD, and though he was a great player, many metal purists considered him and the rest of the band to be a bunch of prettified flakes who were more into IMAGE than actually
playing, due to the glaring effeminate apparel of the band. What was with the glammy get-up? Simple: the band wanted to look like stars--even if they were sleeping on the streets knee-deep in poverty. The way to achieve that was by looking as outrageous as possible--and to look like successful rock stars. It was a ploy that eventually paid off. The band, which included Rikki Rocket on drums and Bobby Doll on bass--who was also the band's hairdresser--would plaster ads and fliers
up and down Sunset Strip, line up shows and attract label interest. The band enjoyed the free meals that record execs would treat them to--there was no way these boys would starve even though they were broke. But when the record companies actually listened to them, they learned they could not play very well together. But C.C.'s motto was, "If you can't do something right, do it anyway." Eventually, they took time to pull some songs together which would form their first album, Look What the Cat Dragged In.

And we all remember when we saw that first album and said, "Man, those chicks are HOT!!" :eyes:

This would become their first hit:

Talk Dirty to Me

You know I never
I never seen you look so good
You never act the way you should
But I like it
And I know you like it too
The way that I want you
I gotta have you
Oh yes, I do

You know I never
I never ever stay out late
You know that I can hardly wait
Just to see you
And I know you cannot wait
Wait to see me too
I gotta touch you

Chorus:
Cause baby we'll be
At the drive-in
In the old man's Ford
behind the bushes
till I'm screamin' for more
Down the basement
lock the cellar door
And baby
Talk dirty to me

You know I call you
I call you on the telephone
I'm only hoping that you're home
So I can hear you
When you say those words to me
And whisper so softly
I gotta hear you

Chorus

C.C. pick up that guitar and talk to me

Solo, Chorus out

Meanwhile, as the metal minions were talking dirty about the cheesy dayglo glammed out looks of Poison and the wimpy-wampy-ness of C.C. DeVille's guitar playing, :soapbox: :cuss: the band was making a killing from their songs--and as an added bonus, metal was getting something that it was severely lacking for years--WOMEN!! It was perhaps a good thing Poison looked like women with the makeup, hair and scarves. It was something women could finally relate to!

But were they guys in the band "gay"? And who could take these
goofballs seriously? K.J. Doughton, head of Metallica's fan club, accused many bands such as Poison and Ratt of "diluting" rock's inherent sense of danger with the glammy, femmed-out look of the L.A. Sunset Strip bands. On the contrary, there was nothing more dangerous in metal than the glam look. It made sense: during the 80's, many young men were forced by their parents, peers and preachers to fit a certain image of what it meant to be "men." But as is the tendency to rebel among male teens, what could be more rebellious than to defy traditional concepts of "masculinity"--be a football player, have muscles, real men don't each quiche, real men don't cry, men hide their emotions and don't do sissy-stuff. They wrestle alligators and join the Marines and kill commies like Rambo. But when guys picked up on the image of Poison, what better way to piss off dear old dad--wear hair big and furry, put on that lipstick, and try a little pink in that outfit!! So there, dad!! One successful thing about glam metal is what one feminist writer wrote as "the problematization of gender."

In other words, it just plain rocked and chicks dug it.

I Want Action

I want action tonight
Satisfaction all night

I grab my hat and I
grab my shoes
Tonight I'm gonna hit
the streets and cruise

Down the main strip and
check it out
With those schoolgirls
a hangin' around

Now I'm a sucker for a pretty face
I don't care if she's in leather or lace
cause I'm just lookin' for a little kiss

Chorus:
I want action tonight
satisfaction all night
You've got the love I need tonight

Long legs and short skirts
These girls hit me where it hurts

I can't wait to get my hands on them
I won't give up until they give in

Now I'm not lookin' for a love that lasts
I need a shot and I need it fast
If I can't have her, I'll take her and make her

Chorus, solo

Hey, sweetheart, slide on in here
No, not in the front, jump in the back
Why?
Cause there's something back there I want to show ya
I want action tonight
Satisfaction all night
Ah, come on honey, I wasn't that bad!
Oh, well

It may be interesting to know that C.C. DeVille even was a member of Roxx Regime, the band that eventually became Stryper. Both Poison and Stryper started on the same independent label Enigma.

Cry Tough

Remember the nights we sat
and talked about all our dreams
Well little did we know then
they were more distant than they seemed
Well I knew it
you knew it too
The things we'd go through
We knew the things we had to do
to make it, baby.

Chorus:
You gotta cry tough
Out on the streets
To make your dreams happen
You gotta cry out
Out to the world
To make them all come true.

Life ain't no easy ride
At least that's what I am told
Sometimes the rainbow baby
is better than the pot of gold
You've got to stick it out
whether you're wrong or right
And you can't give in without a fight
to make it baby

Chorus

You gotta aim high, baby
whether you lose or win
And when you get to the top
You gotta get off or go right back down again

solo, chorus out

In spite of many people's misgivings, Look What the Cat Dragged In became so successful that the band started their Dragging the Cat Across America Tour. The band wanted to be stars, and were well on their way.

Want Some Need Some

All my friends have someone
I need someone too
Someone to hold the whole night through

I need a lover
someone like you
Someone to make my dreams come true

Maybe if I close my eyes
Everything will be alright
Cause I don't wanna be alone
No more, baby

Chorus:
I want some
I need some
anybody, somebody
Someone custom built for me
I want some
I need some
Whole lotta lovin' satisfaction guaranteed

I wake in the morning
And wrap my arms around no one
But that no one could be someone meant for me

So I jump out of my bed
And throw my hands on my head
And scream I need a lover just for me

Maybe if I close my eyes
Everything will be alright
Cause I don't wanna be alone
I know that baby

Chorus, solo, chorus out

Ratt released Dancing Undercover, which was a rushed recording that attempted to be a basic solid album, but suffered in the process. Guitarist Warren DeMartini was more of the 70's attitude that albums must be more than a collection of hit singles, but unfortunately, the record company and MTV had other ideas. At the end of the recording, producer Beau Hill said, "You know what? We have recorded a complete piece of s:censored:. There is not one hit song on the album." The band then quickly recorded "Dance" with became the standout single, but the album managed to only crack the Top 30. MTV played "Dance" and "Slip of the Lip" regularly, but the overall feeling was that nothing could match the roaring success of "Out of the Cellar."

One of the problems plaguing Ratt (no pun intended!!;) ) was that where it would take years for bands to develop their songs, sound and image, once they got popular, they were pressured to create the next sizzling slab of wax in a matter of months. Such was the case with Ratt and other L.A. metal bands who hit it big in the first wave in the early 80's. Another problem for the band was that vocalist Stephen Pearcy not only arrogantly compared themselves to the Stones and Zeppelin--they were gonna be HUGE!! he insisted, their music was just that great--but they had blown off their identity as metal band and emphasized fashion-over-thrashin'. Pearcy also posed for Playgirl, and the man with the big ego declined to reveal the size of his other assets. The band did not go for the leather and chains bit as before--"we don't want to scare anybody", said Pearcy. Though the album did make it to platinum, it was felt by all that they had a long way to go to match past glory.

Dance

Dance
Dance
Dance
Dance, dance, dance

Slip and slide, take a ride
You want the best of both worlds
Caviar, it's hard to find
You're not a big city girl

You have dreams to make it big
Right off the Greyhound bus
Roses come from everyone
You're gonna have yourself some fun

When it's all done
You bite your tongue
You're feelin' so young
No cover-ups
You're never alone
If you hear the call
It's all for one
And one for all

Baby we can dance, dance, dance
Feel the heat of the rhythm
Feel the heat of my hand
Dance, dance, dance
I see the way that you're movin'
You need a little romance

You have pride, just try and fight
You'll take on anyone
Stupid pans and fans, no more laughs
It's only ten to one

It's gettin' late to worry 'bout a date
Still you have no one
Twist of fate, you know it's too late
You turn on everyone

When it's all done
You bite your tongue
You're feelin' so young
No cover-ups
You're never alone
If you hear the call
It's all for one
And one for all

Baby we can dance, dance, dance
Feel the heat of the rhythm
Feel the heat of my hand
Dance, dance, dance
I see the way that you're movin'
I think we have a chance

When it's all done
You bite your tongue
You're feelin' so young
No cover-ups
You're never alone
If you hear the call
It's all for one
And one for all

Dance
Dance
Dance
D-d-d-dance

Dance, dance, dance
Feel the heat of the rhythm
Feel the heat of my hand
Dance, dance, dance
I see the way that you're movin'
You need a little romance

Dance, dance, dance
Feel the heat of the rhythm
Feel the beat of the band
Dance, dance, dance
I see the way that you're movin'
I think we have a chance, chance

Dance, dance

We'll dance, dance, dance

The video for this song was pretty hot with girls licking their lips. :liplick:

Slip of the Lip

I could take you wanted someone to call your own
Sweet sixteen, you couldn't see straight
You couldn't let go
Now you're eighteen and you barely make a sound
You're getting older, a little bolder
You're in the lost and found

All the way you say you'll take me
Any day you'll never break me

Slip slip
Slip of the lip
I like the way you move your hips
Loose lips
Sink ships
The way you move, you don't miss

I said I told ya, I'll get to know ya
We're goin' all the way
Move over, I'm gonna hold ya
To everything you say

And now I've showed you baby everything's okay
When I hold ya and when I show ya
You're gonna want to stay

All the way you say you'll take me
Any day you'll never break me

Slip slip
Slip of the lip
I like the way you move your hips
Loose lips
Sink ships
The way you move, you don't miss

Slip slip
Slip of the lip
I like the way you move your hips
Loose lips
Sink ships
The way you move, you don't miss

Slip

All the way you say you'll take me
Any day, well, nothing to say
You're so bad, your reputation
You know it's all the same
It's just a game

Slip slip
Slip of the lip
I like the way you move your hips

Loose lips
Sink ships
The way you move, you don't miss

Slip slip
Slip of the lip
I like the way you move your hips

Loose lips
Sink ships
The way you move, you don't miss

Slip slip

One L.A. band incorporated much blues into their metal style, Great White, who released Shot in the Dark in 1986. Their lead singer Jack Russell had a high howl, and guitarist Mark Kendall distanced himself from the shred tag with his bluesy guitar style.

