GET A GLIMPSE OF THE BEST OF THE WORST TELEVISION SHOWS,ON ABC’S “THE BEST TV SHOWS THAT NEVER WERE”

An all-new one-hour special celebrates the most unusual, outrageous and bizarre unsold pilots for TV series that never were, on “The Best TV Shows That Never Were,” airing MONDAY, AUGUST 16 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET ), on the ABC Television Network.

For every television series that makes it onto the small screen each year, there are hundreds that don’t make the grade. “The Best TV Shows That Never Were” pays tribute to those pilots that didn’t get sold, showcasing outrageously funny clips from every possible genre, including sci-fi, comedy, drama
and crime shows.

Highlights include stars such as Dennis Franz, Tom Selleck, Linda Hamilton, Keanu Reeves, Stockard Channing, Marg Helgenberger and the late Robert Urich in pilots that barely hint at the success these actors would later enjoy. Even the titles speak for themselves: “Ethel is an Elephant,” “Fuzzbucket,” “Poochinski,” “Wishman,” “A Dog’s Life” and “The Ultimate Importer.”

Steve Gerbson, Lee Goldberg and William Rabkin are all executive producers of the special, which was directed by Gerbson and written by Goldberg & Rabkin. “The Best TV Shows That Never Were” is based on the book “Unsold Television Pilots,” written by Lee Goldberg. This special is produced by Steve Gerbson Productions and Triax Multiproducts International.

This program carries a TV-PG parental guideline.

 Yay! I have the one CBS did in...1996 or 97 that Faith Ford hosted. That one was hilarious. "The Man.....with the Power!!"

I loved The Man With The Power. In my family we still use it a a reference point for really bad tv.

Odd , Yahoo! and TVGuide.com list the special for WABC, though.

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but I saw a commerical on ABC for a special they're going to air, it's called, "The Best Shows You Never Saw". I think it looks very interesting. I've always been a fan of obscure stuff, so this special intrigues me greatly.

Apparently it's going to be on sometime next week...I didn't catch the exact date, but I'm sure they'll run the commercial again and I can find out.

I can't wait to watch! :)

Just a bump to remind everyone that this is airing tonight. In less than thirty minutes.

Is it possible they'll broadcast it late, like after Jimmy Kimmel since it's being pre-empted in prime time? That's what stations usually do.

Hopefully.
They did that a lot this past season with 8 Simple Rules

That was incredibly surreal. Some of the pilots they showed clips of are just insane. Seriously, a cop whose son is killed, only to return as a toy dragon who, when threatened, turns into a giant, fire-breathing mechanical dragon?

On the flipside, I recognized several, including one with Scott Bakula, The Questor Tapes with Mike Farrell, and Red Dwarf. What the special failed to mention is the fact that the Red Dwarf pilot was an Americanzed version of the cult British series. I have added a write-up, some images and a video clip to this (http://tvobscurities.com/pages/pilots00.php) page at my site, for any who are interested. Simply scroll down.

All in all, the special was great. One problem I had was the fact that several of the pilots have actually aired, although none were ever picked up. Promotional spots for the special made iit seem to me that they would all be unseen, unsold pilots.

Still, a great special. Glad I taped it.

I noticed a couple of those shows were also shown on the 1996 CBS special. They even started out the same way...with a clip from Pulp Fiction.

It was incrediably funny. Sadly some of thoes series actually looked like they could have had promise. Lori Laughlin look beautiful in the Keanu Reeves show, the show with Stockard Channing (The Proscuters) looked like it would have been amazing. The Marg Helgenberger show looked rather decent as well. just ahead of its time, it scary how much like CSI it was. I would have watched the one with Keaun Reeves! and the rest all well, its a good thing they didn't make it past pilot.

I saw part of it and frankly I didn't think much of it. It was cute to see people you knew in early roles or later depending on when you first saw the star. But I mainly saw all the sci fi shows which didnt impressed me much. The show in which actors played dogs, gee how far low can they go.??

that sitcom where Ryan Stiles played a robot looked like it would have been pretty good, and would of lasted for at least 1 season if it had been picked up.

But; that one where the cops son becomes a toy dragon!!  I can't BELEIVE they actually thought people might like that!
