Mark Hacking Arrested for Murder

SALT LAKE CITY — Mark Hacking has been arrested for the murder of his pregnant wife, Lori Hacking, Salt Lake City police said Monday.

Authorities haven't found Lori Hacking's body, detectives said in a news conference.

The arrest came after the investigation into the young woman's disappearance took a grim turn, as authorities redirected their attention to a landfill and her relatives asked volunteers to stop looking for her in response to new information from the woman's husband.

Detectives said Sunday that Mark Hacking, who had been in a psychiatric ward, directed a relative to give police the information about Lori Hacking's disappearance. Authorities would only say that the relative provided "additional substantive new information," said Detective Dwayne Baird.

Police initially said they were surprised when the families of Mark and Lori Hacking released a statement Saturday asking that volunteers stop searching for 27-year-old Lori Hacking based on new detail from her husband. The statement did not say what Mark Hacking had told them.

After speaking to the relative, Baird said police would renew a search at the municipal landfill, where a quadrant was cordoned off two days after Mark Hacking reported his wife missing July 19. Three border collies, a German shepherd and Labrador retriever searched the area without luck.

This time around, cadaver dogs will not be available until Friday, when the all-night searching can begin, Baird said.

Mark Hacking's parents, Douglas and Janet Hacking, refused to comment Sunday, as did his lawyer.

Lori Hacking's father, Eraldo Soares, said late Saturday he was unaware of any new information about his daughter. He did not return phone messages left Sunday.

Since Mark Hacking reported his wife missing, his credibility has crumbled amid revelations that he lied to his wife about enrolling at medical school in North Carolina and about graduating from the University of Utah.

The day after her disappearance, he was taken to the psychiatric ward after he was seen running around at night naked outside a motel where he'd taken a room.

Investigators focused on Mark Hacking, 28, after learning he was at a store buying a new mattress just before reporting his wife missing. Authorities were later seen removing a box spring from the couple's apartment. Investigators have refused to confirm reports that they found a mattress in a nearby trash bin.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Not a big surprise, given his deceitful history.

Just once I'd like to see them publicize the murder case in which the wife killed the pregnant husband. :p *

Hey, I'm not above making fun of myself when I've said something only to have it blow up in my face.....

*For those of you thinking I've lost my mind, well, you're right, but that's beside the point. That's actually a reference to an earlier post, when this all started, in which I criticized people for automatically assuming the husband did it. Whoops.

I don't understand why the police didn't want to call him a suspect. I hope he fries.

I hope they shoot that S.O.B. in the balls.
And then her family could stab and decapitate him like he did to his wife.

I agree I hope they throw the book at him and kill him in the same way he killed his wife because I think the Death Penalty(i.e the chair or lethal injection) is too good for him.

Husband kills pregnant wife... makes me think of poor Laci Petterson..

Anyway, this guy sounds like a total whack-job. I hope he rots in jail. Forget the chair, suffering in prision for life is enough to make anyone go insane... not that he needs it, or anything.

Obviously you didn't hear about the lady in Texas who ran over her husband a BUNCH of times after finding him at a hotel with another woman. That was BIG news down here.

That's what I think. The death penalty wouldn't serve the purpose. Lock up the whacko in jail for the rest of his life. Make him suffer more than his wife did.

If you call suffering getting 3 meals a day, somke once a day, workout everyday, have a roof over his head, possibly work in the prison or to finish his college education, get cable TV maybe even HBO, and have his family visit him once in while. That's no suffering my friend that paradise especially when Lori's family won't ever get to see her have her child. There is a expressing for these type a cases "eye for an eye".

I'm not gonna argue the death penalty here, because that'll definitely get this thread locked, and I don't want that.

I think the guy should get the death penalty, except rather than the usual death penalites, the killer should be killed the way he killed his wife.

This case also made me think of Laci Peterson. It's so sad what happens to people in this world. :(