She Shakes Me

Look in my eyes, my pupils are shot
I'm runnin' fever
Taken to drink and whatever you've got
I can't believe it

Masquerade ace in Hollywood hair
You've got my brains fried
Watchin' you move, having you near
I just can't breath right

But, Oh! Why should we have a reason?
Why hide it! Can't fight it
No longer got control

She shakes me
She shakes me

Built to ride, a cruiser that glides
She's just a woman
The look in her eye, the sound of a sigh
She loves a warm gun

She's mine and she really gets me off
So fine and she really gets me off

She shakes me

The band also recorded a cover of Angel City's "Face the Day."

Face the Day

I don't want to face the day the day, today

Long nights leave me stranded
Black visions, danger signs
No love- I need protection
Feels like I'm on a production line
Daggers of dawn, cold hearted day
Why does if have to be morning?
Cover my head, stayin' in bed
Too late the luckless warning

Outside the screaming city
Red lights, hungry eyes
Sucks like a space invader
The vacuum of its lies
Stealin' my strength, stealin' my time
It's raining in a world of traders

Let me keep on sleeping
Forget that I'm alone
One day of faceless living-
is twenty-four hours too long
I don't want to face the day

Give me the night, it's more forgiving
Hold back the light from my eyes
Please stay invisible darkness
can't see the tears that I cry
I know it's comin', loaded with nothing
Trapped in a tunnel of time

I don't want to face the day
The day, today

Shot in the Dark

I have learned the golden words
"You watch your step"
That life is made for fools
and the devil takes the rest
I know my heart is like a fire-
It burns alone
I come from somewhere else
where grapes of rock are grown

Call me a shot in the dark
firing blind, firing wild
Just like a shot in the dark
You'll never see- no stopping me
I'm a shot in the dark

So I live in other days
I take my time
I make my way down streets
where no one sees the signs
Can I learn the simple truth
face the fact
No matter where I am
I can never go back
'Cos I'm a shot in the dark

I shoot out from the black
I never can go back
Forever changing tracks
I'm a shot in the dark

Great White also released both their self-titled debut and Stick It in 1984.

Stick It

The old man told me "Hey you! Make a choice.
You can the music and stop all the noise,
Or you can get out and find your own way!"
I told him "Stick it." My rock's here to stay.
No. No. I can't live without it
No. No. It just ain't the same
No. No. Ain't no doubt about it
So rock me again!

I wanna roll it and burn it all night
Me and my Chevy don't stop for no lights
Crankin' the metal, blastin' the plant
They wanna catch me, betcha they can't!

I'm out on the road, and I'm rockin'!

Stick it!

I'm out on the road, there's no stoppin'
I'm out on the road and I'm rockin'
I'm out on the road and I'm gone.

Ozzy released The Ultimate Sin, his highest charting album yet. The album featured hits such as "Shot in the Dark", "Lightning Strikes", and the title track. The album featured Ozzy at perhaps his most ghoulish on the cover. What was so great about the tour was not only seeing Ozzy at his peak, but an opening band that opened a lot of eyes--and ears...

Everyone remembers the video for this:

Shot in the Dark

Out on the street I'm stalking the night
I can hear my heavy breathing
Paid for the kill but it doesn't seem right
Something there I can't believe in

Voices are calling from inside my head
I can hear them I can hear them
Vanishing memories of things that were said
They can't try to hurt me now

But a shot in the dark one step away from you
A shot in the dark always creeping up on you

Taught by the powers that preach over me
I can hear their empty reason
I wouldn't listen I learnt how to fight
I opened up my mind to treason

But just like the wounded and when it's too late
They'll remember they'll surrender
Never a care for that people who hate
Underestimate me now

But a shot in the dark one step away from you
A shot in the dark not a thing that you can do
A shot in the dark always creeping up on you

But just like the wounded and when it's too late
They'll remember they'll surrender
Never a care for the people who hate
Underestimate me now

But a shot in the dark one step away from you
A shot in the dark not a thing that you can do
A shot in the dark always creeping up on you

The video to this song was hilarious, as it pictured Ozzy in a parody of "Dallas" as J.R. Ewing. The theme of the song was much more serious, the message was that the ultimate sin was that of the abuse of power and corruption. Those in power felt however, that the ultimate sin was Ozzy. They had much to learn...

The song was a perfect indictment of the greed-is-good mentality of the 80's.

The Ultimate Sin

Overkill enough is enough
There's nothing left of me to devour
You've had your fill I'm all I have left
What can stop your hunger for power
'Cos you took advantage of things that I said
Now the feeling is dead

And that's the ultimate sin
And that's the ultimate sin

Anyway I look at it now
The doors are closed and cannot be opened
Bury your anger and bury your dead
Or you'll be left with nothing and no one
There's no point in screaming 'cos you won't be heard
Now that tables have turned

It was the ultimate sin
It was the ultimate sin
It was the ultimate sin

I warned you then and I'm warning you now
If you mess with me you're playing with fire
Winds of change that are fanning the flames
Will carry you to your funeral pyre
It's pulling you down
It's your final descent
It's too late to repent

When it's the ultimate sin
When it's the ultimate sin
When it's the ultimate sin
When it's the ultimate sin

Lightning Strikes

Won't you listen 'cos I'm at it again
Lightning striking and on that you can depend
They say that lightning never strikes the same place twice
Gods of thunder sit and watch the event

You know I take no prisoners
My back's to the wall
You know I must be going
When destiny calls
Until I feel that thunder shattering my brain
I won't stop

Rockin' all night rockin' all night
Until the lightning strikes again
Rockin' all night rockin' all night
Until the lightning strikes again

Tell your mama that you're gonna be late
But not to worry we'll just be rockin' all night
The lightning strikes before you hear the thunder roar
We're becoming the children of the night

I'm not apologizing
I am what I am
There is no compromising
I don't give a damn
Until I feel the thunder boiling in my veins
I won't stop

Rockin' all night rockin' all night
Until the lightning strikes again
Rockin' all night rockin' all night
Until the lightning strikes again

Oh no I've lost control
Here we got it's only rock 'n' roll

The silver light is flashing
As all turns to gold
In my head voices screaming
And I'm being told
If you will only listen you will hear them too
I won't stop

Rockin' all night rockin' all night
Until the lightning strikes again
Rockin' all night rockin' all night
Until the lightning strikes again

Ozzy was not without social commentary during this time either. Were there not too many religious politicos and preachers who felt a little too itchy to press the Armageddon button in those days?

Thank God For the Bomb

Like moths to a flame
Is man never gonna change
Time's seen untold aggression
And infliction of pain
If that's the only thing that's stopping war

Then thank god for the bomb
Thank god for the bomb
Thank god for the bomb
Thank god for the bomb

Nuke ya nuke ya

War is just another game
Tailor made for the insane
But make a threat of their annihilation
And nobody wants to play
If that's the only thing that keeps the peace

Then thank god for the bomb
Thank god for the bomb
Thank god for the bomb
Thank god for the bomb

Nuke ya nuke ya

Today was tomorrow yesterday
It's funny how the time can slip away
The face of the doomsday clock
Has launched a thousand wars
As we near the final hour
Time is the only foe we have

When war is obsolete
I'll thank god for the war's defeat
But any talk about hell freezing over
Is all said with tongue in cheek
Until the day the war drums beat no more

Then thank god for the bomb
Thank god for the bomb
Thank god for the bomb
Thank god for the bomb

Nuke ya nuke ya

Speaking of bombs. . . Here's a tale of two guitar players named Steve.

In 1986, veteran art rock guitarists Steve Howe (formerly of Yes) and Steve Hackett (fomerly of Genesis) ignored the history of supergroups (they usually never are) and went ahead and formed one, GTR.

http://www.dprp.net/forgotten/gtr/gtr.jpg

No one cared, no one bought the album (put out in the U.S. by Arista, who had given us Barry Manilow and later gave us Milli Vanilli), and no DJ's bothered to play anything from it on the radio. With no reason to exist, GTR broke up after this one album. And the critics, by the way, were unanimous on GTR's only album; they thought it was TTL CRP!

Kiss tried to use the made-up/non-made-up images simultaneously in the eighties in the style of Twisted Sister to shake thnigs up. So, with their significant others, they reformed Psychic Tomato in a new dynamic. . .

PSYCHIC TOMATO '86!

http://www.festivalinthepark.org/images/photos/clowns2334.jpg

(Psychic Tomato '86, before a North Carolina concert, in a 1986 photo copyrighted in 2000.)

With new costumes and members, the group revived its 1973 schtick - siniging silly songs about eating sponge cake, playing sloppily for twenty-eight minutes, doing American Indian chants, hitting each other in the faces with cream pies (CREAM PIES!), and spitting grape juice. Plus they had a brand-new song, "YOU GOT TO SEE YO' FACE!"

It didn't work out. For one thing, they opened up for GTR.

P.S. Everything I just typed is false! I have no idea who these clowns are! :D

Here is the one song that made them popular (but just briefly). The song was fluffy pop, the guitar solo was okay, kind of pompous sounding like some tango or whatever, but nowhere near the previous standards of Howe and Hackett.

It just goes to show, never put two prog-rock guitarists in the same room.

When the Heart Rules the Mind

Mother protect me, protect me from myself
Lately I can't tell, who really are my friends
Burning the candle, the candle at both ends
Through crowds, across floors
Each night I just pretend

When the heart rules the mind
One look and love is blind
When you want the dream to last
Take a chance forget the past

Watching the actor, that takes the stage by storm
Stealing the limelight, while we're in the wings
Sometimes the hero, must play the underdog
But I don't feel the same
I must have everything

When the heart rules the mind
One look and love is blind
When you want the dream to last
Take a chance forget the past

Seasons will change
You must move on
Follow your dream

I have no idea about the single pictured here. It's probably sold somewhere in some bargain bin in Greenland...

In 1986, Iron Maiden were at the top of the metal mountain. They were selling out arenas everywhere, and their t-shirts were some of the most valued rock accessories among fans everywhere. The band released Somewhere In Time, which featured the hit "Wasted Years" and an opus about the great ancient Greek conqueror Alexander the Great. The band took a bit of a new musical direction, not wanting it to be a repeat of same old trod-on past glories. Bruce Dickinson felt the band was capable of making an album on par with Led Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti in terms of musical expansion and complexity, such as songs based on acoustic guitars. But, even though he was the "face" of Iron Maiden, he was not the voice--except onstage, he was only a replacement for a previous face and voice.
He would have to get his ideas past bassist Steve Harris' and producer Martin Birch's seal of approval, and that whole idea of new instrumentation and song ideas would not fly, he knew. The band did attempt something of sort of a concept album, with the theme of futuristic time travel, reflecting the success of movies such as "Terminator". The album also featured some new additions to their sound, such as guitar and bass synths (synthesizers are generally considered anathema to metal fans) but the sound did not hurt the overall effect of the album. It seemed though as if a band with such imaginative lyrics and ideas would be bolder in their musical presentations and expanding their musical vocabulary.

This was a great video:

Wasted Years

From the coast of gold, across the seven seas
I'm travellin' on, far and wide
But now it seems, I'm just a stranger to myself
And all the things I sometimes do, it isn't me but
someone else

I close my eyes, and think of home
Another city goes by in the night
Ain't it funny how it is, you never miss it 'til it's
gone away
And my heart is lying there and will be 'til my
dying day

[Chorus:]
So understand
Don't waste your time always searching for
those wasted years
Face up... make your stand
And realise you're living in the golden years

Too much time on my hands, I got you on my mind
Can't ease this pain, so easily
When you can't find the words to say it's hard to
make it through another day
And it makes me wanna cry and throw my
hands up to the sky

[Chorus:]

Caught Somewhere In Time

If you had the time to lose
An open mind and time to choose
Would you care to take a look
Or can you read me like a book

Time is always on my side
Time is always on my side

Can I tempt you come with me
Be Devil may care fulfill your dream
If I said I'd take you there
Would you go would you be scared

Time is always on my side
Time is always on my side

Don't be afraid you're safe with me
Safe as any soul can be... honestly
Just let yourself go

[Chorus:]
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time... oh oh
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time... oh oh

Like a wolf in sheep's clothing
You try to hide your deepest sins
Of all the things that you've done wrong
And I know where you belong

Time is always on my side
Time is always on my side

Make you an offer you can't refuse
You've only got your soul to lose...
Eternally... let yourself go!

[Chorus:]
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time... oh oh
Caught somewhere in time
Caught somewhere in time
Caught now in two minds!

Stranger In a Strange Land

Was many years ago that I left home and came this way
I was a young man, full of hope and dreams
But now it seems to me that all is lost and
nothing gained
Sometimes things ain't what they seem
No brave new world, no brave new world
No brave new world, no brave new world

Night and day I scan horizon, sea and sky
My spirit wanders endlessly
Until the day will dawn and friends from home
discover why
Hear me calling, rescue me
Set me free, set me free
Lost in this place, and leave no trace

[Chorus:]
Stranger in a strange land
Land of ice and snow
Trapped inside this prison
Lost and far from home

One hundred years have gone and men again
they came that way
To find the answer to the mystery
They found his body lying where it fell that day
Preserved in time for all to see
No brave new world, no brave new world
Lost in this place, to leave no trace

What became of the man that started
All are gone and their souls departed
Left me here in this place
So all alone

[Chorus:]

What became of the man that started
All are gone and their souls departed
Left me here in this place
So all alone

[Chorus:]

Alexander the Great

"My son ask for thyself another
Kingdom, for that which I leave
is too small for thee"
(King Philip of Macedonia - 339 B.C.)

Near to the east
In a part of ancient Greece
In an ancient land called Macedonia
Was born a son
To Philip of Macedon
The legend his name was Alexander

At the age of nineteen
He became the Macedon King
And he swore to free all of Asia Minor
By the Aegian Sea
In 334 B.C.
He utterly beat the armies of Persia

[Chorus:]
Alexander the Great
His name struck fear into hearts of men
Alexander the Great
Became a legend 'mongst mortal men

King Darius the third
Defeated fled Persia
The Scythians fell by the river Jaxartes
Then Egypt fell to the Macedon King as well
And he founded the city called Alexandria

By the Tigris river
He met King Darius again
And crushed him again in the battle of Arbela
Entering Babylon
And Susa, treasures he found
Took Persepolis the capital of Persia

[Chorus:]
Alexander the Great
His name struck fear into hearts of men
Alexander the Great
Became a God amongst mortal men

A Phrygian King had bound a chariot yoke
And Alexander cut the 'Gordian knot'
And legend said that who untied the knot
He would become the master of Asia

Helonism he spread far and wide
The Macedonian learned mind
Their culture was a western way of life
He paved the way for Christianity

Marching on, marching on
The battle weary marching side by side
Alexander's army line by line
They wouldn't follow him to India
Tired of the combat, pain and the glory

Alexander the Great
His name struck fear into hearts of men
Alexander the Great
He died of fever in Babylon

Heaven Can Wait

Can't understand what is happening to me
This isn't real this is only a dream
But I never have felt, no I never have felt this
way before
I'm looking down on my body below
I lie asleep in the midst of a dream
Is it now could it be the Angel of Death has come for me
I can't believe that really my time has come
I don't feel ready there's so much left undone
And it's my soul and I'm not gonna let it get away

[Chorus:]
Heaven can wait / Heaven can wait
Heaven can wait / Heaven can wait til another day

I have a lust for the Earth below
And Hell itself is my only foe
'Cause I've no fear of dying
I'll go when I'm good and ready
I snatch a glimpse of the lights eternal rays
I see a tunnel I stand amazed
At all of the people standing there in front of me
Into the paths of rightness I'll be led
Is this the place where the living join the dead
I wish I knew this was only just a nightmare

[Chorus:]

Take my hand I'll lead you to the promised land
Take my hand I'll give you immortality
Eternal youth I'll take you to the other side
To see the truth the path for you is decided

My body tingles I feel so strange
I feel so tired I feel so drained
And I'm wondering if I'll ever be the same again
Is this in limbo or Heaven or Hell
Maybe I'm going down there as well
I can't accept my soul will drift forever
I feel myself floating back down to Earth
So could this be the hour of my rebirth
Or have I died or will I wake from dreaming?

[Chorus:]

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

The tough of the track
With the wind
And the rain that's beating down on
Your back
Your heart's beating loud
And goes on getting louder
And goes on even more 'til the
Sound is ringing in your head
With every step you tread
And every breath you take
Determination
Makes you run never stop
Got to win got to run 'til you drop
Keep the pace hold the race
Your mind is getting clearer
You're over half way there
But the miles they never seem to end
As if you're in a dream
Not getting anywhere
It seems so futile

[Chorus]
Run on and on
Run on and on
The loneliness of the long distance runner

I've got to keep running the course
I've got to keep running and win at
All costs
I've got to keep going be strong
Must be so determined and push myself on

Run over stiles across fields
Turn to look at who's on your heels
Way ahead of the field
The line is getting nearer but do
You want the glory that goes
You reach the final stretch
Ideals are just a trace
You feel like throwing the race
It's all so futile

[Chorus:]

In a banner year for metal, it was ironic that Judas Priest would streamline their sound on 1986's Turbo album, which featured synthesizers and less of their usual crunch. Perhaps it was part of the trend of many longtime metal bands to update their sound to appeal to more commercial tastes. While Turbo was a good album, was it really a Judas Priest album? Many fans were disappointed with it. The title track seemed like the best energy sports drink commercial jingle ever made:

Turbo Lover

You won’t hear me, but you’ll feel me
Without warning, somethings dawning, listen.
Then within your senses,
You’ll know you’re defenseless
How your heart beats, when you run for cover
Your cant retreat I spy like no other.

Then we race together. we can ride forever
Wrapped in horsepower, driving into fury
Changing gear I pull you tighter to me

I’m your turbo lover
Tell me there’s no other
I’m your turbo lover
Better run for cover

We hold each other closer, as we shift to overdrive
And eveyrthing goes rushing by, with every nerve alive
We move so fast it seems as though we’ve taken to the sky
Love machines in harmony, we hear the engines cry.

I’m your turbo lover
Tell me there’s no other
I’m your turbo lover
Better run for cover

On and on we’re charging to the place so many seek
In perfect synchronicity of which so many speak
We feel so close to heaven in this roaring heavy load
And then in sheer abandonment, we shatter and explode.

I’m your turbo lover
Tell me there’s no other
I’m your turbo lover
Better run for cover

I’m your turbo lover
Tell me there’s no other
I’m your turbo lover
Better run for cover

Remember the great video for this song?

Locked In

I can't stand the way you move it
You drive me crazy with that walk
You get me so excited
I tremble and I shake
When you make the moves you make

You've got the key
The key to my heart
Go ahead and use it
Drag me in, slam the door
Then I'll be yours, for evermore

You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love
You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love

I can't take it when you touch me
Feels so good I could explode
You've got me in a frenzy
I tremble and I quake
When you shake the things you shake

You've got the key
The key to my heart
Go ahead and use it
Drag me in, slam the door
Then I'll be yours, for evermore

You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love
You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love
Locked in
Locked inside your love
You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love

You've got the key
The key to my heart
Go ahead and use it
Drag me in, slam the door
Then I'll be yours, for evermore

You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love
You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love
You've got me locked in, baby
Locked inside your love
You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love

You've got me locked in, baby
Locked inside your love
You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love
You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love
You've got me locked in
Locked inside your love

Of course Judas Priest incurred the wrath of the P.M.R.C. and religious groups as a decadent metal band out to corrupt the youth of America. One incident seemed to reinforce that fear among authority figures in 1986: during the tour for Turbo, at a concert stop at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington, fans had gotten so out of control that police cars were overturned. And if that were not enough, during the opening set by Dokken, a young fan was knifed to death during a dispute with another concert-goer. :( It seemed that concert violence reached an all-time high during these years, which made security ever vigilant to monitor unruly behavior.

In spite of this, Judas Priest recognized that there were more fans
out there that acted responsibly and sensibly--and their message to Tipper Gore was: We don't need no parental guidance here!!

Parental Guidance

You say I waste my life away
But I live it to the full
How would you know anyway
You're just mister dull
Why don't you get into the things we do today
You could lose twenty years right away
So we say

We don't need no
No no no
Parental guidance here
We don't need no
No no no
Parental guidance here

Every day you scream at me
To turn the music low
Well if you keep on screaming
You'll make me deaf you know.
You always chew me out, because I stay out late
Until your three-piece suit comes back in date
Get one thing straight

We don't need no
No no no
Parental guidance here
We don't need no
No no no
Parental guidance here

There's no communication
I'm tired of explanation
Is this message getting through
You went through the same thing too

Don't you remember what it's like to lose control
Put on my jacket for you get too old
Let's rock and roll

We don't need no
No no no
Parental guidance here
We don't need no
No no no
Parental guidance here
We don't need no
No no no
Parental guidance here
We don't need no
No no no
Parental guidance here

Oh no
One life
And I'm gonna live it up

Rock You All Around the World

In the cities of the world
You know every boy and girl
Goes crazy to the beat of rock n' roll
And as the volume is soaring
All the crowd is roaring
Let it roll

Well, we don't care in the least
Cause our metal is a feast
But there's always someone trying to put it down
So we crank the music louder
And our voices turn to power
With a wall of sound we'll blow 'em all away

Rock you all around the world
We're gonna rock
We're gonna roll
We're gonna shake you down
We're gonna lose control

No one can hold us down
Just look around and see
This generation's getting up and breakin' free

No one can hold us down
Just look around and see
This generation's getting up and breakin' free

Rock you all around the world
Rock you all around the world
We're gonna rock
We're gonna rock you
Rock you all around the world

Rock you all around the world
We're gonna rock
We're gonna rock you
Rock you all around the world
We're gonna rock rock rock you
Rock you all around the World
We're gonna rock
We're gonna rock you.
Rock you all around the world
We're gonna rock rock rock you
Rock you all around the world

Metal made another big splash at the movies in the fall of 1986 with 'Trick Or Treat', which featured some pretty big names in rock and roll, Ozzy Osbourne, Gene Simmons, and--

MARC PRICE--SKIPPY FROM FAMILY TIES!!!!

The music for the soundtrack was performed by Fastway, who, other than a few of their hits such as "Say What You Will", "Easy Livin'", and "Tell Me You Want Me" from a few years back, had this as their final claim to fame. It seemed logical that recording soundtrack music would shoot a band's popularity into the stratosphere, but this was not the case for Fastway. However, Ozzy had quite a memorable role: he played a straight-laced anti-rock preacher--but when you look at him, you can't help but think, it's Ozzy all the way!! Gene Simmons had a decent role as a radio dj--perfect for a rock star who was making his rounds big time in Hollywood. The story basically revolves around a dead rock star named Sammy Curr who is under a curse to arrive at midnight when one of his songs is played...backwards? He plans to wreak havoc on a high school prom (just like in "Carrie") when his band plays. Marc Price's character is that of a heavy metal fan who resurrects him from the dead.

Take control

Knock, knock, knockin'

It's a trick or treat

See my face true up in the skies
If ever we should meet

Maybe you'll see
Someone's put a spell on me

Rock and roll
Rockin' on a midnight
Steal your soul
Rock and roll
Rockin' on a midnight
Take control

So let's rock
Rock, rock
Rock, rock

Rock and roll
Rockin' on a midnight

Stryper's second full-length album, To Hell With the Devil,
was released in 1986, and made them one of the biggest success stories of the year. It seemed everyone was singing the praises of Stryper, whether or not one was religious, they could see the powerful positive impact the band was having on audiences. Their big moment came when they even headlined Madison Square Garden in New York.

James Hetfield even claimed influence from the album: he was so thoroughly disgusted with it that it made him want to strive harder to be a musician.

The first song starts out with The Abyss, an instrumental which segues into:

To Hell With the Devil

Speak of the devil
He's no friend of mine
To turn from him is what we have in mind

[Verse 2]
Just a liar and a thief
The word tells us so
We like to let him know
Where he can go

[Chorus]
To hell with the devil
To hell with the devil

[Verse 3]
When things are going wrong
You know who to blame
He will always live
Up to his name

[Verse 4]
He's never been the answer
There's a better way
We are here to rock you
And to say...

[Repeat Chorus]

The album cover for To Hell With the Devil may look rather lame, but only because the original cover caused a bit of controversy in Christian record stores and everywhere else. The original cover pictured angels casting Satan into hell, as described in the Book of Revelation. But some nervous Nellies were too easily confused
by this and other "satanic" metal album cover art.

This song became one of their bigger hits, but the poppiness of it was sure to give James Hetfield stomach cramps:

Calling On You

[Verse 1]
Inside of me there is a lonely place
Sometimes I just don't know it's there
But when I'm all alone
That's when I have to face...

[Bridge]
The part of me that needs someone
To be by my side that's when I call on...

[Chorus]
You, You make my life complete
You give me all I need
You help me through and through
I'm calling on you

[Verse 2]
I can't explain just what You do to me
My love grows stronger everyday
You give me love, You give me company
And when I have to face the rain
You bring sunshine into my life

[Repeat Chorus]
[Solo]
[Repeat Chorus]

Too often their song lyrics sounded more like bumper stickers than rock anthems. But the pop evangelism was the big deal in the mid-80's.

Bassist Tim Gaines left the band briefly and was replaced by Matt Hurich(seen here in the second from the right), but Tim eventually returned to the fold. Oddly, as a drummer and bassist are designed to play in tandem live (hence the term rhythm section), drummer Robert Sweet played more in tandem with the guitar of Oz Fox. This caused a few problems with Tim being able to play with them in concert--the drum and guitar monitors were in sync with each other than the drum and bass.

Free

[Verse 1]
Free to turn away - say goodbye
Free to walk away - and deny
The gift waiting for you
Whispers a still small voice
It's your choice - you're..

[Chorus]
Free - Free to do what you want to
Choose your own destiny
Free to do what you want to
Free to open up - and believe
Free to simply ask - and receive
There's no better time than now
You've got the right to choose
You can't lose - you're...

[Repeat Chorus]

ABlairican Pie

On the left is temporary bassist Matt Hurich, while on the right is Tim Gaines, who came back and re-did all the photos for the album. Think anyone would have noticed the difference?;) Well, for one thing, Matt's suit on Tim was too short.

Simpler than dirt lyrics again, but the music is not too bad:

Sing-Along Song

[Verse 1]
In a land of freedom
God has sent His grace
We're proud to live in such a place

[Verse 2]
With the right to sing
Song after song
This song's for you to sing along!

[Chorus]
Whoa-o-o-o Whoa ooo La, La
Whoa-o-o-o Whoa ooo La, La

[Verse 3]
Lift your voices higher
We want to hear you sing
Let's lift our voices to the King of King's

[Repeat Chorus]

All Of Me

Verse 1]
All my life searching for the one to share
The space within my heart
To stand right by my side

[Verse 2]
Then you came to me
Shining as the morning sun
You gave your love to me
And I knew you were the one

[Bridge]
The one to share my life
To make all the wrong so right
We will live as one for all eternity
You and I

[Chorus]
I'm giving you all of me
Cause you gave me all of you
I'll love you forever
For you my love's so strong
I'm giving you all of me
Cause you gave me all of you
We'll stand together
And our love will always carry on

By this time, the forces of righteousness and decency were out demanding blood: one of Stryper's role models, a man whom they admitted served as an inspiration for the band, Jimmy Swaggart, wrote repeatedly in articles that Stryper "trashed" the Bibles they tossed into the crowd. Eager for a sensational story, Brother Jimmy allegedly sent "reporters" to infiltrate a Stryper concert and dig up dirt on them. Of course, what he got is pretty much what he expected: the band were loose and licenscious, their spandex was too tight, scantily-clad girls were fawning over the band, blasphemies were uttered, the whole concert was a pagan ritual in praise to Satan, drugs were consumed, the Lord's name was torn asunder in a so-called "Christian" concert, and in short, Jimmy got rich off the blatant misrepresentation of the band.

Honestly

[Verse 1]
Honestly, I believe in you
Do you trust in me
Patiently, I will stand by you
I will stand beside you faithfully

[Bridge]
And through the years
I will be a friend
For always and forever

[Chorus]
Call on me and I'll be there for you
I'm a friend who always will be true
And I love you can't you see
That I can say I love you honestly

[Solo]

[Chorus 2]
Call on me and I'll be there for you
I'm a friend who always will be true
And I love you can't you see
That I love you honestly
I will never betray your trust in me
And I love you can't you see
That I can say I love you honestly

Finally came the moment of truth: how well did Van Halen stack up with Sammy Hagar on board? The test came with their latest album 5150. The album, named after the Los Angeles police code for criminally insane, featured quite a few good numbers. To be sure, it wasn't Diamond Dave-era, but it actually held up. The keyboards were all over the place, and the band sounded rather rejuvenated. It was more song oriented and minus a little of the trademark shredder flash that Eddy was into doing on his guitar on albums past. It was the start of the new Van Halen--or Van Hagar, to those who were disappointed by David Lee Roth's departure.

Why Can't This Be Love?

Whoa, here it comes
That funny feelin' again windin'
Me up inside
Every time we touch
Hey, I don't know
Oh, tell me where to begin
'Cause I never ever
Felt so much. Hey!

No I can't recall any love at all
Oh baby, this blows 'em all away

It's got what it takes
So tell me why can't this be love?
Straight from the heart oh tell
Me why
Can't this be love?

I tell myself,
"Hey! Only fools rush in" an only
Time will tell
If we stand the test of time
All I know
You've got to run to win an' I'll
Be damned if
I'll get hung up on the line. Hey!

No, I can't recall any love at all
Oh baby, this blows 'em all away

Woo! It's got what it takes
So tell me why can't this be love?
You want it straight from the heart oh, tell
Me why
Can't this be love?

(Guitar Solo)

Woo! It's got what it takes
So tell me why can't this be love?
Straight from the heart, oh tell
Me why
Can't this be love?

Baby, why can't this be love?
Got to know why can't this
Be love?
I wanna know why can't this
Be love?

Best of Both Worlds

I don't know what I've been livin' on, but
It's not enough to fill me up
I need more than just words can say
I need everything this life can give me. Hey-hey yeah
'Cause sometimes it's not enough. Ow!

Come on baby, close your eyes, let go
This can be everything we dreamed
It's not work that makes it work, oh
No, let the magic do the work for you

'Cause honey, something reached out and touched me
Now I know all I want

I want the best of both worlds
An' honey I know what it's worth
If we could have the best of both worlds
We'd have heaven right here on earth. Woo!

Well, there's a picture in a gallery of
A fallen angel looked a lot like you
We forget where we come from sometimes
I had a dream it was really you

Something reached out and touched me
Now I know all I want

I want the best of both worlds
An' honey I know what it's worth
If we could have the best of both worlds
A little bit o' heaven right here on earth, oh

Whoa, you don't have to die an' go to heaven
Or hang around to be born again
Just tune in to what this place has got to offer
'Cause we may never be here again. Ow!

I want the best of both worlds
An' honey I know what it's worth
If we could have the best of both worlds
A little heaven right here on earth. Come on!

I want the best of both worlds
An' honey I know what it's worth
We can have the best of both worlds
A little heaven right here on earth, yeah

Tell me, is it enough? Wow!
Now will it ever be enough? Wow-oh-oh-oh-ooh-ooh

This is one of the greatest, most beautiful songs that Van Halen has ever done with Sammy Hagar:

Love Walks In

Contact is all that it takes
To change your life, to lose your place in time
Contact. Asleep or awake
Coming around you may wake up to find

(Ooo-ooo-ooo)
Questions deep within your eyes
(Ooo-ooo-ooo)
Now more than ever, you realize
(Ooo-ooo)

And then you sense a change
Nothin' feels the same
All your dreams are strange
Love comes walkin' in
Some kind of alien
Waits for the opening
Simply pulls a string

Another world, some other time
You lay your sanity on the line
Familiar faces, familiar sights
Reach back, remember with all your might

(Ooo-ooo-ooo)
Ooh, and there she stands in a silken gown
(Ooo-ooo-ooo)
Silver lights shinin' down
(Ooo-ooo)

And then you sense a change
Nothin' feels the same
All your dreams are strange
Love comes walkin' in
Some kind of alien
Waits for the opening
Simply pulls a string
Love comes walkin' in

(Guitar Solo)

Oh, sleep and dream; that's all I crave
I travel far across the milky way
To my master I become a slave
'Til we meet again some other day

(Ooo-ooo-ooo)
Where silence speaks as loud as war
(Ooo-ooo-ooo)
Earth returns to what it was before
(Ooo-ooo)

And then you sense a change
Nothin' feels the same
All your dreams are strange
Love comes walkin' in
Some kind of alien
Waits for the opening
Simply pulls a string
Love comes walkin' in

(Guitar Solo)

Love comes walkin' in
Baby, pull the string
Love comes walkin' in
Love comes walkin' in, yeah!
Huh-uh! Ye-ah, oh-oh oh

Dreams

World turns black and white
Pictures in an empty room
Your love starts fallin' down
Better change your tune
Yeah, you reach for the golden ring
Reach for the sky
Baby, just spread your wings

We'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
We'll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind

Run, run, run away
Like a train runnin' off the track
Got the truth bein' left behind
Falls between the cracks
Standin' on broken dreams
Never losin' sight, ah
Well just spread your wings

We'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
We'll get higher and higher
Leave it all behind

So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you've cried
Oh, that's what dreams are made of
'Cause we belong in a world that must be strong
Oh, that's what dreams are made of

Yeah, we'll get higher and higher
Straight up we'll climb
Higher and higher
Leave it all behind
Oh, we'll get higher and higher
Who knows what we'll find?

So baby dry your eyes
Save all the tears you've cried
Oh, that's what dreams are made of
Oh baby, we belong in a world that must be strong
Oh, that's what dreams are made of

And in the end on dreams we will depend
'Cause that's what love is made of

Summer Nights

Uh!

Hey!

Oh yeah!

Ain't no way I'm sittin' home tonight
I'll be out until the mornin' light
A-just-a hangin' 'round let me look for parkin' lots
Oh, checkin' out all the girls, see what they got

Wow! 'Cause they love it, when me an' the boys
Wanna play some love with them human toys
Woq! We wind 'em up n' let 'em go. Whoa! Oh yeah
Whoa yeah!

Woo! Summer nights and my radio
(Ah-ah) Well that's all we need, baby. Don'tcha know?
We celebrate when the gang's all here
(Ah-ah) Ah, hot summer nights, that's my time of the year-ow!

We made it through the cold
And that freezin' snow is gettin' old, hey!
Next year I'll head out for the coast
Whaddya say fellas? That might just call for a toast
Now whaddya say?

And I got a line, (Ooh-ooh) you grab that pole (Ooh-ooh)
I'll meet you down at (Ooh-ooh) the ole fishin' hole
Wow! Them girls are bitin' good tonight
Ow! Uh-Oh! Whoa yeah!

Summer nights and my radio
(Ah-ah) Well that's all we need, baby. Don'tcha know? (Summer nights)
We celebrate when the gang's all here
(Ah-ah) Hot summer nights, you're my time of the year-ow!

Huh!

Uh!

Yeah-yeah!-ow!

(Ah-ah. Summer nights) You wanna talk about love?
(Ah-ah. Summer nights) In the heat of the summer
(Ah-ah. Summer nights) Well let's talk about love
(Ah-ah. Summer nights) On a hot summer night. Hey!

In the heat of the summer
Well let's talk about love on a hot summer night. Hey!

David Lee Roth was not idle either--his first full official solo album,
Eat'em and Smile was released around the same time as 5150. On this album he planned to create the dream band that would challenge Van Halen's rock supremacy--and he nearly did with guitar gunslinger Steve Vai, formerly of Frank Zappa's band and even John Lydon's PiL band:eek:, and former Talas bassist Billy Sheehan. Both Vai and Sheehan were human dynamos on their instruments, Eddy and Michael Anthony were about to be given a run for their money on the new Diamond Dave album and upcoming tour. :eat:

Everyone remembers the video to this song:

Yankee Rose

What? Well, let me roll up on to the sidewalk and take a look…
Yes, whoa! She's beautiful
I'm talkin' about a Yankee Rose
And she looks wild, wild, wild, wild!

Are you ready for the new sensation
Well here's a shot heard 'round the world
All you back room boys salute
When her flag unfurls
Well guess who's back in circulation
Now I don't know
What you may have heard
But what I need right now's
The original good time girl

She's a vision from coast to coast
Sea to shining sea
Hey sister you're the perfect host
(Make a toast)
Show me your bright lights
And your city lights, all right
I'm talkin' 'bout the Yankee Rose
(Your) bright lights
And your city lights, all right
I'm talkin' bout it

When she walks
Watch the sparks will fly
Firecrackin' on the Fourth of July
No sad songs tonight
Something's in the air
Yeah, the feeling gets you
A real state of independence
So pretty when her rockets flare
Still provin' every night
That her flag's still there

She's a vision from coast to coast
Sea to shining sea
Hey sister you're the perfect host
(Make a toast)
Show me your bright lights
And your city lights, all right
I'm talkin' 'bout the Yankee Rose
(Your) bright lights
And your city lights, all right
I'm in love with a Yankee Rose

Oh she's beautiful all right
Nothin' like her in the whole world
Yeah she's right on time
I'm on the case
Pick up the phone
No time to waste
She's got the beat
And there's a little bit
Comin' your way

Oh raise 'em up there
Let's see who salutes baby
Little bit, little bit, little bit higher
Here's the mast
Swing 'em from here
I wanna get
A little bit of apple pie man

Bright lights, city lights
Bright lights, city lights...

Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, and drummer Greg Bissoinette had a lot to be nervous that night of the first David Lee Roth concert. Would they go down in a storm, or would it be a disaster? They had plenty of butterflies in their stomach those few seconds as they stepped out onto the stage to the roar of the crowd and began their opening number, Van Halen's "On Fire." By the time Dave and the boys had finished their blitzkrieg of a rocker, the crowd was gobbling out of their hand. The concert was spectacular!! Dave was being his usual wildman self with backless leather trousers, hopping on an inflatable microphone, Steve Vai with his double-necked pink heart-shaped Ibanez guitar, and so much more. This was the concert event of the year!

And we all remember this video:

Goin' Crazy

Well, here I'm rollin' down another sunny highway,
been in the sun too long.
I'm goin' coconuts but least I'm goin' my way,
I'll prob'bly be here when that sun goes down.

I wanna live it up, wanna quit my job,
tell the boss to go to hell.
I ain't complainin', you do the best with what you got.
I know you're laughin' 'cause it's easy to tell

I'm goin' crazy,
goin' crazy,
oo, from the heat.

Remember dancing on the pier last night?
Got drunk and fell into the water.
The big policeman wasn't laughing, didn't blink an eye,
he said, "You're messin' with the mayor's daughter."

Don't tell me, "Give it up", too busy getting down,
I learned my lessons well.
You get it goin' and you don't never stop.
I know you're laughin' 'cause it's easy to tell

I'm goin' crazy,
goin' crazy,
oo, from the heat.

Goin' crazy,
goin' crazy,
oo, from the heat.

Goin' crazy,
goin' crazy,
oo, from the heat.

Goin' crazy,
goin' crazy,
oo, from the heat.

This is the rocking'est song on the album. Steve Vai's guitar work is sheer genius.

Elephant Gun

Every inch of you looks like a lady
So don't get caught here in the city at nite
And if you wanna take a chance and go down crazy
I sell protection for a price

(pre-chorus)
Well, call it love or call it murder
This is the crime of the century
No, don't point that thing on me

(chorus)
All in all my aim is better
Shots as clean as a mean goal-getter
A bad man on the run
I'm gonna be your dark stranger
Contact man 'tween you and danger
I'll protect you baby with my elephant gun

Every minute counts and you play both sides of the law
Mm, these dangerous days
Mean nine lives doin' anything at all
A lot of folks been blown away

(pre-chorus)

(chorus)

Bang!

Don't try to use that thing on me

And of course, Diamond Dave wasn't about to let the show-tune side of him slip away:

That's Life

That's life, That's Life
that's what all the people say.
You're riding high on Monday,
shot down in May.
But I, I ain't never gonna change my tune
when I'm back on top in the month of June.

I said, that's life. That's Life
Ain't as funny as it may seem,
some people get their kicks
stompin' on a dream.
But I, I don't never let it get me down
'cause that big ol' world keeps spinnin' 'round.

Been a puppet, pirate, a poet, a pauper, a pawn and a king.
Been up and down and over and out and I know one thing:
each time that I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race.

That's life, That's Life
And I can't deny it,
many times I thought of quitting, babe,
but my heart wouldn't buy it.
If I didn't think it was worth one try
I'd jump right on a big bucket and fly.

Been a puppet, poet, pirate, pauper; now I'm a king.
Been up, down, I know one thing:
each time that I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race.

That's life, That's Life
And I can't deny it,
many times I thought of quitting, babe,
but my heart wouldn't buy it.
If I didn't think it was worth one try
I'd just roll myself up in a big ball and fly.

Now a free agent after leaving KISS, Vinnie Vincent formed his own band, the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, with guitarist Mark Slaughter and bassist Dana Strum (who, coincidentally, discovered Randy Rhoads for Ozzy's band in 1979). The album was an over-the-top
shred-fest of excess and extravagance: the band's outfits were loud, the guitars were louder and faster than anything Vinnie could have gotten away with in KISS, and the videos were total sonic assaults on the ears with wild instrument-bashing for a good five minutes. At the end of a video, Vincent literally spent longer than the actual song bashing a poor defenseless guitar to death--and in a million pieces--on an amplifier that was feeding back like mad.

Like the album cover he posed for on W.A.S.P.'s Inside the Electric Circus, Blackie Lawless literally felt like a caged animal. The poster boy for all that was wrong with music and pop culture according to the P.M.R.C. was being literally chased and monitored by the FBI merely for being named by Tipper Gore.
One of rock's most notorious rebels in the 80's was shaking in his boots over the surveillance the ultra-conservative government was giving him. Being a bad boy had not come without a price. He was appalled that rednecks down South in the hillbilly hinterland would love to have killed him for allegedly being the Antichrist. The situation was so bad for the band that their latest album was a musical disappointment for him--in fact, he thought of it as "the biggest piece of s:censored: anyone has ever recorded." That said, it did give a pretty decent anthem and video:

I Don't Need No Doctor

I don't need no doctor
'Cause I know what's ailing me
I don't need no doctor
'Cause I know what's ailing me (yes, I do)
All I need is my baby
You don't know I'm in misery
I don't need no doctor

I don't need no doctor
My prescription tells me that
I don't need no doctor
My prescription tells me that
I don't need no doctor
All I need is my baby
You don't know I'm in misery
I don't need no doctor

Well, the doctor said I need the rest - ooh, ooh
He put me on the critical list - ooh, ooh
Keeping me safe from harm - ooh, ooh
All I need is her sweet charm - ooh, ooh

Hard to handle, a fire in her eyes
Wants the hot rocks right in her hand

A come-on look and she ain't fooling
And she knows just what it does
She gave me a number to make me feel fine

I don't even care if I'm being used
Threw me down and then she tore off my jeans
She said, come on, babe, I mean business

AC/DC's Who Made Who was the closest that the band came to making a "greatest hits" album. In fact, it was the soundtrack to 'Maximum Overdrive', a sci-fi movie written by Stephen King about a town terrorized by machines that took over the local populace. The movie was so-so, but the soundtrack was decent--and the movie contained an Angus Young guitar-version of the "shower"-theme music in Alfred Hitchcock's "Pyscho"!

Stephen King was an admitted fan of AC/DC.

Who Made Who

The video game says "Play me"
Face it on a level but it takes you every time on a one on one
Feeling running down your spine
Nothing gonna save your one last dime cause it owns you
Through and through

The databank knows my number
Says I gotta pay cause I made the grade last year
Feel it when I turn the screw
Kicks you round the world, there ain't a thing that it can't do
Do to you

CHORUS:
Who made who, who made you?
Who made who, ain't nobody told you?
Who made who, who made you?
If you made them and they made you
Who picked up the bill, and who made who? (or who picked up the glue,...)(?)

Who made who, who turned the screw?

Satellites send me picture
Get it in the eye,
take it to the world (take it to the wire)
spinning like a dynamo
Feel it going round and round
Running out of chips, you got no line in an 8-bit town
So don't look down, no

CHORUS

Ain't nobody told you, who made who?

Yngwie Malmsteen returned with Trilogy, which firmly planted him in the "Dungeons and Dragons" phase of metal guitar rock. It wasn't just neo-classical or "Bach-rock" anymore, it was all about music to fight mythical beasts by.

You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget

It was you, it was me,
And we would last forever.
Any fool could see, that we were
Meant to be

Without you, there is no meaning to
My life.
You're gone and it cuts me like
A knife.
How could you leave me?

You don't remember, I'll never forget
You just don't remember, I'll never forget.

Why did you turn away,
Let your love fade away and die.
You became so cold, you made me feel
So old.

When you left, you broke my heart
And just to see.
How many pieces there would be,
After you leave me.

You don't remember, I'll never forget
You just don't remember, I'll never forget

No doubt Yngwie would make the cover of many guitar magazines--as much as he both inspired and bored many players.
Ying Yang--er, Yngwie was not impressed by other guitar players, except for Jimi Hendrix and Ritchie Blackmore. He became thoroughly engrossed in classical music, and felt that using lead singers was only a means to an end, namely, his own commercial success. In order for his neo-classical genius to have an audience, in other words, he had to accommodate to the metal public's desire to have hit songs. No wonder that he barely had the same band lineup twice.

You can't feel, you just steal

One "shred" guitarist actually was quite musically accessible to budding guitarists, Joe Satriani, from San Francisco. He was known to be a guitar teacher to many great guitarists such as Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, and many others who would take center stage in the years to come. He was a friendly, sociable sort of person whose music was both complex and at the same time had commercial potential. His 1986 album Not of This Earth, featured instrumentals such as "Hordes of Locusts", "Rubina" (for his wife), and the title track.

I'll Be There For You

In the shadows, we all let go
Walk away before it breaks our hearts
Dreams can fall through, trouble finds you
Who will hold us in our darkest hour
Heartache callin', we can't hold it in now
Find a way we'll make it through the night

I'll be there for you
When you need someone
If you get lost down a dark, lonely road
I'll play on your side
You can count on me, just say the word and I'll
Be there for you
Be there for you

On the ouland, see the empty faces
Turn their eyes away, don't hear your voice
Find a true friend, you're a rich man
Live a little and have too much choice
Friends and lovers, shouldn't be like strangers
We've come to far to ever turn away

I'll be there for you
When you need someone
If you get lost down a dark, lonely road
I'll play on your side
You can count on me, just say the word and I'll
Be there for you
Be there for you

And it hurts to be lonely
It's the coldest game in town
Won't be afraid if we only
Oh, just let it out

I'll play on your side
You can count on me
Just say the word and I'll
Be there for you
Be there for you

Actually, Alice Cooper had not really left the music scene, he had just had a hard time re-adjusting to the rock and metal scene after his 70's heyday had come and gone. He had released albums such as Special Forces and Dada, which featured a painting on the cover by his old friend the Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali, but the music on that album was so avant-garde and uncommercial (just like in the earlier days of the Alice Cooper band in the late 60's) that it got zero airplay. (Dada is the name of a minimalist modern art movement that was popular during World War I that proclaimed the breakdown of traditional art.) But in 1986, his album Constrictor signalled a new popularity in the veteran shock rock star. His touring band also included a talented bassist by the name of Kip Winger.

Teenage Frankenstein

I'm the kid on the block
With my head made of rock
And I ain't got nobody
I'm the state of the art
Got a brain a la carte
I make the babies cry
I ain't one of the crowd
I ain't one of the guys
They just avoid me
They run and they hide
Are my colours too bright
Are my eyes set too wide
I spend my whole life
Burning, turning

I'm a teenage Frankenstein
The local freak with the twisted mind
I'm a teenage Frankenstein
These ain't my hands
And these legs ain't mine

Got a synthetic face
Got some scars and a brace
My hands are rough and bloody
I walk into the night
Women faint at the sight
I ain't no cutie-pie
I can't walk in the day
I must walk in the night
Stay in the shadows
Stay out of the light
Are my shoulders too wide
Is my head screwed on tight
I spend my whole life
Burning, turning

I'm a teenage Frankenstein
The local freak with the twisted mind
I'm a teenage Frankenstein
These ain't my hands
And these legs ain't mine

Say Goodbye

A child was born on a cold and windy night
Not far away from the burning village lights
Another son in a poor family
Bit short on money but the loving ran free

And as he grew from a boy to a man
His mama cried but he didn't understand
Somehow she knew oh that someday he would go
Into the world and a life of his own

Say goodbye but never deny
All the love you're leaving behind
Don't forget all the feelings you know
They'll be with you wherever you go

Out in the world he's been living the good life
House, car and money with a true and loving wife
A child is born to this new family
They gave her everything with love guaranteed

And as she grew and the quarrels began
Her papa cried but she didn't understand
Somehow he know oh that someday she would go
Into the world and a life of her own

Queensryche released Rage For Order which was the first step toward the band establishing their own identity, in this case, as a band who wrote about certain themes, much in the way Rush had. On this one, the theme was about order. The band was also re-inventing its look, and vocalist Geoff Tate had developed the most bizarre hairstyle and fashion sense of any band out there at that time. Many rock fans had concluded he must have been "gay". It was quite radical for them.

I like to look at shadows sweating on the wall
I get excited when I hear footsteps in the hall
Outside your balcony I have a room with a view
And I'm watching you

I dial your telephone each and every afternoon
I wait by your door till you're asleep at night
And when you're alone I know when you
Turn out the light

I'm gonna get close to you
Oh-Oh so close to you
I'm gonna get close to you
I'm gonna get close

You fumble for your keys
I'm six or seven steps behind you
I'm so close to you
Are you terrified of me? What do I know about you
How did I find out?
You think I'm a fool or maybe some kind of lunatic
Say I'm wasting my time but I know what to do with it
It's as plain as black and white

I'm gonna get close to you
Oh-Oh so close to you
I'm gonna get close to you
Oh so close

If you knew my infinite charm
There'd be no reason to be so alarmed
Maybe I'm wrong maybe I'm right
Maybe I'm some kind of lunatic
You say I'm wasting all of my time
But I know what to do with it
It is plain as black and white

I'm gonna get close to you
Oh-Oh so close to you
I'm gonna get close to you

Chemical Youth (We Are Rebellion)

LEAD ME- the leftist cry as the right subsides

HEAR ME- the media mouth is open wide

SAVE ME- success is our hunger we need to feed

FREE ME- we will not lose to their anarchy!

We are your leaders-
we are rebellion!
aural supremists

we are rebellion!
we are future!

SHOW ME- the wave of eighties is #3

PRAISE ME- our religion is technology

CHANGE ME- alterations for the stigmatized

HELP ME - for the cause. Would you cross that line?

we are rebellion!
chemical youth scream

we are rebellion

If we don't stand together
we stand to lose the future
peace won't last forever
who will be the martyr you or me?

We can be the future
You and I the leaders, Help me!

If we don't stand together
We stand to lose the future
We are the last hope...but there's danger

The hairstyles of the members of Queensryche weren't the only spectacular feature of the band, their lyrics were about subjects few perfectly-coiffed bands of that time were willing to touch on.
The band was focused on modern society's obsession with technology:

Screaming In Digital

I am the beat of your pulse
The computer word made flesh
We are one you and I
We are versions of the same
When you can see what I feel
Don't turn your back on me
Or you might find that your dreams
Are only program cards

Your mind is open for me
Open for intake of all propaganda
Your Eyes see now what to see
My eyes see only the programs you give me

I'll teach you to laugh and to cry
They're really the same you'll see
All of the why's in your life
Are under my control
Feed me more lines
I will try to tell you all I can
Before the light you must know what lies
Behind my screams

I can't tell you all I know
Am I the son that you've always been wanting
There's more to me than what shows
Are you my father
The one that was promised

Hush now, I'll give all you need to know
and pre-live your dreams for you
You're a good boy

Freedom belongs only to those
Without video screens
For eyes and mouth

You have no voice
To be heard my son
No one can hear when you're
Screaming in Digital

I'm not your slave
You can't control my emotions
No Father, please let me keep learning

Can't you see I'm human
Can't you tell

I'm not your slave
Oh Father no
Please don't keep me from dreaming
Oh can't someone hear

I Will Remember

There's a cold wind out tonight
The chill of distant eyes
An orbit survey finds...your mind

I will remember
You will remember
The star that came tonight...

There's a thought that fills your mind
A vision of time
When knowledge was confined
And then we wonder how machines
Can steal each other's dreams
From points that are unseen...It's real

I will remember
You will remember
The star that came tonight

When you gaze at the evening sky
And you're reaching out with your mind
You might see the nation's eyes
Don't hide...It's you

I will remember
You will remember
The star that came tonight
Oh can't you see the light
Of the knowing star

Surgical Strike

It's lonely in the field
that we send our fighters to wander
They leave with minds of steel
It's their training solution
We've programmed the way
It leads us to order
There's no turning back

A Surgical Strike
We've taught them not to feel
performance is their task
A Surgical Strike
Its time is arriving now for you

The plan for the day
will be swift as the lightning they harness
The atom display is not mindless illusion
At master control, assessment will not
Be by humans-There's no turning back

A Surgical Strike
We've taught them not to feel
performance is their task
A Surgical Strike
Its time is arriving now for you

I Dream in Infrared

As you awoke this morning
and opened up your eyes
Did you notice the tear-stains
lining your face were mine

Don't you wonder, can't you see
what's happening to our lives
I can't keep living this masquerade
When my lonely eyes see only your face at night

I only see in infrared
I can't dream anymore
Can't you see I need, too
I can't stand the pain

You've gathered all my secrets
and I don't know who I am
I even feel alone when you're near
'cause you'll never understand

When we first met I must have seemed
a million miles away
It's strange how our lives have touched
But the time is right
I'll leave tonight
Don't look in my eyes
'Cause you've never seen them so black

I only see in infrared
I can't dream anymore
Can't you see I need to
I can't stand the pain

The Killing Words

Wait for me I'll understand
I just need time to comprehend your changes
There's always been these changes in you
I remember there was a time when
Fears we had we left behind and we danced
But it seems the more we learn
We’ll learn that it's over
Over
It's dangerous this game we play
Your killing me words

Forget if you can
The way you moved when our hands touched
You forced me to force you
Do you remember
All the dreams, the nightmare we shared?
The poison of love so pure it's deceiving
And deceit is all we have it's got to be over
Over
It's dangerous this game we play
Your killing me words
Over
Over
Too late to take a chance again it's over

Now the wireless in my hand is ringing
The distance of our lives keeps spreading
Pounding I hear my heart, I’m not listening
Your voice from far away is screaming it’s over
Over
Too late to take a chance again it's over
Over
Over
It's dangerous this game we play
You’re killing me,
Killing me!
Over
Over
You’re too late to take a chance again;
It’s over!

Neue Regel

Reach for a new horizon
Setting sights on a circuit scream
Hail the new arrival on
Static signs from a distant wanderer
Fill the air nights are never seen
Face the electric time shock now
No it's not a dream anymore

I will light the way for us to find
Order of a new kind
Join us on the stay the road is mine
Poets line in a rhyme of silence
Gathered from the winter air
Warms the children's eyes they see
The time is near for the signs

I can hear the chimes
Ringing for you for me
I can see your eyes
Your hands joining with me
I can feel its time
Come together hold the light
Keep the flame we can't let this world remain
the same

I can hear the chimes
Ringing for you for me
I can see your eyes
Your hands joining with me
I can feel it's time
It's time for the world to hear

Queensryche were not the only big noise coming from the Pacific Northwest. Another band were making a few local waves in the local underground scene, Green River was a sort of lo-fi, garage-y, sort of band that combined elements of metal, punk, and psychedelia into a murky musical stew that tasted much like the toxic sludge that could be found at the bottom of the Green River, a waterway south of Seattle that was made notorious by an elusive serial killer whose victims' bodies were disposed of in the densely wooded area. The members of the band included Andrew Wood on vocals, Steve Turner on guitar, Stone Gossard on guitar, Jeff Ament on bass, Bruce Fairweather on guitar who replaced Steve, and Alex Vincent on drums. They released an EP which featured songs such as "Rehab Doll" and "Dry As a Bone", but while it caused a bit of attention in the local Seattle scene, there was no way the music from this isolated part of the country would get much attention elsewhere.

Come On Down

C'mon down to the river...

Lift your eyes to the skies above
Come on in, feel my love
A little bit here, a little piece there
Pieces of love everywhere

C'mon down to the river...

The river runs shallow, the river goes deep
The river calls in your sleep
Dig this baby, now dig this hole
Your body's so warm, the river's so cold
And you are the one I want to hold
You're the one I want to hold
You're the one to fill this hole
You are the one I got to hold

C'mon down to the river...

Of course, the other big news in 1986 was the monumental release of Master of Puppets by Metallica. What was so significant about this release was that for the first time, a thrash metal band had hit the Top 30 in the charts. Metallica had made a bigger dent than anyone had ever expected! And the songs on the album were some of the most intense tracks ever recorded: "Battery," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "Disposable Heroes", "Damage, Inc.", and the title track, a horrific song about the dangers of cocaine addiction. The album was loud, fast, brutal, and expertly arranged and recorded. It ranks as one of the greatest metal albums of all time. The band was on its way to redefining metal.

Master of Puppets

End of passion play, crumbling away
I'm your source of self-destruction
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear
Leading on your death's construction

Taste me, you will see
More is all you need
You're dedicated to
How I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings, yeah
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Hell Yeah!

Needlework the way, never you betray
Life of death becoming clearer
Pain monopoly, ritual misery
Chop your breakfast on a mirror

Taste me you will see
More that's all you need
You're dedicated to
How I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings, yeah
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master

(Instrumental Break)

Master, master
Where's those dreams that I've been after?
Master, master
You promised only lies
Laughter, laughter
All I hear and see is laughter
Laughter, laughter
Laughing at my cries

FIX ME, BABY!

(solo)

Hell is worth all that, natural habitat
Just a rhyme without a reason
Never-ending maze, drift on numbered days
Now your life is out of season

I will occupy
I will help you die
I will run through you
Now I rule you, too

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master

Don't let the soft acoustic opening fool you. The song reaches through the speakers and PUMMELS you to the floor!! The greatest articulation of musical violence ever recorded.

Battery

Lashing out the action, returning the reaction
Weak are ripped and torn away
Hypnotizing power, crushing all that cower
Battery is here to stay

Smashing through the boundaries
lunacy has found me
cannot stop the Battery
Pounding out aggression
turns into obsession
cannot kill the Battery
Cannot kill the family
Battery is found in me
Battery
Battery

Crushing all deceivers, mashing non-believers
never ending potency
Hungry violence seeker, feeding off the weaker
Breeding on insanity

Smashing through the boundaries
lunacy has found me
cannot stop the Battery
Pounding out aggression
turns into obsession
cannot kill the Battery
Cannot kill the family
Battery is found in me
Battery
Battery

Circle of Destruction, Hammer comes crushing
Powerhouse of energy
Whipping up a fury, Dominating flurry
We create the Battery

Smashing through the boundaries
lunacy has found me
cannot stop the Battery
Pounding out aggression
turns into obsession
cannot kill the Battery
Cannot kill the family
Battery is found in me

This song is based on a novel by 1930's science fiction author H.P. Lovecraft. The character in the song is actually named The-Thing-That-Should-Not-Be-Named (otherwise known as Ktulu, as in Ride the Lightning's instrumental), but the band shortened the name to something that would fit the song.

The Thing That Should Not Be

Messenger of Fear in sight
Dark deception kills the light

Hybrid children watch the sea
Pray for Father, roaming free

fearless Wretch
insanity
He watches
lurking beneath the sea
great Old One
forbidden site
He searches
Hunter of the Shadows is rising
immortal
in madness You dwell

Crawling Chaos, underground
cult has summoned, twisted sound

Out from ruins once possessed
fallen city, living death

fearless Wretch
insanity
He watches
lurking beneath the sea
timeless sleep
has been upset
He awakens
Hunter of the Shadows is rising
immortal
in madness You dwell

Not dead which eternal lie
stranger eons Death may die

drain you of your sanity
face The Thing That Should Not Be

fearless Wretch
insanity
He watches
lurking beneath the sea
great Old One
forbidden site
He searches
Hunter of the Shadows is rising
immortal
in madness You dwell.

This has become one of the biggest Metallica songs, and a favorite in concert:

Welcome Home (Sanitarium)

Welcome to where time stands still
no one leaves and no one will
Moon is full, never seems to change
just labeled mentally deranged
Dream the same thing every night
I see our freedom in my sight
No locked doors, No windows barred
No things to make my brain seem scarred

Sleep my friend and you will see
that dream is my reality
They keep me locked up in this cage
can't they see it's why my brain says Rage

Sanitarium, leave me be
Sanitarium, just leave me alone

Build my fear of what's out there
and cannot breathe the open air
Whisper things into my brain
assuring me that I'm insane
They think our heads are in their hands
but violent use brings violent plans
Keep him tied, it makes him well
he's getting better, can't you tell?

No more can they keep us in
Listen, damn it, we will win
They see it right, they see it well
but they think this saves us from our Hell

Sanitarium, leave me be
Sanitarium, just leave me alone
Sanitarium, just leave me alone

Fear of living on
natives getting restless now
Mutiny in the air
got some death to do
Mirror stares back hard
Kill, it's such a friendly word
seems the only way
for reaching out again.

This is perhaps Metallica's most intense song they have ever recorded:

Disposable Heroes

Bodies fill the fields I see, hungry heroes end
No one to play soldier now, no one to pretend
running blind through killing fields, bred to kill them all
Victim of what said should be
a servant `til I fall

[Chorus:]
Soldier boy, made of clay
now an empty shell
twenty one, only son
but he served us well
Bred to kill, not to care
just do as we say
finished here, Greeting Death
he's yours to take away

Back to the front
you will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front
you will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front
you coward
you servant
you blindman
[End Chorus]

Barking of machinegun fire, does nothing to me now
sounding of the clock that ticks, get used to it somehow
More a man, more stripes you bare, glory seeker trends
bodies fill the fields I see
the slaughter never ends

[Chorus]

Why, Am I dying?
Kill, have no fear
Lie, live off lying
Hell, Hell is here

I was born for dying

Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
had no chance to see myself, molded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
left to die with only friend
Alone I clench my gun

[Chorus]

Back to the front.

One of the themes that Metallica explored on Master was the theme of power and manipulation, either by drugs, the military, and on this song, by religious demagogues. By 1986, television preachers had a monopoly over the expression of ideas and even on the marketplace--and even on rock and roll. Below is a picture of Jimmy Swaggart, who made millions from his immensely successful television program by influencing people to believe that rock and roll was "demonic" music. His message was so powerful that Sam Walton, head of Wal-Mart, decided to stop selling rock albums and music magazines, including Rolling Stone and Tiger Beat.

Leper Messiah

Spineless from the start, sucked into the part
circus comes to town, you play the lead clown
Please, please
spreading his disease, living by his story
Knees, knees
falling to your knees, suffer for his glory
You will

[Chorus]
Time for lust, time for lie
time to kiss your life goodbye
Send me money, send me green
Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution
and you'll get a better seat
[End Chorus]

Bow to Leper Messiah

Marvel at his tricks, need your Sunday fix
blind devotion came, rotting your brain
Chain, chain
Join the endless chain
Stinking by his glamour
Fame, Fame
Infection is the game, stinking drunk with power
We see

[Chorus]

Bow to Leper Messiah

Witchery, weakening
Sees the sheep are gathering
set the trap, hypnotize
now you follow

[Chorus]

Lie.

One of the biggest amounts of exposure for Metallica came when they opened for Ozzy Osbourne on his 1986 tour. But oddly, while many people were ecstatic about Metallica opening, others were confused and still more disliked the Bay Area bashers. It was just a little too different, a little too loud, a little too fast for some. Metallica had a way to go before conquering all. As Lars Ulrich said, "Some said, 'yeayyyy!!!' Most said, 'boooo!!!' and others said, 'HUH???'"

One of the things that Metallica liked to do before going onstage was warm up by playing Black Sabbath songs. Ozzy came backstage and asked them why they were giving him a hard time.
The band replied, "We're just mad for Sabbath!!" Ozzy was puzzled. "What--Sabbath-mad??" He thought it was odd that bands such as Metallica actually liked his old music. He would find that Black Sabbath had more of an impact than he ever realized in years to come.

Note in an earlier picture that James Hetfield is shown onstage without his guitar. He broke his arm skateboarding, and earlier, the rest of the band had to go on and tell the audience that Metallica were not able to play that night because of it. The audience REALLY had something to boo about!

But that would be nothing compared to a disaster that lie down the road...

Damage, Inc.

Dealing out the agony within
charging hard and no one's gonna give in
Living on your knees, conformity
or dying on your feet for honesty
Inbred, our bodies work as one
bloody, but never cry submission
Following our instinct not a trend
go against the grain until the end

[Chorus:]
Blood will follow blood
Dying time is here
Damage Incorporated
[End Chorus]

Slamming through, don't f:censored: with razorback
stepping out? You'll feel our hell on your back
Blood follows blood and we make sure
life ain't for you and we're the cure
Honesty is my only excuse
Try to rob us of it, but it's no use
Steamroller action crushing all
Victim is your name and you shall fall

[Chorus]

We chew and spit you out
we laugh, you scream and shout
All flee, with fear you run
You'll know just where we come from

Damage Incorporated

Damage jackals ripping right through you
sight and smell of this, it gets me goin'
Know just how to get just what we want
tear it from your soul in nightly hunt
F:censored: it all and f:censored: no regrets
Never happy ending on these dark sets

step a little closer if you please

Tragedy struck Metallica while they toured Europe on the Master of Puppets tour. On September 27, 1986, in the early morning hours between concerts in Sweden and Denmark, Metallica's van hit a patch of ice and skidded off the highway onto its side. Cliff Burton happened to be lying on a bunk and fell through an open window. The bus fell on top of him, killing him instantly.

The other band members and crew were injured as the bunks and their belongings lies tossed in disarray. They waited for hours until help arrived. Metallica's road manager told the crew to take the band back to a hotel. Knowing of the terrible loss of their beloved bassist, Lars was shocked: The BAND?? "We were not 'the band' any more." Not without Cliff. At the hotel, the rest of Metallica were so devastated and enraged at the tragedy they drank and smashed the hotel room to pieces. Kirk was so rattled that he slept with the lights on.

Meanwhile, while all those silly white guys in the suburbs were banging their heads to all this stuff, the R&B world herald a major talent. She was beautiful, classy, talented, and. . .was not related to Dionne Warwick. So I'm not talking about Whitney Houston!

Anita Baker was a telephone receptionist from Detroit who was encouraged to sing by people who spoke to her on the phone and liked the pleasant peal of her voice. Her 1983 debut album, The Songstress didn't atract much attention, by her 1986 follow-up Rapture was a massive success with the press and the public. It produced two hit singles, "Caught Up In the Rapture" and "Sweet Love," and vaulted Baker to the top of the soul world. And she didn't need pink hair, outrageous videos, obscene rap lyrics, or concert special effects to do it.

All she had was a great voice and a lot of genuine emotion. :)

In addition to the huge success of Master of Puppets, Megadeth, the ugly sister band of Metallica, released a speed-metal masterpiece that became one of their biggest albums, Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? The band was at fine form, the guitars would shift into overdrive at a dizzying pace at various tempo changes, and Dave Mustaine's distinctive snarl was top notch for lyrics of biting social commentary such as the title track.
In fact, Dave Ellefson's bass line would be used for a number of years in MTV News theme music.

And who could forget the excellent video full of warlike images, where a young headbanger sits in front of the t.v. getting into the video and music as his yuppie father marches in, bellowing,
"What is this garbage you're watching?? I want to watch the news!!" He switches the remote to a tepid news channel when the young rocker switches it back to the video, saying, "This
is the news!!"

Spoken like a true American. patriot:

Peace Sells

What do you mean, "I don't believe in God"?
I talk to him every day.
What do you mean, "I don't support your system"?
I go to court when I have to.
What do you mean, "I can't get to work on time"?
I got nothing better to do
And, what do you mean, "I don't pay my bills"?
Why do you think I'm broke? Huh?

[Chorus:]
If there's a new way,
I'll be the first in line.
But, it better work this time.

What do you mean, "I hurt your feelings"?
I didn't know you had any feelings.
What do you mean, "I ain't kind"?
I'm just not your kind.
What do you mean, "I couldn't be president, of the United States of America"?
Tell me something, it's still "We the people", right?

[Chorus: (repeat)]
If there's a new way
I'll be the first in line,
But, it better work this time.

Can you put a price on peace?
Peace,
Peace sells...,
Peace,
Peace sells...,
Peace sells...,but who's buying?
Peace sells...,but who's buying?
Peace sells...,but who's buying?
Peace sells...,but who's buying?
[n+1 times more]
No, peace sells...
